Wii Homebrew Can Now Read Burned DVDs, Play PSP Games?
Posted by John Mahoney at 8:30 AM on July 19, 2008
Couple of news tidbits from the shadowy Wii homebrew scene today. First is what is supposedly the first custom Wii firmware that its author, Waninkoko, claims will allow the Wii to read burned DVDs without any hardware modification. And from the "just for the hell of it" department is a separate announcement of a PSP emulator running successfully on the Wii--albeit at a blazingly unplayable four to eight frames per second. The PSP emulator smells a bit more of fish than the DVD-R enabling firmware, but neither have been tested officially. [Waninkoko, DCEmu via Slashdot]

Looks like it was done in two pieces the "N0PSP" and the "7 fps" are squared off and you can tell the difference between the the real background and their overlay.

If you take the pic and zoom in on the N0$PSP you can tell that it was Photoshopped on there. There is a lot of pixel distortion there.

homebrew is wicked bad azz, but playing movies and media in that respect prematurely kills your dvd lens...If you're gonna drive by flame me for making this statement, do a bit of research before you do

@spimoles: There is one. And it's AWESOME.
ScummVM is the shit -- it turns out that the Wiimote is the perfect way to play all those old LucasArts adventure games.

idk about this one.... my mom always told me not to flash my wii...
seriously though this looks really cool. wasn't aware that there was even a wii homebrew scene. Most of the people I know who own one are still just playing wii sports

I'd be wary of flashing my Wii's firmware -- that's something that's quite likely to come back and bite somebody in the ass.
Though I sooooooooo want to, just to say I did... :)

Come on now, we all know PSP has a much more powerful processor than the Wii...

If true and if they can get PSP to 30 fps then I'd buy a second Wii in a heart beat.

Is homebrewing for the Wii just one of those "becuase you can" sort of things?

@Mr.SithNinja: It's a 480 x 272 game outputed at 640 x 480 on a 1920 x 1080 screen. There will obviously be some distortion.

@rgshredder: (Read this comment as a serious question, not a flame or attack) Why would using the drive to read discs make it burn out? Isn't that what it is designed for?

So people bitch about the PSP because they dont want to play the regular games on it and just want to play homebrew, then they hack the Wii to play the PSP games that they did not want to play on the PSP. I totally understand.

@aR-Tard: Come on now, we all know the Wii has at least 4 times more good games than the PSP (for that matter, it has more good games than any other system, save for the PC). Processing power has nothing to do with the quality of a game.
@Mr.SithNinja: You must have a lot of free time to dissect pictures to see if they're photoshopped. Or you just go ahead and assume things are fake. You remind me of xkcd comic #331.

@MichaelFanuimor: It's even funnier when somebody reads words where they have not been used.
CTRL-F + "literally" = only your post (and now this one, I guess).

@somebody-else: You seem to have as much free time as i do if you have time to comment on someone else's comment... It's not like it was an involving process. The pic didn't look right so, Right-click save, open with MS Pic Viewer, click zoom icon..... Took longer to type this than do that...
