WiiSpeak Community Mic: Online Group Chatting Comes to the Wii
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 2:28 AM on July 16, 2008
The second new Wii accessory out of E3, the WiiSpeak community mic and speaker finally lets you chat with other people online. Unlike an Xbox 360 headset, it's more about group chatting and is placed on top of your TV, like a conference call mic (how does it filter out game sounds?). It's bundled with Animal Crossing City Folk, which is kind of like the Sims, but more Animal Crossing-like. It'll be out later this year.

i don't like talking people when i'm playing. been there done that with the original xbox live, i have no desire to talk to strangers while i play videogames ever again.
hopefully it doesn't increase the price of the game, or they will sell the game separately.

Yeah this is going to work real well with my home theater and subwoofer.

I guess, knowing what sounds are coming from the game, it can subtract those from the mic input?

@turniptable: I agree, but knowing Nintendo, it probably won't.

Wait a minute. This poses a lot of problems for people like myself....who enjoy using a bandsaw while playing mario party.

Hopefully this doesn't just work for Animal crossing, but with games like Smash Bros....

I think Nintendo is trying to bury us in peripherals. Seriously, how many games are they going to release that require yet another peripheral of some sort? I'd like to see a little more attention to getting some solid games in this console and expanding some of the online features rather than feeling like I have to buy yet another piece of plastic crap to use my Wii the way I'd like.

@weatherman: Are you jealous you didn't have the business plan?
I'll be getting this. Completes the perfect Tiger Woods '09 round of golf with my brother and father in a three state show down.

very cool. It will be interesting if any of the games will be voice activated. Can I answer questions to a game on Wii via voice commands? hmm..The potential is pretty amazing! Imagine if the Wii could integrate with Ribbit's voice platform ([developer.ribbit.com]) disclaimer I work for them).

I don't care what you guys say, Nintendo still doesn't seem that serious about online play. However, I don't really get their apprehension. I get the feeling Nintendo has had senioritis ever since the Wii started selling out, and now they just make marginal improvements to keep a stream of half-assed accessories coming out. I'm a Wii owner, and I have had a lot of fun with it, but the novelty wears out a bit too quickly...

In other news, Nintendo still won't let you use it until you've exchanged 20-character codes.
