We're Not Reading This Article on the Batpod, But Maybe You Should
Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:40 AM on July 18, 2008
We're doing our best to shield ourselves from whatever surprises are left in The Dark Knight before we stay up too late to see it, but that doesn't mean you should miss out on this story from Popular Mechanics on the new Batpod. We only skimmed the intro, but it looks to have interesting real-life background on the design and construction of Batman's fictional new ride. That's right. Batman isn't real. Because if he were, Santa Claus would have long since been busted for B&E, and that thieving bitch Tooth Fairy would be missing a few teeth of her own. [Pop Mech]

Hope I'm not the only rube at the 2pm showing this weekend! But what with my karma points down for skipping out on the Coney Island meetup, I can't blame anyone but myself.

Tires are too squarish and wide to be really stable - that's the problem. Looks cool as shit, though!

Most of the chase scenes were filmed on the street right by my apartment. One day, on the way to Walgreens, I saw the bat pod and a stack of about 20 of those huge fat tires. I can't want to see this movie!

Nice article, but I actually wish it had MORE details about the Bad Pod. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait until after the movie is released for the follow-up technical articles.

@Istoleinsteinsocks: Would it be cheating if I ripped the front wheels off of my Tumbler model to provide the tires?

I actually saw this on Tuesday, but with over a half hour left, there was a power outage from a big storm there, and the power went out!!! and they would have had to restart the whole thing cuz it was IMAX but it was too late by then.
I got my ticket for tonight's viewing to finish it.
Cant wait to see it again! Its amazing.

I understand them going for a look with the 20" wide M/T or Hoosiers or whatever. I think they could have achieved about the same look and built a rideable motorcycle by going to a 360 motorcycle tire all the way around. Even a 300 out front would look massive.

Love the idea of the movie, but, to a biker, the batpod is the badrod. Truck=Yuck.

So that's how that truck flipped all the way over... Wow, they used the Tumbler's tires for it? Now I'm pissed, since that most definitely means a certain something. Just hope they bring it back for #3.
Wish I could see it tonight, but the fact people were waiting when I went to see Wanted finally at around 3 or 4, that tells you something.

@Istoleinsteinsocks:
I've got a good spherical wheel designed, and figured out how to mount the front tire from only one side without having the opposing gun rotate with the tire, but making a frame that doesn't look too chunky in minifig-scale is tricky. I did put my current version out in our last MichLUG display, though. Maybe after watching the movie once or twice this weekend I'll get some new inspiration. Anyways, the really weird thing that I realized a while back is this is my fourth minifg-scale Batcycle, and it's the only one with two wheels (the previous three had one, four, and three respectively).
What I'm really hoping is that LEGO will get in gear and release a UCS Tumbler and a UCS Batpod.

@Purple Dave:
Yay, inspiration! After coming home from the movie and going to bed, I thought up an idea for how to slim up the frame. It didn't pan out, but then I looked at some hovercycles I had sitting on my desk, and remembered flex-tube. I now have a much better frame to go with the wheels and guns. I'd still like a better design for the front one-armed fork, but that's not really possible without also coming up with a new design for the guns.
