Ultimate Matrix Collection On Blu-ray October 14
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:39 AM on July 30, 2008
The previously DVD and HD DVD-only Ultimate Matrix Collection is headed to Blu-ray October 14, which will be pretty much the same as the HD DVD version. It'll have 35 hours of extras, picture-in-picture commentary and a price tag of US$130. If you were that big a Matrix fan to spend US$130 on this, you probably already own it on HD DVD. I would like to know how a movie that wasn't shot in HD can be converted to a High Def movie. Anybody have any insight?

@Log1c: Oh I forgot about Final Flight of the Osiris. That one is just a short in-between for the movies, but The Second Renaissance is the anime 2-part prequel.

I'm just happy I can get the Animatrix in HD.

@Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!: That was the CG one right? That was pretty good. The other one I liked was when they were in feudal Japan (ish).

OOO It might be worth it, maybe for $90 though. The Planet Earth Bluray set is about $89. I've been waiting for the matrix to come out on Bluray but luckily that wasn't enough to convince me to get an xbox with hd dvd instead of a PS3, before bluray won.

$130? Ah, can you say "OH HELL NO!!" Seriously, the 1st movie was great, the Animatrix was fun, but the last 2 movies were a waste of time and film on par with Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. Even in High Def, $130 is way too much for such a craptasic franchise.

@Log1c: I purchased The Second Renaissance from iTunes. I wouldn't mind owning the DVD, but that two-part short is the only thing I actually liked out of it.
These "Ultimate" Matrix collections are all cheapened by the fact that that Wachowskis extended their story into that stupid online game.

@Dj75728: Plus the Animatrix, but only two of those were actually good.

No thanks. Matrix was good, but not $130 good. I got all three of the movies for $30 or so.

130 dollars is the suggested retail price. youll see this everywhere for about 80-90, so everyone can stop their bitching. if you have watched these movies on hd dvd it is totally worth the money. the transfers are amazing. the animatrix is amazing too. if your really into the story behind the matrix the animatrix is genius. if your not then they suck.

@thecodingeye: They use a fancy scanning machine that scans in each frame from the original film copy at an insane resoluion (over 4k if Im correct), then the video is cleaned up for artifacts along with numerous color correction/sharpness etc problems then you have an HD movie

I hope those are the commentaries I'm thinking of: the movie critics dismantling the trilogy as a bunch of pointless crap. It's one thing to listen to, quite another to watch.

Considering the extras are most likely not in HD it serves no purpose to buy this...
I bought the Ultimate collection on DVD for a fraction of the price then bought just the movies on HD-DVD for about $30.

At $90, the blu ray set better have more stuff than the HD-DVD set.

Jeez, 35 hours of extras? All I really want is the first movie on HD along with the commentary. Don't care about anything else.
Where's my $100 Blu-Ray player? Ah, a few more years, you say? I'll wait.
