Why You Should Carry a Camcorder at All Times-Plus Infrared Goggles, Survival Kits, GPS, and Canned Burgers
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 9:32 PM on July 23, 2008
Adam already pointed out the need to carry a camera with you at all times to catch amazing pictures. Now, here's one reason to always remember to carry a good videocamera. And survival kits and a GPS and armoured suits and canned burgers and infrared goggles or a F-35 helmet. Unlike Lori Mehmen, however, these guys didn't take cover and just kept driving to this huge mother of all dust storms in Australia. Not as dangerous as a tornado, sure, but scary doesn't even start to describe it. [LiveLeak]

Man: "We'll have to turn around"
Woman: "Why's that?"
Mmmm not sure, maybe because of the massive dust storm infront of you?! You might take on a road train with your face? The possibilities are endless!

@hu_hu_cool: Air-filter -cloggish, could still be used temporarily (after being tapped "clear") would need to be replaced soon probably (depending on how long the vehicle was operated *in* the dust storm.
Paint - In a *dust* storm it would probably be fine, after washing it might need a quick polish and a fresh coat of wax. In a *sand* storm, could be pretty badly damaged. This was a dust storm not a sand storm.
@-Core-: Makes perfect sense to me...

Ahh.... THIS must be why Oklahoma has signs stating "Do not drive into smoke".
I always wondered who would need such a sign.

Oh yes, oh yes, I love the big dust storms we get in Arizona. A few hundred meters high, miles long, just rolling across the state.
I was living in Casa Grande at one point (in between Tucson and Phoenix for those who don't know the Arizona boonies) and we saw a storm coming from our house. We didn't have time to do anything - so all the lawn furniture ended up against the fence or in the pool, which had probably half an inch of dirt in the bottom after all was said and done.
Really reminds you that we don't control the planet as much as we'd like to think.
And hell yes they're scary, and not in a good way like our monsoons. Mostly because you can usually breathe, and see, in monsoon storms. Not so much in the dust storms.

@hu_hu_cool: Which means nothing when you're driving a Jeep/Range Rover/Land Rover. Anyone deserving of those SUV's knows they'll be getting dirty and probably pretty beat.

Damn, I love the accent of Aussie women . . .
In all seriousness, I've seen that here in AZ as well, and these people are crazy to keep driving through that, especially keeping their speed up. Whenever we get dust storms here, depending on the visibility you slow down or even pull of the side and wait for it to pass. You get a lot of accidents on the freeways when one of these blows through from people who just keep on driving through it and can't see what's 10 feet in front of them.

I drove through something like this when I was in Arizona. It was a lot earlier in the morning so it wasn't as bright out, but in the cloud it was extremely dark and you could see little formations if you stared hard enough. Quite creepy indeed.

Would the car not be completely fecked for driving through a dust storm. The filter would be complete choked with sand and the paint job would be ruined.

If you live where folks drive on the right side of the road you can run that in reverse and pretend they're shooting out the back window while escaping the storm.
If...if you want.
Looks like all they might really need is a new air filter for the car.
The closest thing I've experienced to that was in upstate New York near Buffalo where I drove in and out of huge banks of lake-effect snow storms.
Absolutely clean on either side, but near zero visibility within.

@DashTheHand: I was amazed at how i had to strain my eyes to see more light and then i thought that their head lights couldn't be seen but instead the light from outside was gone that fast.
@RG_Shrike: That was hilarious. They're crazy though man. I would like to see what would happen if they shot one round into the dust storm. How cool that'd be to see the dust just open up and then follow the bullet. The bullet would probably stop a couple yards early though because of the density of that dust storm.
@DisposableInterloper: In all seriousness i thought mann thats beautiful and i thought those lunatics were going to turn around right before going in.
