Voodoo Envy 133 Configuration Site Goes Live, Full Pricing Revealed
Posted by Adrian Covert at 9:21 AM on July 8, 2008
The configuration page for the Voodoo Envy went live today, showing the full pricing scheme for the 133 PC, which starts at US$2100 and goes as high as US$4000. The low end model features a 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duo processor and an 80 GB, 4200 RPM HDD. The high end model has a 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, Windows Vista Business Edition and a 64 GB SSD, bringing the total to US$3400. Another US$600 dollars can be spent on a variety custom finishes other than the standard black -- white costing US$500 and "flat black" US$600.
This is expensive even by MacBook standards, whose US$200 cost to upgrade to black at least includes a bigger HDD. To top off the already complicated configuartion/pricing scheme, once you get your specs picked out, you have to request a quote from an Voodoo customer service rep. I get the feeling owning a Voodoo Envy is supposed to be a privilege in their eyes. [Voodoo]

Hey, doesn't this look a lot like that Intel prototype?

Its really not out of line given the size. I wish it was lighter though, given its CF. Its as heavy as my 12" dell and only slightly more powerful.
The only thing it has is that its a quarter inch thinner.

@mnit: They can only fit a single platter 1.8" drive in there, like the MBA. That is why 80GB is the largest size drive for those machines. It's the same as the one iPod Classic, the 160GB 1.8" drive is too thick for these svelte enclosures.

@ripfire: I doubt they can fit full sized drives in if they're going for a 4200rpm one. Same as the MacBook Air.

Damn, why solid state drives? Where's the 7200RPM drives?

You have to buy the MS Office to get the faster CPU.

For as much shit as they talked about the MacBook Air, the specs sure as hell look familiar.

@mnit: You didn't really say. You said 'doubt', that is not a affirmative answer. You also didn't inform as to the diameter of the drive or the number of platters. Those specifics were not stated.

$600 for flat black?
1 sheet of 1200 wet and dry sand paper $0.25
5 minutes scuff time $0.00
1 can of flat clear $8.00 (maybe)
i will flat black the exterior of anyone's plastic machine for $400.00, and i will pay for shipping and insurance both ways
like taking candy from a baby

@mnit: 4200 isn't really that bad... I have a PowerBook G4 12", 80GB, and it isn't that slow at all. I mean, PhotoShop takes a while to load, but that just gives me more time to scratch myself in strategic locations and take a sip of water.

That pricing scheme doesn't make sense. I have a few problems with that thing:
1) a MacBook 2.4 with the 250GB HDD is only 1,499$
2) from what I can tell, Voodoo are making you buy Windows, so you can't just get a blank one and stick Ubuntu on there.
The only thing they got right was ditching the VGA port and going with something digital, but a DVI port would have been better.

I'd buy the same design, but thicker, with better specs, and a little cheaper.

Macbook Air: $1550 for refurb
Colorware custom paint on all surfaces, not just the outside shell: $710 maximum
I mean, if you're going to be burning money on flashy gadgets, might as well get the most flash for the buck.
YOu can get a swank case with the $400 left over.

They should've just plated it with platinum and added some diamonds. That way, there wouldn't be any question as to who the target audience is. Skanktop, Hilton edition.

I read, "white costing $500 and "flat black" $600" and thought, "wow cheap - competing with Eee PCs?". Then I read the rest of the article and thought, "nope".
