Up: New Pixar Movie Has Us Completely Puzzled
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 1:00 AM on July 28, 2008
With Wall-e still hot in our minds, Pixar has shown their new movie teaser at Comic-Con 08. It's called Up and the movie plot has us completely puzzled:
The hero of the film is a 78-year-old man named Carl Fredricksen, who walks around hunched over with a tripod cane. When he was a kid he met a girl named Ellie, who grew up in small midwestern town. The two fell in love and eventually got married. Her dream was always to explore the world and visit paradise falls, but as usually happens, life got in the way. They were never able to make good on their promise, and Ellie eventually passed away. Now Carl is a widower living alone in his small home. Developers are threatening to move him into an old folks home.
Seems risky for an animated movie, but also has the potential to become one incredible story. We can only hope that Carl learns how to use his GPS before taking off. [The HDR Room]

This is a brief i found by the way this is PIXAR/DISNEYS first true 3-D movie
"The movie opens with Carl as a young kid in the '30s. They showed us this opening with storyboard reels. Carl is a chubby kid, arm in a cast and he makes friends with an adorable ball of energy named Ellie.
She wants to follow her hero explorer out in the wilds on adventures. She wants to show Carl something, but makes him cross his heart and swear he won't tell anyone. He does and she shows him her adventure book. A scrapbook with clippings from her explorer hero, a guy named Muntz.
She says when she gets big she's going to go where he went. She's going to South America ("It's like America, but south," she says matter of factly). She has drawings of waterfalls and says she's going to live there some day. It's a place called Paradise Falls.
The rest of the pages are blank and she says she's saving them for all the adventures she's going to have… the only problem is she doesn't know how she's going to get there. Carl has a balloon in the room and she says, "That's it! You can take us in a blimp! Swear you'll take us!" She makes him cross his heart. "Good, you promised. No backing out!"
Carl is wide-eyed, clearly in love with this girl, in love with her spirit and enthusiasm. He barely speaks.
Ellie and Carl get married. They're happy together. Carl sells balloons as they build their house. The years go by. They're still young and playful. In love. They have picnics, look at clouds and see different shapes. Eventually Carl points out one in the shape of a baby. From here on out she sees nothing but babies in the clouds and smiles.
Then we see them sitting in the doctor's office. It's dark and grey. Ellie has her face in her hands, crying as the doctor shakes his head no.
She sits in their front yard. She's sad. Carl comes to cheer her up. He brings her the old Adventure book and she smiles again.
They make a Paradise Falls jar and put money and coins into it. The pile starts to grow but a series of events happen over time. Car tires blow out, the coin pile decreases. They put more money in it and Carl has his leg in a cast and the money decreases. The roof blows off in a storm, etc.
Now they're elderly and the Paradise Falls jar is empty, forgotten. Carl loving looks at his elderly wife doing the daily chores. She's happy, but you get the feeling that he's sad for not giving her what he promised her. He looks at the crayon drawing of Paradise Falls she had in her adventure book and makes a trip to the travel place.
He has two tickets to South America. He hides them in the picnic basket and takes her out on a picnic. He makes it to the top of the hill. She doesn't, collapsing halfway up. He runs to her.
Next we're in a hospital. He's very sad. She pushes her adventure book to him and makes him cross his heart. He does.
Next we see him slouched, wearing a black suit. He's surrounded by hundreds of balloons… if I remember right they all had her name on them.
Carl lives on a few more years before his house is threatened by impending construction. So, he ties thousands and thousands of balloons to his roof with the intention of sailing to South America and bringing Ellie, in spirit, to Paradise Falls.
He apparently can steer his house with his weathervane.
But he has a stowaway when he makes this journey. A chubby asian kid named Russell, a boy scout trying to get his last merit badge, one for assisting the elderly.
They make it to S. America, but just before they get to where they need to go they crash and thrown from the house. The house starts to float away and just before it's out of reach, they grab on to a garden hose and keep it from leaving them.
Neither of them can climb back up to it, but they don't want to leave it, so they each tie a line to themselves and traverse the South American jungles pulling the house behind him like a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon for the last 15 miles."

I will watch anything that Pixar puts out. They have wonderful characters, compelling stories and jaw-dropping animation. These by themselves would ensure an above-average movie. On top of that though, is the sheer density of their pictures. There is no extraneous fluff; every frame is packed with information both overt and subtle that underscores character or story points. The filmmakers always seem to be having a brilliant time. The final touches to their films make them sparkle. Wall-E's fully charged sound or Cupcake-in-a-cup almost physically reach out from the screen and yank the audience's face into a smile.
This new picture looks to have a completely fresh take on their proven formula and should propel them to new heights (if you'll forgive the pun!). The comment that it seems risky is spot on. It will need to deal frankly with death and how it transforms life. There is the potential for greatness with this film and I will be first in line for it!

After the uber-environmental wall-e (awesome movie), what do you think the odds are that when he finally gets to paradise falls it's not exactly a paradise anymore? Actually, the whole idea of him traveling across the americas in a floating house sets up a brilliant god-like perspective of urban sprawls, slums, trash dumps ripe for some very pointed commentary.

@mrsalty:
That sounds fucking great! Anyways, I really don't see anything in the near future topping Wall-E. What really made Wall-E stand out was the way it handled the dialogue. Hell, a good part of the first hour went almost completely without words, mere gesturing and the use of masterful storytelling really brought this one to life and much more.
Really tough to see any movie anytime in the next few years attempting such a compelling method of storytelling, and being able to pull it off with amazing success. Either way, I can't wait to see this.

@eddiesdguy: I'll still be seeing it. Pixar's storytelling is high enough in my book to warrant seeing the adventure even if I knew the ending already.
And since Pixar films end on higher notes (another part of why I watch them), one would technically know the ending already.
Also, isn't Toy Story 3 already announced for 2010? Pixar has movies lined up all the way until 2012, if I recall correctly...and Up isn't the hardest story of the lot to pull off.

What's with people's obsessions with balloons as a mode of transportation.
There was a guy who did the same thing with a chair, and his plan was to shoot out balloons if he got too high. He dropped the gun, and eventually got up to 30,000ft.

While yes, it is wikipedia, the sources check out. There are sources for the upcoming movies Newt(Yay last-two-creatures-so-procreate-already-storyline!), The Bear and the Bow, and Cars 2. These were announced as started (and I bet it'll take the entire time to make em, too).
Toy Story 3 hitting the recall issue is win, though.
@Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!: I wouldn't mind an Incredibles 2, actually.
@kvstud: I saw it again in a local mom and pop theater, and Presto is still win. Can't wait for BURN-E, though (remember the robot that got locked out of teh spaceship after the dance sequence? Yeah, we get to follow him :D)

Maybe Pixar's Old Dude in the teaser is trying out for Google's $30 million Lunar X PRIZE.
If they manage to get the guy up to the moon, they win right, ... right ?
So this is how Pixar wins $30 mil which is nothing compared to the gajillion dollars they already have. So they donate the money to curing something. Happy ending follows.
The END.
p.s. I'm more excited about the short that they will screen before the movie starts, I went for Wall-E the second time just to watch Presto! again :D

@masterage: I wonder how they'd handle the glaring absence of the voice for Slinky. Toy Story 2 was superior to the first, but I wonder if they could actually carry enough for the third. Also, Cars is also slated for a sequel, but I don't know if that's even strong enough to do. So far Newt is the one I'm really waiting for, because it deals with species extinction.
I wonder if The Incredibles is being considered for a sequel. I'm not sure if Brad Bird would care to write up another one though.

Considering recent stories regarding people trying, failing, and subsequently dying while attempting to fly vast distances using nothing but small helium balloons, I think this movie might be Pixar's shark-jump. I really hate to say that, because I've loved all their movies. (Then again, I thought the same thing about Cars, and still rather enjoyed it.)
