Tron 2 Trailer Video Makes Pants Wet Worldwide

It's a tiny bootleg video, but I don't care. You can see that the 3D looks amazing, the new lightcycles are stunning (and move like real bikes), the world and the whole mood is Batman-like dark. And Jeff Bridges... well, he is Jeff Bridges. What can I say, he looks like a badass version of the Dude. "It's just a game!" he shouts. No, it's not. It's Tr2n. At last. Note: excuse the excitement, but I saw the original in the movie theatre, and 200 times after that. With War Games, it's what got me into technology when I was a kid, and ultimately here in Giz. The only thing that has me worried is that the characters are in the computer world are fully 3D. The good news: George Lucas is not involved in this one, but rumour is that Pixar may be. The gentle on the cameraperson, this is better than nothing - maybe he had to hold it at an awkward angle to avoid it being confiscated.
I REALLY HOPE Wendy Carlos does the music for this one; or at least, remixed versions by some progressive electronic musicians who won't just add a 4-on-the-floor beat, but lovingly embellish the original themes. BT and Hybrid come to mind (altho it seems unlikely), and even tho Orbital is defunct, the Hartnoll brothers have dabbled in Carlos-esque melodies. Don Dorsey may be a distant contender. ;)
I've never seen the first Tron intact, but I did hear the entire soundtrack.
Would be kewl if Pixar WAS involved; it'd make sense, them being the masters of mainly cartoony but definitely computer animation. :D

@J.T.: loved the video game. it had it's faults, to be certain, but it totally nailed the look and feel of the movie. some of the levels (like the PDA one) were just awesome.
wonder if they will get wendy carlos to d the score again (a big part of what i liked about the first movie.)

I'm still in awe that I got goosebumps and shakes when I saw this. Saw the original movie in theaters so many years ago and alongside Blade Runner, Tron has always been an enduring classic for me.
However, if other remakes of my childhood favorites (Transformers, Episodes 1,2 & 3, The Pink Panther) are a hint of what's to come, I'd just as soon take a handy-cammed shaky trailer as the last I see of it.

WHOA... I'm speechless. Are you kidding me!? Remember when Disney Interactive made Tron 2.0 the video game? They had done it because they thought it was going to be more profitable than making a second movie. I guess they were wrong! Hell, I loved Tron, loved Tron 2.0, and will absolutely salivate for Tr2n. Bring it on.

this has seriously been my favorite movie [tron 1] as a kid - and even still; today. most of my friends know me as the tech-geek - but every one of them knows my favorite movie is tron. i think i've watched that movie over a thousand times! being as i was only born in 1984... i'm pretty sure i didn't get to see it in the theatre (ha!), but it must have been awesome if any of you had. tron was the biggest influence growing up, and it STILL affects the way i think today. i just am holding my breath that they don't bomb this one - but so far, looks amazing!

1) Pixar. Ha ha, yeah right. Where does that crap get started?
2) Hey, look - variable speed shots and stuff flying in front of impossible computer-animatey cameras! I love being a fanboy about stuff that's been made by people that know what they're doing, but this "made-by-fanboy" music video style amateur hour stuff is awful.
3) I suppose the original Tron wasn't really the pinnacle of film-making either, and I loved it. I'll still watch Tron 2 when it out and probably mess my underpants. I'm not ashamed.

I see there is a lot of love for Tron in these parts, and I guess I need to go back and watch the original (although I remember the hype being much more exciting than the movie), but it is always concerning to me when a movie looks more like an excuse for new video games than something that might have involved even a minor amount of script analysis. Sorry - just my honest (and, admittedly, worthless) analysis.

This movie was my all time favourite as a kid. I recall countless hours chucking Frisbees at my friends in the basement mimicking what we saw on the screen (even our parents and the odd trip to the hospital didn't stop the fun). Then a few years back Tron was re-released on DVD and I bought it hoping to recapture my childhood. Not a good idea it just spoiled the memory. But now, now it looks like they have made the film that I remember as a child. I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to its release.

mmm, just to clarify one thing here:
when someone says 'I am wetting my pants' that means:
-woman: might be sexually aroused to the point where glands around the vagina secrete gooey stuff
-man: is incontinent
It's not the same as when you say 'Tron va dejar pantaletas mojadas en todo el mundo' because 'pantaletas' implies that we are talking about women.
And it's not a linguistical problem either, I think quite a few native speakers also already use that expression although they are male and I guess there might also be women talking about how something gives them a hard-on or women getting kicked in the balls. All that would be emancipation taken a step too far.
Anyway, that said, might be interesting to watch the movie, although I don't have any clear recollection of Tr0n 1...

@jstimson: No, the original world of tron was a translation of the world of software back then, a humanized representation of the type of software and available at the time, which translated into those images in the mind of the artists that created the original movie.
Today, things have changed and so has the world of Tr2n.

Now it just looks like some guys on motorbikes. What happened to the deadly effect of running into the trail? Looks like the guy just gets flipped around a bit instead of being wiped out of existence.

TRON was frikin amazing! I bought it right away when it came out on DVD. (Dunno why, but Disney Movies VHS and DVD have shitty sound - they all make my center speaker crackle at decent volume) The lighcycle scene should be according to 90 degree turns, it's the reflexes that made Flynn great at the game (and that he invented it).
Will MCP still be British? Will Dillinger be in it?!
Remember, TRON took place in less than one second (I think, a very short time anyway) in the first place. I guess with clock speeds up to what they are now the movie could last forever.
Oh, and douchebags who think "First" is something special... Kindly remove yourself from the gene pool. Your teachers were right, you'll always be the last winner.

Apprently in the new movie Tron is a shell of what he once was. His code was augmented by a subsription service and people just couldn't afford the service. This slowed him down and made him less effective. He is only active in the torrents now.
Yori's code was was bought out by Porn Tracker, and she lives a happy life replicated on billion computers, keeping track of site usage and doing desktop stripteases.
The Bits have unionized and are on strike. To make matters worse there is an internal conflict with in the Bits, separating the 0's and 1's. The polarity between their views has lead to a lot of virtual knifings.
The Game Grid has degenerated. It is no longer about skill, but about blocking pop-ups.
There's more, but I don't want to kill the film for anybody.

For those people that mind how the lightcycles are not doing 90° turns or the rider not being immediately snuffed into a 0.
Check out the original trailer, slightly passed the middle you'll see quite evidently how the cycles can maneuver fully analog as soon as they're not on the grid anymore, and the tanks can destroy the cycles and just "eject" the riders without directly harming them.
The critics are basing their opinions too heavily on what I'd assume would be your vague recollection of the original or just on their past experience of playing the countless lightcycle mini-games all over the web.
Personally I'm very hyped for TR2N and the name is good enough for me too.

Say what you will about Tron, it was THE movie that got me into Scifi. My dad got a bootleg copy on video tape when I was very young, and I must have watched it over 500 times. Hell, its the ONE VCR tape I still own. I am SOOOOO happy to see Tr2n become a reality after all this time!

@MastaFalse: Garfield gets a sequel and Shrek is getting number 4 in a year, why won't the first almost 90% CG movie not get one?
If you don't think those bikes are cool, you probably are the son of Evil Knievel...

Instead of going back, and watching TR1N, play the PC game from a few years back, it's better than the movie, and you will get to remember TR1N in all it's glory.
Tron rocked, no doubt about it, Coin-Op Tron was quite good as well.

I have mixed feelings about these (basically) remake of the classic (Tron, Terminator, etc.) which I grew up watching - like most of the Gen X... I think the current generation of kids deserve their own new classic though. We need something original... Seriously....

To all you Tron-poseurs saying the lightcycles shouldn't move like real motorcycles... If you had actually SEEN Tron you would know they only made those 90-degree turns on the game grid. Outside in the open system they moved like real motorcycles.

Sorry if I sound dramatic, but I barely could contain the emotion/tears...Yes, Tron & War Games were the biggest influences on what I do today and what I'll do for the rest of my life.

to quote the simpsons 3d episode
"can you describe it?"
"Well, you ever see the movie tron?"
no, no, no, no, yes.. I mean no
Actually it does look like a decent sequel, and the fact that jeff bridges has returned to be in it seals the deal

Even on a crumby bootleg, the sound design is stunning. And I like the general morose tone.
But the Matrix-esque slow motion "look at this! look at this!" shots make me a little apprehensive. They feel inconsistent with what I would expect from a Tron film. For example, if the blue rider had hit the wall and went flying & sliding at normal speed, it would have felt more brutal.
Time will tell. Every franchise from my childhood has been ruined by mediocre sequels and "re-imaginings." I have my fingers crossed that this will be the exception.

Ok, I think I have found a flaw with the new movie already. The preview show an old Flynn meditating and then a younger version of himself that is supposedly his CLU program. The flaw is that in the original movie, programs age with their users. Think of the the old Dr Walter Gibbs, who says that he founded ENCOM in his garage. One of his earliest programs, Dumont, is the same age as Gibbs in the real world. How has the CLU not aged along with his user Flynn?

The reason for the poor video quality is that the people at SDCC are told NOT to record any moving images from the panels, and this guy must have had his phone in his lap not to get kicked from the panel.

I was actually there for this. Disney was presenting for Race to Witch Mountain which didn't seem to draw as much of a crowd as some of the other presentations (despite Carla Gugino), so the hall wasn't that crowded. As soon as the RtWM group was done, they announcer said we were in for a treat and that there would be no other trailers or video of this until sometime next year. As soon as we realized it was TR2N, there was an energy in the crowd. That was the highlight of Comic-Con for me.

I wonder where this was filmed? A Tron convention? If in America (which probably isnt a dangerous assumption), do you always whoop and cheer at a movie trailer???

@mr.dandy:
true, they can make curves when they're not in the game grid, but these clearly are. remember, when they leave the game grid, they also lose their jet walls. and, of course, the statement by blue player that they're PLAYING THE GAME.
