Vizio's VP505XVT 50-Inch 1080p Plasma TV Will Cost US$1,600, Use Panasonic Panel
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 11:05 PM on July 23, 2008
Part of Vizio's new XVT premium line, the 50-inch VP505XVT plasma known in a past life as the VP504F, actually uses Panasonic panels, meaning it'll have something in common with future versions of Pioneer's top-of-the-line Kuro sets. Yes, the plasma universe is collapsing upon itself as we speak, though for not that might not be a bad thing. And yeah, the 1080p set has Silicon Optix's HQV Reon processor. Here's what all you're getting for US$1599 when this finally hits in mid-September:

@chucklebuck: Best bang for the buck? I don't know, whenever I watch a Vizio and compare it to my Sony or my cousins Samsung, I'd rather get a smaller Sony or Samsung for the same price than a larger Vizio. Quality not quantity.

I do love my Vizio TV. Best bang for the HDTV buck as far as I'm concerned.

Hmm.. Interesting... Still wish I had the money for an HDTV.

Hmm somehow I doubt it will have in Pioneer technology for a very long time. I'm pretty sure Panasonic make several grades of panels and I doubt Vizio is buying anything but the economy ones.

Wow, very tempting! I'm still using my "extended definition" 42" plasma that seemed like a bargain when I got it for $3K about six years ago. I felt like such an early adopter, everyone who came in my house loved to check out my crazy flat-panel TV.

I have a Vizio that is like this, in fact, its exactly like this and I picked it up for 1200. Great plasma for the price, can't complain and I've owned it for almost a year now.

@chucklebuck: My barber has one in his barber shop. I think its 42inches and its absolutely gorgeous.
@MacBandit: and what do you expect if you're getting an HDTV for 1600 dollars
I doubt they'd be pushing out economy panels though. I like vizio tv's and im planning on getting a plasma tv this year so hopefully i find a good one 36"-42" with picture in picture and a vga slot so i could connect my computer to it and watch some HD movies on it.

@Chester_Copperpot: Depends on which Sony or Samsung you are looking at. Some are no better that any el cheapo panel. Also, not all Vizio's are created equal. Some of their panels are actually well below average, while others are outstanding bargains.
You cannot give a blanket verdict on picture quality to any brand of set these days, save possibly Pioneer. I'll be waiting for a pro review of this set before I even consider it as a second set to my current set.
