Wii is Now the Number One Console in the U.S.
Posted by John Mahoney at 12:30 AM on July 19, 2008
After outselling the Xbox 360 3:1 in June (660,000 vs 219,800), the Wii eeked ahead in the total U.S. sales race by 500,000 consoles, despite the 360's one-year head start. NPD is also reporting a 53% increase in game and hardware sales across the industry compared to this time last year. [Information Week]

Funny, I was playing Super Mario Galaxy last night with the GF (we trade the controls back and forth every other planet). Mucho fun. Still like the Wii. Wish I could get a WiiFit, tho.

I seem to remember a marketing scheme from the time when the PS3 and the Wii were launching where either sony and microsoft suggested that they could buy their superior console and a wii in addition because it was cheap, expecting next to no competition. Its probably more common than people think where they own either a ps3 and a wii or a 360 and a wii.
Unfortunately there also is no statistic of how many hardcore gamers were disappointed at their wii and haven't touched it since zelda or ssb *raises hand*

The title is misleading. The Wii is now the #1 console in the U.S.? In sales, but how about in actual 'actively-used' units in homes? Of course the XBOX360 sales will slow down.... Most folks that wanted one, already have one.... The Wii is FINALLY available for average people to purchase in stores now...so yeah, supply caught up, so I the title should read "...#1 console in Units Sold".

@Optimus-Prime: It wouldn't affect the sales figures, I just think it would be interesting to know. How many people are multi-system owners?

My Wii got boring when I left college. I do most of my gaming alone now and need a robust online interface to play with my friends. Not having a packed dorm room makes SSB a lot less fun. Sold my Wii and got a ps3, couldn't be any happier. UPnP FTW!

Don't get me wrong...I have a Wii and I can't believe that I am going to defend the red ring of death, but here it goes.
I am sure that victory doesn't really fall on console sales, but more with the sale of games AFTER buying the console. I am sure that there are lots of Wii owners that still haven't branched past Wii Sports. The real cash is in the aftermarket games.

The Wii is starting to get some pretty good games... obviously SSB and games Mario Galaxy are both excellent first party choices, but there's other games like Zach and Wiki and No More Heroes that are also great. Overall, I'm pretty happy with my purchase, but I wouldn't trade my 360 in for anything.

Well, I have a Wii and a 360. Overall, the 360 gets the most use. But, I have to say, I love Wii's virtual console. When I do use the Wii, the VC games get by far the most use. (Though I have been playing a lot of Smash Brothers recently.)
Overall, if I had to give up the Wii it wouldn't bother me too much. I'd actually miss the 360.

Wow...seems I'm still party of the majority after all...
I own both a 360 and Wii. Wii gets turned on for parties or if the girlfriend is over with a few friends...
360 gets played on a nearly daily basis. There's far too many games for it that I still want to play, but don't nearly have enough time. Whereas the Wii has had a few games, but I've already played them all...Zack & Wiki, Metroid Prime, SMG to name a few...
The other part (and I may still be in the minority here), is that of the 360 games I own, I'm constantly wanting to go back and play them again. Mass Effect and Bioshock have both seen multiple play-throughs.

@pharmboy: The title isn't misleading. The "Wii is now the number one console in the U.S." That's totally true. The article then goes on to say in sales. That's what articles are for, clarifying the details. Also, there's no way of accurately telling how many "actively-used" console are in homes.
Anyway. I went with the Wii for casual gaming and PC for my hardcore games. Works perfect and I still play both all the time. Xbox 360's and PS3's are great too, I just haven't needed to get one yet.

I have all three, and a top of the line gaming PC.
I have 5 games for the Wii, including the one that came with it and the one that came with a controller. I haven't turned it on in a few months.
I have 4 games for the PS3, which I haven't played in months, and 40 Blu-Ray movies. I watched all the Blu-Ray movies at least once, some twice now.
I have 24 games for the XBox360, plus about half a dozen Arcade games I payed for and about 20 XBox games (half of which I can't play on the 360). I play on the XBox 360 every week. I don't have the HD-DVD player on it because I have a Toshiba HD-DVD player for the 120 or so HD-DVDs I own (and all the standard DVDs since it's far and away the best standard DVD player I've ever owned).
I currently have about 20 games installed on my PC, and about twice that many sitting in a drawer that I will occasionally reinstall and play. I play on my PC every week, too.
I don't regret buying the PS3 simply because it's the only real Blu-Ray player out and I love my HD movies. I do regret wasting my money on the Wii. If the XBox360 had a Blu-Ray drive/attachment, I'd regret buying the PS3, too.

I have a Wii gathering dust. There are very few games worth playing, almost none worth buying. Some of the decent games are made worse by poor controls. Hell, even after I added a mod chip, I almost never turn it on. Over the years, I've had just about every US console made and the Wii has gotten the least amount of play by far.
Mini-game after mini-game after mini-game. LAME. My cell phone has better graphics... It's a $250 bowling simulator at best. At least the mod chip lets me use it for Divx, mp3s, etc.
When it comes to games that are fun to play, you can't beat the 360.

According to VGChartz, this actually happened back in May.
Also, if you consider that Microsoft considers a replacement for a failed console as a "shipped unit", and factor in their 20-25% failure rate, the Wii's actual installed base probably overtook the 360 quite a few months ago.

Like many others: I have both. I play the 360 almost every day, even if only for a quick 10 minutes XBL arcade match. The Wii literally sat in a drawer for months. I tried four or five games, but since I don't having "gaming parties" I found the Wii games to be shallow and boring. I got Wii Fit for the heck of it, and now I "play" Fit occasionally. It's not really fun, but at least if I do Fit for 30 minutes, I don't have to feel quite as bad about spending the next three hours eating chips and playing 360.
I paid $300 for my Xbox (got $100 rebate on Premium back when it was $400). Overall cost of Wii+balance board is $310. If you compare cost with hours played, my 360 owns my Wii. For me, the 360 has been a much better value (even if you deduct the time and aggravation of two RROD returns).

Wait...so the Wii sold 660,000 units, and the 360 sold just under 220,000 units, which means the Wii outsold the 360 by just over 440,000 units...and that just now puts the Wii up by 500,000 units? So what you're saying is that the Wii was actually #1 console in total sales _last_ month by a 60,000 unit margin?
@hxzero:
Welcome to the world of my long-ago predictions. Microsoft was pretty much saying the same thing from their side. They both saw it as a fight to see which of the "true" next-gen video game consoles was better and/or would win (turns out there's not much of a power difference, but the PS3 is harder to program due to horky self-limiting design), and both dismissed the Wii as some sort of cheap toy that would get picked up to accompany their more popular game system. Yeah, the math never added up properly on that one. Not when they were both adamantly claiming that you would buy their HD-capable game console _instead_ of the other one.

@Chromeo is typing this on his iPhone 3G: That's what I think would affect the perception of the Wii in the marketplace. Sure, it's fun but a lot of people bought it to supplement their gaming habits, not as the sole provider of video game entertainment. I play the 360 every week as well, and almost never see the Wii turned on. Even the kids would rather play the 360 (though I don't let them as much since I bought them the damn Wii.)

@Optimus-Prime: There are a lot of people with both systems. But how many play the wii compared to the 360??? I mean numbers matter but just because one console sells the most doesnt mean that its better or more people play it, it just means that its more popular. Now im sure the 360 users play the 360 waaaay more than they play their wii because of the xbox live and rpg's like halo 3 etc.
I think if the wii had more shooter games with more violence and bloodshed it'd be way better. How cool would it be to get a headshot while holding the gun like you would in real life compared to just pressing buttons???

I'm with the majority here, I rarely play my Wii except for parties or with my kid. Had nothing to do with "standing up" etc., most of the games just aren't that much fun for continuous play. The only games I own on the xbox that are brought out for parties etc. are guitar hero and scene it! For regular games though, the xbox still rules. Microsoft will always trail someone in the console world cause there are too many people that despise MS. Fools.

Got a Wii and a PS3, I get ot play Wii more often than PS3, this one only fires when feeling like i want to play MGS4 or MGO (didn't live up to the hype for me)
I mostly play smash online (seems like many people forgets this game has online caps. And don't get me the lag issue, I do have lag, but is not impossible to enjoy a battle) and Mario Kart Wii, man, i'm having the hell of fun out of it. also, wiiware games are pretty fun to play, and the homebrew scene is getting better as days passes on (quake on wii is just another thing!!!!!)
people saying that the controls scheme on the wii sucks, is people who truly sucks with em, with are not up to accept the facts that they suck hard
people saying that the wii-wheel is pretty lame... well, same thing as the paragraph before
people saying there are no games on Wii, I can mention 32 titles currently out that are amazing, and another 20 that are about the come out
Wii's outselling their rivals, M$ stated that the first to reach 10M selling on the US is the winner, then fixed for High Definition consoles, man, M$ is such a winnier, "Oh no, a less powerfull console is getting on my toes, which came out after a year than me and already reaching me, but I have better games, better internet service, and have been out for more time. I know, 'll steal some of the other console exclusives. Also, that console is selling because of his motion sensing control. If get one like that, 'll be selling more again. Mmmmm, those player representations that that lower powered console has is a great his, lets copy their idea, but lets pimp em out so they are different, just like we did with Vista and our Widgets. Lets name em Avatars. Se, they are different. Oh, better yet, 'll state that only HD gaming consoles to reach 10M sales on the US is the actual gen winner. Yeah, the other hd console can even get the half I had sold!!!!"
Man, this gen war is getting funnier as time goes on!!!! i want to see

The problem with this is that the WII isnt selling games for the 3rd party companies. This is a big deal. If there are systems that are sold but a majority are not buying games, then developers and publisher wont have the funding to keep making games. It's simple videogame econ 101. As I see it, the only people really making money are 1) Nintendo for the console
2) Nintendo for Wii Remotes
3) Nintendo for Mario Kart
4) Nintendo for WiiFit
5) Some Chinese guys selling WiiFit Accessories
If I was a little guy developer what are the chances of my new game even standing a chance against the wii fit. I'm still looking for a wiiFit here in San Jose, and thats all the time i'll devote to finding a game for the wii.

We own an xbox and a wii. Even if a game isnt played that day the chances are the xbox gets used as a media centre extender to listen to any music track stored on the computer in the other room or to watch recorded TV. This has changed viewing habits from watching any old rubbish to watching things I want to watch or just listening to a track you havnt played for ages.
I wanted to have another extender in another room but didnt feel the need for another gaming machine. Having looked around there is not a decent extender cheaper than an Xbox arcade so why not get a free games machine + DVD player thrown in for free.
Xbox is a great all round package if you use it to its full potential. All they need to do is make a blu Ray add on and internet access and they have one machine under the TV that can do it all

There also isn't merit to the un played wii gaining dust. All systems have people play them and then put them down for a while.
It just the same as MS doesn't see how many of the 360s are gaining dust or have multiple units in the same house. It doesn't seem to be uncommon for xbox owners to use multiple units as media extenders. Some have purchased new units to get larger hard drives and some have bought temp units to play games while a different unit is out for repair.
The same can be said for game sales. Most people I know with wii's buy a game and that is it. They buy it new and keep it. The PS3 and Xbox players buy and sell used games. Publishers don't see any money from those used sales. Used games sales are why XBOX and PS3 publishers only have 2weeks to make all of their money after a games release. Wii publishers might not be doing very poorly at all if you couple that with much lower game production costs.

It really really simple.
I went to a game store with my fiancee who is a long time gamer. She looked at the wall for xbox, xbox 360 and the PS3 and pointed out the all of the boxes look the same. They are all violent looking characters.
More than that they are all realistic looking without artistic style falling straight into the uncanny valley.
Compare this to the PS2, DS and wii and I can see why the xbox360 and PS3 are both failures. The games are all stylistically limited, graphically advanced and of similar genre.

@Mayor McRib: It's actually different with the Wii...int he past you would have been absolutely correct. Normally, the company looses money on the sale of the console and recoups the cost with games, add-ons, and licensing. The 360 and PS3 follow that model. The Wii actually earns money for Nintendo with each sale, and even more so since manufacturing costs come down yet they haven't lowered the price once yet.
As for after-market games, Zelda + Mario Galaxy + SSBB + WiiFit are all games made by Nintendo and rake in a massive amount of money. I have a 360 and a Wii, and I have about the same number of games for both of them. Some of the 360 games far bet the Wii games, but I'm an RPG player, so there's little to choose from on the 360. If only it became more popular in Japan so they could get some of the major RPG makers onboard.

@bigmark64: Wonder if that has to do with the fact that most of the third party Wii games suck.
Seriously, the only companies that have brought out anything worthwhile on the Wii are Nintendo (obvious), Ubisoft (No More Heroes, Rayman Raving Rabbids), Activision (GH3), and Capcom (RE4). Notice that all of the above sold. People would ignore the obvious "If you make crap, it won't sell", but instead go for "people only buy Nintendo games on Nintendo systems", which is bottom-line false (but it absolves them of responsibility from shoveling crap out the door, so expect to see it repeated often).

@Mayor McRib: The 360 does have the highest software attach rate by far. Followed by the Wii and then the PS3.

I recommended the 360 to another family with younger kids, because of how much I enjoyed the system. Turns out they weren't quite the gamers I thought they would be because their enjoyment of the system fizzled quickly. I should have pointed them towards the Wii which appeals to a much bigger market. I only play the Wii when I want to break a sweat though.

As someone who owns all three current gen consoles, my 360 is number one for games, my PS3 is number one for BluRay/DVD playback, and my Wii is number one at collecting dust and being ignored.

@Puck:
Incomplete thought; I originally intended to add yet another sarcastic comment, but felt it was unnecessary. I'm in med school @ OSU, so in no way am I trying to be this 'Shakespeare' person you speak of. Furthermore, I would be tremendously appreciative if you could enlighten us as to which community college you attended so that I too can insult your alma mater. It's only fair...

@D-13: Man you are one angry dude, I agree buy what you like, but no one is cramming "wii this and wii that down [your] throat" you are in control of the mouse, if you don't want to read about the wii then don't click on articles that have to do with the wii, it's the same mentality of all of those who needed the link to the apple free giz.

@DozeUser: you think D-13 is an angry dude but you dont call out BostonCockParty for being a blatant troll? The guy comes into a Nintendo Wii post and starts crying about how he cant buy a PS3 with his food stamps. I mean please.

@imTheKing: I can kinda agree with you there, although i wouldn't use the word troll for either, while boston is angry, and yes he is but not to the extent that D-13 is, I have never once seen him say that he was saddened because he couldn`t buy a PS3 with his foodstamps as you put it. I believe the closest to that he came is saying that nothing is free. Also if Boston is a troll then D-13 definitely is, i mean his first post was
``PS3 all the way screw nintendo and there kiddy like games mario has been lame since 99 yall``
Does that not count as troll behaviour, also if you think someone is a troll take it up with them i merely commented on D-13 because he is in fact an angry dude, honestly you got a problem with Boston take it up with him, not me you arrogant bastard.

My girlfriend has a wii. Its fun, for social things. If you just want to play a good game... get a 360. If you want to spend alot of cash and talk about specs...get a ps3.
It truly comes down to games. No matter what features of specs a machine has, in the end the one with the best games wins.
sorry for double post

I guess I am different from the other users here. I own both an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii, but my Xbox 360 is the console that is gathering dust. I play my Wii everyday (Smash Brawl mostly). The Xbox 360 has not been on since I lost interest with Halo 3.
I guess I may be a casual user after all. After seeing the video for Gears of War 2, I simply went "Meh." It was pretty, but it didn't really generate any excitement. On the other hand, I am excited for Geometry Wars 2 and Galaga Legions. Maybe those games will make me pick up that Xbox 360 controller again.

@D-13: Sarcasm, congratulations, did I hurt your feelings. Stop acting like an angry jackass and i will not call you out on it. I never said a word in any post about this sensitivity you have imagined in me the only time I said anything close was when i said that no one was cramming the wii down your throat, and that is true no one is. You however are trying continually to cram your opinions down our throats.
