Wii MotionPlus Demonstrated in 3D, Jedi Drone Training is GO
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:50 AM on July 31, 2008
AiLive, the company that collaborated with Nintendo on the MotionPlus controller add-on, has released a video demonstrating the full capabilities of the new hardware with a set of 3D tools called LiveMove2. An obvious but effective rendering of the controller shows that the touted 1:1 tracking is, in fact, 1:1 and that the response time is almost instant. They've also had some fun with the software, mapping a light saber to the WiiMote to fight off physics-enabled Seeker Drones (which caused our own Adrian Covert to "make a mess in his pants"). To top it all off, the "Snap-to-fit" technology can map incredibly complex motions to more specific commands, recognising everything from throwing a lasso to specific sword slashes.
LiveMove2 is a toolset for developers intended to simplify the process of including the WiiMote's new live tracking abilities in new titles. If these test samples are any indication, there are a great deal of possibilities here. We've already told you that the MotionPlus add-on is too expensive (though fantastic), but watching this guy swing a perfectly synchronised digital sword at a helpless ragdoll and ping drones across the room makes the exorbitant price tag hurt just a little less. What is too expensive? Nintendo has announced no price other than you being able to buy Wii Sports Resort for $50 which will include a MotionPlus. The original post linked didn't even mention the price with Wii Sports Resort. It only said that it's not making the Wii any cheaper.

@snakepliskin: Why didn't my PS3 come with rumble again?
Why didn't my (theoretically early-adopted) 360 come with a proper cooling system again?

@praevalesco: Not true, according to their earnings report that was posted here yesterday, unfortunately. If people would stop buying the minigame crap-fests that keep coming out, maybe developers would put some effort into their software and, y'know, improve it. Or create something new, instead of 50 different versions of Whack-a-Mole with different characters.

You'd think with their nearly flawless precision pointing instrument Nintendo wouldn't continue to miss the point. It's the damn games that they need to develop, not more hardware crap for us to buy.

As much as I don't like another accessory, this one really seems to add a lot, especially if into Star Wars, but even for other games where precision matters.
I doubt Wii Resort will be a compelling reason to get the add-on.

This will prevent people I play Wii Sports with from sitting on the couch and barely moving the wiimote when playing tennis or baseball. Now they will have to actually make a tennis racquet motion or swing a golf club because the wii will recognize it in 3d.

I would love to use this in games instead of rapidly just waving it around to actually hit something.

Uh... that didn't really look 1-1 at all when he used the lightsaber. I mean, the saber just stuck there at a point, while he was flinging his arm wildly.
I didn't get a Wii, but I assumed it already WAS 1-1. The fact that it wasn't, and that this "improvement" which everyone is drooling over STILL looks like it sucks... well, it makes me glad I didn't drop any money on it.
I couldn't be the only one to notice that.
Also, you can't have lightsaber duels, even if it was 1-1 perfect control. In real life a sword/saber would stop when hitting another sword/saber. In this, your arm will keep going, screwing up the positioning of your hand (which is moving) in relation to the sword on screen (which is stopped, against the opponent's blocking sword).
Meh.

F*cking lag.
Is there no such thing as a lag-free plasma/LCD and Wii combination?
I can only play Wii on my 32" CRT. It's the only lag-free option I know of.

@crapcakes: Only with an EDTV LCD/Plasma, which wouldn't have to upconvert 480p to anything would give you lag free Wii.
That is what causes the lag, if you have a 1080p HDTV, every input (except 1080p) is upconverted to 1080p. So you have to set the console to 1080p to have no lag.

I love my Wii and everything (it's a fantastic social gaming platform), and I love the potential this provides... but it is a bit sad it wasn't included originally.
Oh well, in my book, the Wii is still an extremely FUN gaming system, and the only one that I really enjoy getting together with friends and playing. Here's hoping the MotionPlus will just add to that.

i got a wii... it has like 10 good games and once u play through them there is no reason to play them again. the wii sucks... yes, y wasn't this there to begin with, stop making gay peripherals for people to waste money on nintendo and start making some good freakin games already!! nobody in my house plays the stupid thing. i rent games for my brothers xbox or just don't play anything at all... smash bro's only lasts for so long idiots (and the big "exciting" motion control isn't even used in the game...). nintendo is getting so gay already...

@Adam: "Also, you can't have lightsaber duels"
Ever hear of programming? I heard that's how they make games. Holy shit how does my gun stop shooting in Halo when i run out of bullets? holy shit, how do I have bullets? Whoa, this crazy world in my tv isn't tiny fairies doing what i tell them to do with my magic wand?

MY question. Why did No More Heroes get such a raving review when the game was obviously terrible. There were motion controls? PFT. Worst game I've purchased to date.
Perhaps with this new BS in line, the people who made that game can make a real one this time.

1st the Negative: My Wii should have had this since day 1.
Now the Positive: I have once again become excited about the Wii...I've disliked so many of the games because I never felt like I had very good control over...well, anything that didn't mostly use the nunchuk. Smash Bros. remains my favorite game to this day, only because of how much control I actually have over it. Even Super Mario Galaxy at times feels a bit wonky (although this is probably due to the fact that I'm upside down half the time).

I just bought the Nintendo Wii last week. Already have a 360 and trying to get my girl to get involved.... but I'm sick of it already. Why is it so hard to have a whole slew of good sports games for this thing? I was so excited to finally find the thing at a local store, and when I get it home and look up the best games, half of them don't even use the motion control. I'm thinking of returning it. COSTCO had a good deal though...2 controlers, 2 nunchuks, Mario Galaxy, Wii Play, and Wii Sports for $350.
Should I drop the dough on the Wii fit?

@Adam, didn't you hear the guy talk about the ability for the software to clean up people's not so perfect controller motions? That way everyone could be Link... As MilktruckHeist said, you can program the game to use movements in the real world to control in-game and make it rotate around one point or tone down the movements a bit.
As for the in-game sword stopping and your arm continuing to move, well you are right. But that is where you end up with sword add-ons for the WiiMote so you can actually beat your friends unconscious as well as in the game. Or you can just pretend and stop your arm on your own...
