Voyeur Security Drone is For Spying At Sea, Not at Your Neighbours
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:09 PM on July 1, 2008
This helicopter mini-drone has been developed by the Navy to help it counter water-borne threats, despite its provocatively lurid name. Made by Lite Machines, the battery-powered Voyeur weighs just 1.8kg, stands 70cm high and is actually designed to be suicidal. It's meant to hop out of sonobuoy tubes, patrol for threats for a while and then sink itself. Much more economical than helicopters or jets wasting fuel by attempting to ID surface targets (has the Navy's gas bill gone up at the moment too?) Plus it looks waaay more creepily sci-fi. @taciturnforsale:
Heh not really because the DOD specifically falls under their own regulations when it comes to pollution thanks to 40 CFR. They are supposed to report their discharges into the water to the NRC (National Response Center). In the end though they are still responsible for cleanup. Oddly individual states can slap the Navy with fines for pollution.
Of course this is a moot point if they are more than 12 miles out, where you can pretty much dump anything but plastic, and the rule of thumb is if it sinks its ok.

so every time they sink one can the coast guard slap a littering fine on them? Dumb question I know.

So Russia has the flying penis [gizmodo.com] , and now we're launching the flying "personal massage unit"?

No, No, No, No.
worst possible idea to make it a single axis chopper. This stuff works only indoors. we tried to make a single axis bot a couple of years ago. that thing had major stability issues. and at sea?? where the wind speeds can be so nasty?
sorry but i don't see this having a good career in espionage.

This thing looks and flies the same as the recon drone from the robot in the movie Red Planet.
I'm amazed it took so long for someone to make this real...

OK gentlemen. Today's actionable intelligence has been vetted and we have a few new recon targets. Sectors 'D', 'E' and 'F' were covered previously. Our new viewing spot is right here... can somebody make sure we've got the 'G' spot covered today, m'kay?

Didn't they test one of these in Russia during a press conference or something?

@Qsmits: I thought that too. I just saw it on the telervizions (I know, who watches TV anymore?!?) the other day.
And stability? A four-pound-anything at sea is screwed. Huh, that must've been their design influence...

Did they realize they were creating a giant flying dildo? Seriously, no one looked at the design and said, "That looks just like my wife's..."

I help build these. The company is located in the Purdue Research Park. We've actually had surprising success with outdoor flight. Though the best part was when the President of the company was featured in the local paper holding one (which yes, looks like a giant dildo) with the caption "The Voyeur" underneath.

Once we have this power source problem solved, we're screwed. These kinds of things will be so common that if you dont' see one while on your way to work you'll think something is wrong.

I'd really like to see you attempt to spy on your neighbors with this thing.. Makes way too much noise.
Get back to me when it's silent and I can peek on what my cute neighbor is doing behind her 'privacy' fence. ;)

@Tohe: I was wondering the same thing, though I doubt the Navy cares about being green. Still, you'd think they could make this thing weigh less and stick some solar panels on it. Imagine a drone that could hover forever just looking for enemy threats...
