Walt Mossberg Joins Fox Business, Shows Off His iPhone 3G
Posted by Adam Frucci at 2:18 AM on July 10, 2008
WSJ tech guru and new Fox Business channel talking head Walt Mossberg was on TV this morning talking about the new iPhone 3G, waving it around just to reiterate that he has one and all of us do not. He doesn't give us any new info on the device, but you do get to see the nerd king of gadget mountain holding your precious iPhone 3G two days before anyone else, so who are you to complain? Interesting positioning, thanks to Rupert Murdoch's recent acquisition of the Wall Street Journal. Look for Walt to show up on Fox Business on Thursday mornings starting on the 17th. [Ed note: Does Mossberg really need Fox news?]

Curious about SlingPlayer on the iPhone and previous talk of download caps. Is it going to eat up GBs over a month if used every day?

who exactly is this mossberg guy? is he really technically that good, like say, Linus Torvalds or Apple's Woz or someone? The few gadget reviews I've read of his seem nothing special or incisive. Any kid could write those reviews. In fact, I recently read an article he'd written where he whines about the broadband speeds in the US. Apart from the fact that the article was quite shallow, he didn't seem to know what he was talking about. Is it just me or is there anybody else here who thinks he's PR-ed his way to the top?

Indeed. I forgot how the WSJ is now owned by Rubert Murdoch. Ugh. If it wasn't for the Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad ... I would never watch Fox.

Mossberg was a pretty accomplished reporter at the Journal for 20 years as a DC and European reporter. Then in the early 90s he started doing tech reviews. Because he's in the Journal he has high-powered readers and he's become a big name, big influence reviewer for non-gizmodo types. So it wasn't PR-- it was using his reporter cred to establish a new niche.
The Fox thing as (as pointed out above) a corporate synergy deal between the WSJ and its new owner.

@gmaxwell447: The amount of people bashing Fox News is incredible considering perhaps 90% of them have never watched more than 5 minutes of it. Most of their programming (not all) has nothing to do with opinions or editorials, a lot of it is straight up boring.ass.news, I've seen it with my own eyes.
And also, this is Fox Business, a separate channel from Fox News entirely. Just like local Fox affiliates have nothing to do with Fox News, neither does this, they operate independently according to Sean Hannity. And as for them not having multiple view points, they invite liberals on their shows all the time. Colmes is always with Hannity arguing the other side of every story they speak of so please TFSU.
If you want to hear all liberal views all the time tune into CNN or MSNBC or some garbage and enjoy, pick up a NYT, ok? Don't complain that there happens to be a network which opposes most if not all of your opinions and makes tons of money succeeding while doing so.

IMHO, Moss loses all cred just by wearing the suit and tie.
FoxNews would be more tolerable if they actually presented, uh, news. But some prefer bouncing boobs and wingnuts, so that's ok.

Why would Fox promote a product thats profit will go Steve Jobs? He has donated hundreds of thousands to democratic election campaigns over the years (and only 1,000 to Republicans).
Also, funny how Karl Rove uses an iPhone despite his money being directly inserted into the liberal pockets of Jobs. I'll bet he's watching Fox News videos about how sweet he is. Either that or Walt Mossberg talk about the iPhone 3G and the new app store.
I'm sure Rove wouldn't mind seeing a free "big brother" app that would allow the government to not only listen to your calls without a warrant, but also track precisely where you are with the new GPS capability (getting two birds stoned at once). Everyone would download it, especially since the government invading innocent people's privacy is the best way to prevent terrorism. This would also eliminate the middle man (ATT), making the whole process a little more efficient.

@justinpe: "Why would Fox promote a product thats profit will go Steve Jobs?"
They report the news. Odd concept for those who spoon feed themselves from CNN, MSNBC, Mother Jones, etc.
@justinpe: "He has donated hundreds of thousands to democratic election campaigns over the years (and only 1,000 to Republicans)."
And yet, you're saying FOX is biased. Apparently not.
"the government invading innocent people's privacy is the best way to prevent terrorism."
No it's not, that's why they're not doing it.
@Captain Bringdown: "break me off a piece off that insane right-wing ass anyday."
Besides being correct, how is she insane? I know it's difficult for you and your ilk, but try to be specific. And try not to be verbally abusive to beautiful, intelligent Asian American Women with an IQ you can only dream of. (It's in triple digits!!!)
@sisedi: "Don't complain that there happens to be a network which opposes most if not all of your opinions and makes tons of money succeeding while doing so."
They report the news. They make tons of money by keeping their opinions to the opinion shows (like O'Reilly, the sleazy loud mouth), not in the news.
@Half off all shafts!: "I'm not familiar with Fox Business Channel. Is it as big a joke as Fox News?"
Yes. Should you ever become interested in the truth (which seems unlikely) it's a place you can go.
@Rick36: "I'll bet you are a right ring, commie, pinko, facist, hippie, Starbucks-drinking sympathyser and fellow traveler."
You mean LEFT wing... Hitler/Stalin=LEFT Reagan=RIGHT
@chrisburp: "I thought this was a technology website--- was it always political?"
If by political, you mean wildly left, then yes.
@Nastro: "I smell a Liberal."
You smell a LOT of liberals. A LOT.
