Tricycles Are Just Bicycles from the Future
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:15 AM on July 11, 2008
While the tricycle/Big Wheel are both throwbacks to our past, one designer believes that three wheels are the future. Felipe Tolomei designed this three-wheeled Rabbit bike with a clever idea--put two small electric motors on each back tire. Now if we would only widen each of those motorised wheels to dragster dimensions and stick in a carbon-spewing dual exhaust, I think we'd have ourselves a serious concept. [coroflot via gearfuse]

In the future you will not need your feet so they will be geneticly modified into another set of hands.

Why does everything in the future look like it's built from k'nex? Did we run out of screws and metal?

@DeadWriter: On the handle-bars apparently, and they also double as your brakes!

That being said, that thing looks uncomfortable.

They're also what I stopped riding when I was like 5!

This thing would work better if it had some sort of enclosure to protect you from the elements. Oh, and could carry a payload. Kinda like:
The orange is nice though.

only problems i have with this thing is that it would look silly riding it down a modern day street, and the wide wheels are pointless.
it cool looking...but overall would be out of place no matter where it went.

Back in Buffalo State College lecture hall was a bank of rear projection screens. Ken Jacobs, indie art film-maker had a stereo projector behind them as part of his tribute to Charles Ives, a live performance piece "Lost Doll Found" and at one point the audience was asked to put on their 3D glasses. His son rode his tricycle out in front of the projector behind the screen and out popped this 3D tricycle and him which this reminded me of. (ca 1974) Buffalo, NY was the "Hollywooden of the East" one summer.

That saddle seems a bit narrow. This was clearly not designed for Americans.

I would totally sport this thing. Now if only i had somewhere to ride it to.

I don't have a link to recall the actual information, but 3-wheelers were out-lawed a while back from being produced anymore. I'm talking about the off-roading type. A friend of mine still owns one, but they don't make new ones anymore, why you ask? Try riding one and not dieing and you'll quickly understand. They are EXTREMELY dangerous and put you at far greater risk than a 4 or 2 wheeled vehicle.
I think that's the point of this design. He's attempting to make them work safer by first, putting you in a cruiser sitting position, and 2nd, keeping your feet much much farther from those back wheels. When a 3 wheeler starts to tip, your instinct puts your feet down. On a normal one this causes the vehicle to ride over your own leg and either rip it off your body, or pull you over and off the vehicle and under it.
Seriously wicked sounding isn't it?

Kind of a neat idea. Combine the driver exposure of a motorcycle with the moving instability of a tricycle to get something not good in bad weather and at speed. Would be a home run if the back wheels were the turning wheels.

That thing does look comfortable. I dont think the wheels positioned/angled like that is a good idea tho. I'd rather it be straight than inclined.
Looks cool though.
All it is missing is a kick ass engine and dual exhausts and im sold xD

Two wheels in the front, one in back is a much more stable design for cornering.
It's odd that people don't really like those "reverse trike" designs even though they are more practical.
This design is certainly aesthetically pleasing though.

@pixelfish: My uncle still has one, and ride the thing every time I stop by his farm. I like to call it Darwin's Tricycle, at least I will right up until I lose a leg to it. Then I will sue the manufacture, because I can't help being stupid!
