Wii MotionPlus Brings More Accurate Motion-Sensing to the Wii
Posted by Adam Frucci at 1:59 AM on July 15, 2008
Nintendo just announced the Wii MotionPlus, a small peripheral that plugs on to the bottom of the Wiimote to give greatly improved motion sensing, allowing for games to truly use your motion on screen for, say, a lightsaber game.
Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo's commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing.
Now let's watch and see how Nintendo tries to spin a fix to underwhelming motion sensing as a new feature. Adventures in marketing, ahoy! [Nintendo]

@Dunny0: From the look of the pic I think I see what could be a little flap that would reveal the connector. Plus nintendo would have to be real REAL dumb to miss that.

Is there a hidden pass-through port for the nunchuck, or is this not compatible with it?

They should redesign the basic remotes to incorporate the new enhanced accuracy. I'd buy a new integrated remote, but I'm not interested in tacking bits on the the ones I have. Especially if it means new anti-slip skins.

@SimpleNate: Who says a $250 game system that barely has PS2 quality graphics is cheap? I think most everyone has been in agreement that Nintendo makes a very nice profit off of this system, which is a nice way of saying "the Wii costs a lot". But, given the continued popularity, they clearly are not charging "too much".

@SimpleNate: You don't have to buy all that. I have 3 Wii-motes, 2 Nunchuks, zero Classic Controllers (I use the GCN controllers that I already had for anything I might want to use the Classic Contoller on). As a sidenote, none of my remomtes have the wrist strap on and I don't own a jacket. Those things are so dumb.
As for this, which they may or may not charge for, I'm not sure, I think it's a good idea, but yeah, it probably should've been built in, but complaining about that isn't going to change anything. We can get better functionality now, and that's what's important. And if they do charge for it, it won't be expensive.

This will be fun to mess with, I assume this speaks i2c? The nunchuck worked as a great accelerometer for my projects but it will be great to have something more accurate

This is akin to the iPhone 3G: Giving the Wiimote basically what it SHOULD have had since day 1!
Be that as it may, I am GREATLY excited by this! There's been far too many games that I just didn't like, solely because the motion sensing felt off...and yea, that even included Metroid Prime 3!

@SimpleNate: Because heaven knows that the Wiimote isn't a fully-functioning controller by itself. No, not at all.

@I_Sell_TVs: Agreed. This maybe a solution for current users, but there's no reason this shouldn't be implemented by default.

If they charge for this....
Everybody bitches about the $60 DualShock 3, but you have a $40 Wii Remote, a $20 nunchuck, a $20 Classic Controller and now this? No wonder the Wii is so cheap! It would cost $100 to get a fully functioning controller.

I like this. I always did feel that the motion sensing on my Wii could be a little better. I'll use any excuse to avoid accepting that I suck. I wonder how much?
I think this should come free with a game as it should've been built into the Wii to begin with.

I can only think of a few games where this level of precision is necessary.
If this adds significant cost to the controller, then I'm glad they left it out. Otherwise, I hope they build it in to new Wiimotes.

I stand by the fact that there are plenty of games that require either a classic controller or a nunchuck attachment.

I'm always amazed at people who hate on the Wii.
I bought the Wii shortly after launch, picked up the extra wiimote and nunchuck (Mario Strikers!) and still regularly play with friends.
Perhaps that is the thing these guys aren't getting. This is a social device. It's for having friends over and enjoying the games that come with it.
I've spent $250, then another $60 for the second controller and nunchuck. That's $310 for countless hours of entertainment just on Wii Sports alone. I still play Golf and Tennis with my friends fairly regularly.
Then people compare to the $399 PS3? The Sony CEO was right, the Wii is a niche gaming device.
If by "niche" he means "Everybody who isn't a competitive gamer who just wants to have fun with friends playing silly games".
I'd much prefer have a console that lets me incrementally purchase equipment I need and want rather than having a base option of a $60 controller. Then again, I don't and won't own an Xbox 360 or a PS3.

I wonder how much this will change Tiger Woods golf. It def makes the controller bigger, so now you can properly hold it with 2 hands like a real golf club.

Can I?

Haha I am glad that i works with the jackets, I am a jacket user and hate unusing them to use an accessory

@SimpleNate: You've got me on the nunchuk (though there's just as many that don't), but I honestly can't think of a single title that requires the Classic Controller. Well, other than VC titles, but those will also play on the Gamecube controller.

While 1:1 is nice, wouldn't this be admitting that the conceptual video of the debut of the Wii-mote was a total lie? I know it was conceptual, but I feel gimped with current FPS Wii controls....
This would greatly improve:
FPS games
Swords slashing games
and maybe even driving games
I really liked the Red Steel game concept, it's just a shame that the actual game didn't get to realize it because of the lack of 1:1 controls.

Hey all,
Any actual release dates, prices, or specs on this? I mean, I don't really see where this would make a HUGE difference.... Although, if it does, I may be interested. I would like to know of an actual, cut-and-dry example of before and after with this so i can judge for myself...
Thanks

Finally! I was getting ready to give up on Tiger Woods games on Wii. I love it when on my backswing 1/2 way through my character takes the shot and hits the ball 10 ft.
