Windows Live Messenger Finally Arrives For BlackBerry
Posted by Matt Hickey at 10:30 AM on July 23, 2008
Many companies use Windows Live Messenger for corporate IM because it's free and comes with pretty much any Windows computer they purchase. Windows Mobile users have had mobile IM love for awhile, but BlackBerry users have been left out, at least as far as official messengers go. They had already been promised an official client, and today Microsoft published it. Also included is live Hotmail support, for those who still use it. Go and download it, BlackBerry addicts, if you haven't already. [Download, via Ars]

Messenger and Orkut are very popular in Brazil and other parts of the world.

@oo0EveryoneElseWasDoingIt0oo: Many of the apple updates have been as goddamn boring as this. But Giz ALWAYS jazzes them up with longer articles, bigger pictures, etc.

This is perfect example of why Giz spends so much time boosting the iPhone. This is most anti-climatic tech news ever. How is this exciting at all?

I'll stick with my beejive (or jivetalk, whichever name you prefer). The multi-messenger application works great for me, especially since having both AIM and MSN in vital, and since the free AIM service gets cut every 1-3 minutes... yeah.
I'm just hoping everything will work fine when the Bold arrives.

I've never used Messenger and never plan on it. I don't even know anyone that's ever used it.

@OMG! Blink Tags!: That and the background push notification system. Then IMing will be really useful on the iPhone.

@itchytooth: The first email I sent was on Juno over a SLIP connection on a 14.4 modem in a 486 computer that I nicknamed "Tina" after stabbing it 44 times with a Phillips head screwdriver.
Those were the good ole days. When computers came in steel cases to protect them from angry users.

A) Who the hell still uses Messenger?
B) WebMessenger does this just fine and gives you the other chats as well.
Now if you don't mind, I'm going to stare at my iPhone and wait for Google Talk to come out for it.

@shamoononon has a hebetudinous dog: I'm really sad that I accidentally erased everything from my old Hotmail account a few years ago. The first email I ever wrote was in there :(

@shamoononon has a hebetudinous dog: Yeah, I still keep the old girl running. I mostly use it as a sign-up address to keep spam out of my other mailboxes, but I still check it now and then to be sure nothing pertinent came in.

This is actually old news to many subscribers, my carrier released it on july 7th or so, and many other US carriers released the service books earlier. It works great by the way, and i agree the iTouch should have an MSN client.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't that screenshot from a Nokia phone? The BlackBerry Client looks nothing like that, a lot more info on it in www.pinstack.com or www.crackberry.com

@Griffehpoo: HA HA!!! I thought I was the only one left. I love how i can go through my inbox still and find emails from when i was in high school. Hotmail forever!! Well, okay, so I have about 10 accounts still active spread all over the place, but I've kept my hotmails.

Or if you live in Canada and many parts of Asia, MSN is dominant over AIM, yes.

...You mean it's not cool for me to use my 12 year old Hotmail account anymore? D:

I want an iPhone version from the App Store.
And the article's picture is from Nokia's Series 60. On which Microsoft actually charge for MSN messenger. About 5 quid (~$10) a month for the last time I looked.

Again, in almost every country besides the US, MSN is the dominant IM client. So this news (though somewhat old; I've been running Windows Live Messenger on my Curve for quite a while now) is great for a lot of people.
Life DOES exist outside American you know.

MSN is a terrible network and client. It drops far too many messages, has the stupid add authorization garbage which doesn't even work right many times, and only allows you to be signed on in one place at once. It annoys me to no end that there's people that still use this at my job over AIM (which, even though it's AOL, got it right).

@thecharlie: Yes, there is life outside of America. We Americans just don't care about it. Then again, I refer to 75% of my own country as "flyover States".
Could be worse. I could be Californian and refer to where I live as "The Coast".

Who still uses Messenger and Hotmail? Are you kidding? These are both the global leaders in each of their categories. Are you really that ignorant of the market or is this just a "Oh its Microsoft?, well then I must hate it regardless of how well its made and how much people love and embrace it worldwide."

You young pups. My first email was on a service called "The Source" (later bought by Compuserve) back in the mid 70's. All text based, no GUI. There was no Micro$oft yet and Apple was selling their Apple //+.

Wait a minute... I've had my 8800 for months, and Windows Live Messenger came with it. This is "new?"

@vee-media:
I haven't gotten this function to work, i'll have to look into it more. This alone would make it a lot less frustrating to use, as I could keep my desktop and laptop logged in at all times and receive messages from clients and other teams. I can stay online in 3 places with AIM and pretty much get messages no matter what between those two and my iPhone, which seems like the absolute best solution.

My first instant messages were UNIVAC terminal to terminal messages. I think the command was @@MSG. . Those things preempted whatever you were typing and got mixed into your files if you weren't careful.

Windows Live Messenger came on my BlackBerry Curve, so what's new about this?
I can't say I've ever used it, as I don't know anyone on MSN.
