TiVo De-lists Series3 Boxes From the Online Store
TiVo's removed their Series3 DVR from the main shop, leaving only the TiVo Series2 at US$150 and TiVo HD at US$300. What's the upshot of this? To us, it seems like they're either phasing out the Series3 entirely in favour of the cheaper-to-produce TiVo HD, or they're liquidating the units for an upcoming Series4 featuring all those bad arse things we wanted. If you still adamantly want a TiVo Series3, you'll have to look elsewhere, since the entry buried deep inside the store is out of stock. [TiVo via Engadget]

@Darrone: Um...what? They've been continuously adding functionality via software updates which is something few other companies do. YouTube, Amazon unbox, multi-room viewing, external expansion - to name a few. Even the introduction of the HD unit itself was pro-consumer, essentially a price cut on the series 3.

The one thing I miss about my TiVo HD is the lack of a clock on the front of the unit. It is probably the only advantage that the stock Comcast DVR had over the TiVo...

Probably a bit of both, but in the short term, they want to simplify their inventory. Too bad, because the S3 is a great unit - I paid the early adopter penalty, and have been loving this unit since day 1. That said, the HD is almost as good and a lot cheaper, so it is a rational decision. I do like walking past the unit and seeing what shows it is recording.

Tivo hasn't been going in any good-for-consumer directions lately. I feel like there going to do something stupid next.

The S3 has been unavailable from Tivo directly for months now - Amazon still has them for sale tho.

It seems unlikely they'd launch a Series 4 right now. I'm not aware of anyone publishing anything about it (not even rumors).
It seems like Series3 was getting press a good 6 months before it was released.

@Zlevee: um, the discussion of adding Tivo Ads? Advertising in tivo menus? The "your lifetime subscriptions isnt actually a lifetime subscription unless you pay us more money" thing? The failure to support their own TTG plus software?

I got my S3 In november 2007, I love it, but I have had an issue with reliability...I just got my 4th S3 shipped to me, and a Tivo CSR let slip that there have been a lot of problems with them, so they may be doing a major revamp...

@Darrone: I'm not aware of this Tivo-to-Go support issue or the lifetime subscription issue you mention, but the lifetime subscription in general was always shady to me because it was tied to the specific box you bought and transferring it was usually difficult. The advertising thing is the only one that seems like it's new -- and, meh, this idea was probably inevitable for all television service providers.
in my opinion the overall user experience is still better than what others offer, and I see their overall trend as adding value to existing devices.
