Tracker Checks Apple Store iPhone 3G Stock Every 15 Minutes
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 1:15 AM on July 25, 2008
While Apple's website updates its Apple Store iPhone 3G stock count every night after 9PM, the guys running the iPhone 3G availability tracker at Top Muffin say the data is actually updated throughout the day. So it hits the feed every 15 minutes, theoretically providing the most up-to-date stock count around. Or you could just, you know, call the store and have a real live person tell you to bring some sunscreen, an umbrella and some s'mores since a wave of diarrhea cut the line down to a mere 7 hours. That feed was cut off days ago. You should check your sources before reprinting something like that.

Cali-forni-way. We hear they have Internet there. LOL. I waited at the Meatpacking District store on Saturday the 12th. Even though I was able to get work done while waiting, I thought the total wait (waiting plus purchase took 5 hours) was too long. Nice to know that my wait was not in vain! Poor suckers don't have their phones yet. And I have iPint to keep me hydrated, PhoneSaber to ward off attackers and Shazam to impress people.

@SomeoneUKno: Well did you give him your checking or savings account number? I heard he hooks you up faster with both. Nigerian internets tubes are smaller than American ones, so you have the split the money up so it doesnt get clogged. At least thats what he told me...

@thechansen: Yeah, they told me that I would get my 3 million when I signed up to help that poor dying Nigerian prince. I still dont understand why I had to send him 20 thousand dollars...

They still have a queue set up in front of the Apple stores at the Florida Mall and Mall at Millenia in Orlando...
I hardly go to the mall, but the few times I've been in the last couple weeks, there's usually a line of 30 or so people

This is getting regoddamndiculous. It may be the Jesus Phone 2.0 we are talking about here but it is still just a damn phone! Do we really need inventory trackers? What's next? People stalking Apple employees, and hiding in the bushes outside of Apple stores waiting for the UPS truck? Come to think of it, it probably is happening.
Someone please, STOP THE MADNESS!

this morning @ 7:15, the soho store only had the 16 gig black in stock. they cut the line off after about 30 people... i grabbed one and i must say that, once we were all let in 8 when the store opened, the process moved pretty quickly.

Oh, and amateur analysis of the data as of right now is that the 16 GB White model isn't nearly as popular as the others. I wonder how many people have bought white ones just because it was their only choice?

retarded...its better to wait for the initial rush to pass and then waltz in when its cooled down...like with the new batman movie...hell with opening nite... crowded and noisy...

I don't know where they're getting their sources, but this is totally incorrect. I went over to the Apple store SOHO, NY, and they don't have any. But this thing said earlier today they had only the 8GB and 16GB, but not the white. Now it says all of them are available. None of them are available! I call BS!

That feed is showing null, which in programming and databases means no value, not zero.

Apple's JSON feed doesn't seem to be very accurate. Hording or not, some stores have had stock when the feed said none was available.

If you change the clock on your computer to after 9:00pm and reload the Apple.com page it will give you real time stock notice.

@Rain-man: Well it uses Apple's own JSON feed, found here. And the tracker is showing no stock anywhere right now.

@OGHowie: That's funny. I wonder if it was my comment that tipped them off because I double checked it before and after I posted that. Oh well, that's how I got mine, the guy activating my phone didn't believe me when I told him about it.

...and Apple has cut them off.
It says: "Evidently, Apple did not like their 3G iPhone availability data being used outside of apple.com.
They have changed all inventory values to NULL in their JSON file. I guess it beats a cease-and-desist letter."

Also, I have heard the new shipments arrive typically around noon each day and that if you push your system time forward to 9pm that night it would allow you to see the stock for that day.
Not sure if it works though becuase I have not tried it.

Well I went to the North Park Mall in Dallas, TX Apple Store on the "Release Day" at approximatly 5pm. by 7:30pm I was walking out to my car with a shiny new Black iPhone3G!! Wahoo.....
So then my wife decides to get one, after I told her to get one while with me on "release day" but she did not, so we waited in line for nearly 4 hours on Tuesday night (yes this past tuesday which was over a week after release day) and she got her shiny new white iPhone3G.

Pretty sure, they're just disabling the feed during operating hours - at least this has been the pattern for the past few days. Check back after 9 and it should be up again. I doubt they'd disable it yet, the lines outside their stores have yet to disappear.

So one of the local stores that was labeled as not having any phones to sell did have phones today - and they're still selling them. Had I gone to _that_ store instead of the store with a listed inventory (and which sold out before my spot in line) I'd have a phone by now. The webtool needs to be fixed.

goddamn it, i wish i had caught this while it was still up. When I call up the apple stores in my area (just far enough to make it "expensive" to drive to) they're not very helpful and act kind of annoyed.

Am I the only one that finds that if you change your computer's clock to past 9 PM, then the website will show you the stock information?

The Apple availability website uses your system clock to check the time, so to see availability at anytime throughout the day just set your system clock past 9:00 P.M. and you can see it.

The availability checker on Apple's website uses your system clock, so all you have to do to check availability at anytime during the day is set your system clock to after 9:00 P.M. and it will work fine.

I called the Apple Store here in PHX and they said "hurry down but if you get here in the next 30 minutes you'll definitely get one". Stood in line for about an hour and walked with an 8gb. I got the MobileMe setup too and really that is about as pointless as it gets, too bad I don't have exchange anymore at my new company.
