Video Ringtones For iPhone Revolutionize Answering Your Phone
Posted by Jason Chen at 12:00 PM on July 1, 2008
What's more awesome and annoying than regular music ringtones? Video ringtones. iFoneTec have developed VideosTone, which lets you play back a standard formatted-for-iPhone video whenever someone calls. You can pick different ones for different people, like Devo for Lam and Ricky Martin for Jesus. We've been trying to try this app for ourselves but our download from Installer.app keeps timing out. The people on ModMyiPhone have had more luck getting Coldplay to dance on their phones, apparently. [ModMyiPhone]

I hope the phrase "video ringtones for iphone revolutionize answering your phone" was tongue in cheek, as - like all iphone revolutions - this feature has been available on many phones for many years. (just like a puny 2 MP camera and 3G capabilities)

Steve Gates?! They couldn't. They wouldn't!
My mind is boggled at the thought of a bespectacled, mock turtleneck-wearing Zen master who stamps out diseases in Africa while creating a unified computing platform, creating a world with a computer on every desktop and bringing down the RIAA, with an industry standard office suite to boot.
This would be a formidable being indeed.

Why do i see this app doing real well among the "ringback" tone users? When my phone rings I'll hear the tone and look at the picture ID/caller ID...I guess it's cool to show off? I dunno...to each his own I guess.

@ethanlechcharles: you also show it to everyone around you and successfully establish within a 10 ft radius a higher level of douchieness, unattained by just having the latest chris brown single for a ringtone.

@qhead7: The main point is who cares if this can be done on the iphone or any other phone. Oh you're phone was able to do it first? Congrats, at having such an annoying feature included on your phone. This is a 3rd party unofficial app, not something Apple came up with. And thank god for that, because this is an annoying concept, that I hope sticks with the "where u at?" niche and never becomes mainstream.

Here is usually what happens with phones:
Your iPhone rings, you take it out of your pocket and you press talk.
Here's what will happen with video ringtones:
Your iphone rings, you take it out of your pocket and you watch the video ringtone until the person hangs up or gets voicemail.

@dagamer34: Yeah, I'm definitely all for this from a oh that's clever, but there's no way I'd waste my battery life on it standpoint, but that's about it. I tend to subscribe to the IGN way of thinking-- if all the data in front of me doesn't do anything to make my life and day more efficient, I'm out. So, like IGN's endlessly overwrought design (talk about putting makeup on a pig, Lord) I'm going to have to tell this little artifact thanks but no thanks.

Yeah, this thing just pooped on my installer, which then pooped on my phone... I think I'm going to wait a few days and let them fix the repo. Sweet idea though - they should figure out a way to link it to the videorecorder app so that you can replace the embarrassing pictures that pop up when your friends call with embarrassing videos of them.

its funny that all of you that have phones that are apparently so much greater than the iPhone are still reading ALL of the iPhone posts AND commenting on them. I for one kinda like the idea of video ringtones. Those of you that are hating on it seem to think that you must have hour long videos for it. is it so hard to fathom that one could have a 5 second long video clip of your best friend faceplanting after a failed kickflip? or your girlfriend doing a little dance? not so bad anymore huh?

@elduro13: the point is: why didn't it deserve it's own post when it first came out for the [insert 3 year old phone here] ? i.e. this is nothing new and shouldn't be posted as something new and exciting. (or next we'll be hearing about the iphone getting an alarm clock or smth.)
back to topic: I've got some video caller ID's set up for people of whom I have a video clip but no picture, but it's pretty useless as I only get to see 0.5ms of the clip every time someone rings me.

This app is actually quite useless in it's current form. Hopefully it'll work better in later releases.
1. It's too friggen difficult to get a video to look good and play correctly as a "VideosTone." They even suggest that you buy a $40 piece of software to convert your video to the right size?!?
2. Even if you do get the video to look right when you're ringing, try putting your phone on silent. Oh yeah, it still plays the audio. The only way to combat this is to pull the audio from your video all together and then create a ringtone of the same bit and upload them separately to their respective folders.
3. Once you have the audio separate from the video you have to set them both to play in the preference pane... but they don't play at the same time!!! There's really no way to sync the audio with the video!
4. Are you kidding me?!? I just wasted two hours of my life converting and cropping and moving files to find out that it doesn't work. Yeah, if I wanted to have audio that's 3 seconds ahead of my video, I'd love this app.
As it stands... it is completely worthless.

@thechansen: "Do you edit out the n-word when you sing along to rap?"
I'm not sure why I was included with this, as I pretty much said I didn't see anything wrong with the comment (and you just edited the word out yourself). However (now, here's where I get into trouble), I don't consider rap to include singing. Perhaps a rudimentary vocalization or chanting? Singing (to me at least) implies melody. Music has been defined as melody, rhythm and harmony. To consider rap as music (at least in the modern sense), you need to ascribe to the "one out of three ain't bad" school of music theory. I do enjoy music that has rap and "urban" influences, but I'm not down with the notion that some people can say (or "sing") a word and others can't.
I guess, in other words, that I totally reject the entire premise of your question. Please feel free to try again, I'm not trying to be difficult.

ahhh this is awesome. My name is joe and im only 13 but i figured out how to convert the video ringtones to my iphone from my computer. Since a lot of people are having trouble with this i'll give a step by step tutorial. First go to sources under installer and add [app.ifonetec.com], then refresh the sources. Then click the intall button and go to the categorie button and click ifonetec. Then chose videostone and download it. After you download it restart your phone. Then go to settings and click videostone and enable it. After you enable it, go to this source on your computer [www.appleiphoneschool.com] and follow the instructions to # 1 and then download a ssh program. Once the ssh program is downloaded connect your iphone by typing in the i.p adress which u can find in the wifi section of your iphone. then select root as your username and alpine as your password. Once its connected go to root, which is iphone, on your computer and click var/mobile/media/videotone/video then from your computer drag a M4V video into it. And voila then go to videotone on your iphone under settings and chose the video.

thank you "thechansen." If you need some help also with converting videos to M4V format, i recommend this program [www.mediaconverter.org] This can convert any link like youtube to mpv, its simple to use, and just click convert a video or music by url, then chose the file m4v, then fro video codec chose mpeg-4 and for resolution its 320 x 240, then just download the video. Easy as pie, then just drag it to var/mobile/media/videotone/video. And just to let you know thechansen it took like 3 hours of research to figure out how to do this, and how to do this for free, so im not that smart, but thankyou for the complimant anyway. Oh and i almost forgot, you can make your video the new Coldplay commercial! its awesome
