Volkswagen Shows Us Cars From the Future
Posted by Mark Wilson at 5:20 AM on July 10, 2008
Volkswagen thinks they know what cars from 2028 will looks like (which is probably fair, since they can basically make the whole thing one big self-fulfilling prophecy). Still, it's exciting to see the designs. The one pictured here is Ego. It's a sporty two-seater without a front window (no, not because people in the future can see with their minds, but because it will be loaded with all sorts of cameras and sensors that are better than a window).
If you hop over to their site, you'll see how the display works to combine information from cameras, lasers, ultrasound and radar to warn you of upcoming problems on the road. The HUD is really not so dissimilar from modern day racing games.
Other touted features include intelligent navigation that borders on autopilot, but that's only if you're clever enough to get into a car with no door handles. For the full experience of 20 years in the future, head on over to the VW link (or, for the extremely patient, just wait 20 years). [VW via Yanko]

call me crazy, but there is no way i'm getting into a vehicle i can't see out of. you can have as many cameras and screens as you want, but how else am i going to challenge the guy next to me at a stoplight to race, flip off the old asian lady as i pass her, or throw garbage onto the highway?
that, and the whole safety/what if it breaks thing. no climbing out the windows if you get into a wreck (on the other hand, no flying out the windows if you're not wearing a seatbelt.)

I guess they're planning on whatever socialist puke we elect this year to start euthanizing the obese and tall among us, so we can all fit into these little windowless shitboxes. I mean, why not? Once the government takes over health insurance, the obese and tall are nothing but a drag on their cost of providing 'care' anyway. Plus, it has the added benefit of 'saving the planet'.

Cars in the future will look exactly the same, except slightly sleeker. That's the way the future freakin' works. Don't believe me? Take a look at past predictions. Are we flying in our cars? Are they weird little self-driving bubbles? Do they fold up into suitcases? No. They are, however, slightly sleeker* every year.
*Especially given that the definition of "sleek" changes along with auto designs.

I don't think cameras and sensors are better than a window. The design is pretty cool though.

I'll be okay with it so long as it is "totally" windowless, as in no Microsoft Windows either. That old joke about Microsoft making cars is getting just a little too close here. Can you imagine a blue screen at 80 mph on the freeway?

Also, nude driving up 25000%.

So ,it's got sensors, and no "viewing portals" but they're going to allow HUMANS to actually control these things? I guess it could be alright though, there aren't any windows in a submarine. However, SUMBArines do take more than one person to operate.

Concept cars more than five years out are free rein for designers to go totally batshit crazy. Like lol no windows? Really?
If there's anything I learned about concept cars growing up, it's that you can bet your bottom dollar they will never come out. All the cars I drooled over in grade school that were coming out aroung y2k? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. It's 2008 and you still don't see anything like them. The Honda CR-Z concept everyone is drooling over? When it comes out, it'll be a Civic with a different grill.

I don't know where to start...i mean, the wheels look like they have volkswagen trophies in the middle.
Not only are there no windows NOR a windshield....I can only *assume* you can see out but not in?
But as far as I know tints beyond a certain level are illegal, and not being to see in at all would be totally illegal. Yet I do see the possibility of doing more errrr "entertaining" things if people cant see in!
Also, how are they gonna enforce those hands-free laws!?!?

@drewls: Ahh, but tall people are usually higher paid and have more presitge. All Presidents of US (with the exception of FDR) have been pretty dern tall. I don't think they'll stop caring for tall people. But people who are wider than tall -- they're fu@ked. Anyone want some McDonalds? I'm making a run. er a walk. er a ride. Oh yeah, this idea will totally fly with local law enforcement. Imagine being a cop and having to pull this guy over, how the hell are they supposed to use racial profiling if they can't see who's driving?
Cool idea, but I don't think we'll be seeing any civilians driving around in these things.

No this makes me shake my head. For one, the world will not be that open and green nor will the sky be that clear. It'll probably more closely resemble Beijing circa 5 years ago. Other than that I can believe it, except it needs more of a Gotham, dark crime infested feel.

this wont happen. I remember watching a report about 10ish years ago about new designs for airplanes that would be instrument based and would have no windows for the pilots to see out of
10 years later... they still have wind shields
what happens if there was a malfunction or the camera was slow? there are too many issues out there for this to become a real thing
now a transparent monitor (e-ink or what have you) thats another story all together.

No Windows? At last! But wait... will it be running a Linux, or a Mac OSX? Seriously... if that thing will be a complete "fly-by-wire," hackers and modders can seriously be a concern on the streets! Ah... the guys at VW will figure it out. I still remember the (then) new Beetle design being shown in a scene in the movie Back to the Future. Some years later, my neighbor got one for himself. I'll try to beat my neighbor to the Ego design this time... soonest I can afford it. I'll just copy the image above for now.
