USB Watch is Deconstructed Electronic Geekiness In Action
Posted by Kit Eaton at 9:09 PM on July 23, 2008
This concept USB watch, dubbed "Timeless" is either a fabulously ironic piece of deconstructivist electronic art, or a geeky overload. Whichever way you look at it, it's kinda neat: basically it's a simple digital watch, with an internal battery that's charged when you plug it into a USB socket. And then the same USB socket plugs back into the watch face, secured with PCB mount-style latches, with the ribbon cable as a strap. It's a concept... but I could rattle off a pretty long list of people I know who'd probably love to own one. [DesignBrothers via CoolestGadgets]

Me likey, but yeah, we need ram, water resistance, and an invisible way to adjust the wrist band. And I don't think color is lame, quite the contrary.

@nutbastard: Think Geek already has ordinary looking watches with flash drives built in but this has way more geek sexyness going on.

Ditto @everyone on the flash chips.
However i want this thing to kill the display when it's not plugged into itself.
And I didn't (and still don't for sure) know that you could get USB plug IDCs. Hmmm.

This would be sooooo much cooler with like... a 22" high def monitor and 4 gigs of RAM. /sarcasm
No, seriously. Please let me buy one.

It should have a flash drive and an LCD faux-analog face.

@Aristeia: LOL, i can't believe you went there. Bravo man, Bravo. Anyway, If this also was a flash drive that would be kick ass.

@hiimcliff: Yes, put 4gb of flash in it, make it water resistant (so you can rinse/wipe off the "Sweat, dirt, arm hair, spilled water, coffee or beer...") and I'm sold!
Given the nature of its construction I would imagine that this could be mass produced incredibly inexpensively!

It needs a small LCD screen so you can display anything you want. Oh, yes, and internal flash memory.

I haven't worn a watch in over a decade. I'm willing to go back if it includes this. Charging with USB? Yes, Kaiser wants.

Yes, but will it blend?
No, but seriously. It doesn't double as a flash drive? How could they not put that in there?

It would be geekier if they took off the glued-on USB piece and left the 10-pin dual row crimp header to fend for itself.

@Curves: It's not that hard to waterproof this. Or at least to make it water resistant. I highly doubt anyone's going reef or wreck diving while wearing this. Except maybe w/VR. ;)
What I want is a professional looking LCD nametag w/ a flash drive in it. Not the colored LED ones, b/c they look immature. Something I could wear at work, and not get a laugh, but would be extremely useful.

Sweat, dirt, arm hair, spilled water, coffee or beer...a few of the many things that will mess this watch up, not to mention forgetting to charge it. Cool concept for the mega-nerd but not very practical.

That is freaking awesome, I want one! I'd buy it with out a second thought. But I don't think I would pay over 50 USD for it.
However, should it come with build in memory to store data like some people on here have suggested, I'd be willing to pay for the normal price of say the 1GB memory stick plus 50USD. That, and it's much better to have the memory on your wrist then to have it in your pocket. I love the idea!

@oldgraygeek: I haven't worn a watch in years either. Not since I tattooed a sundial onto my forearm. Wanna know what time it is? BAM! and I point to the middle of the sundial. One up that USB watch.

If it actually doubled as pendrive, and charged via usb also, would be pretty cool.
Also nice if the usb plug would detect when it's unplugged from the watch and disable the lcd do conserve power when it's not on the wrist.
