TI Builds Pico Projector Into Blackberry Curve
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:39 AM on July 3, 2008
Texas Instruments has expressed its intention to build its LED Pico tech into mobile devices before, but this is the first well-implemented example to be properly demonstrated. Crunchgear got a brief go on the Frankenberry, and it looks like it works just fine. While the small clip doesn't totally assuage our fears that such a system will produce poor images, the respectable projection size and apparent brightness are both promising for such an early prototype. Checking my MVIS stocks now...
...Ah, crap! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE STOCK MARKET??!!
I bought stock in MVIS (they make the Pico projector) and I've lost over half of my money. I don't understand because it's such an obviously cool product and they seem to have the best/smallest working prototype. Good thing I took my friends advice and only invested what I was comfortable losing.

You would think the bulb would get incredibly warm....I'm curious about the technology behind these.

At 0:09 you can see light shining through the fake screen.

I wonder if you could use it to project other peoples faces on to yours, and other such shenanigans?

Are the phone and the projection actually ever in the video at the same time together? It doesn't really look like the projection is coming from the Blackberry.

you would have to leave the thing laying flat on a surface if you wanted to use it for anything other than a multi-colored flashlight.

That looks a lot like the dummy blackberries they have at cell phone kiosks. I.E. they built a projector into an empty blackberry shell. big deal.

This would be amazing for watching movies on an airplane. Just point the thing at the fold-up tray on the seat in front of you, and BLAMO! However, I'm sure battery life would be an issue.

That's what it is a dummy phone, it's just a paper screen. Nothing to see here at all. If they would have shoved it into a coconut or pile of dog crap that would have been more exciting.

Another fake pointer is that the actual BB lcd screen looks fake, and is on the default main menu icons... wouldn't it be in an APP showing what the F you were doing with the projector? Tomfoolery.

This is shit hot. I haven't been gripped by a real fit of tech envy in a long time, but I'd really like some of this. I don't even know how often I'd use it, but I'd love it as an ace in the hole.

The perfect customer for this is the pharmaceutical rep who visits doctor's offices to sell drugs - their whole day is presentations to 1 or 2 people. This is a lot better than passing a notebook back & forth

I doubt that these will ever catch on for mobile devices. However, i could see them being very useful for small screens. Assuming they get the luminosity/contrast up high enough to be useful of course.
After all, if I wanted a couple screens on my wall to display pictures I think I'd be tempted to install a couple of these on the light track instead of a large mounted screen.
Same goes for secondary screens at a work station. When you need a couple other windows to track process or display some secondary information just unfold a pair of these. Or for a fixed display onto a tabletop. If I wanted something in the kitchen to display recipes and messages or whatever I'd rather have one of these projecting onto the counter than an embedded screen that would get dirty.
Not to mention a million applications where you might want to project an image but current projectors are too bulky. I could see one of these installed in a sewing machine projecting a pattern onto the fabric as you sew.
Basically anywhere you might want a screen temporarily or without the hassle of embedding one or keeping it clean. Personally, anyone who fixates on these in mobile devices isn't using their imagination.

i dont know if anyone else noticed but the blackberry they used was a store dummy, or at least it looked alot like one...i work in a cell store and those dummys are hollow save for a wieght, which would make it easier to put the projector in, i also come to that conclusion b.c there isnt any images of what being projected on the screen....and the picture on the screen is really white, not like that of a real phone

@Metkis: Err I would use it. As long as it works well enough.
Seriously what ISNT cool about this? Why would you choose to watch your vids on a tiny phone screen as opposed to a larger one? Who wants to browse the web on their tiny ass phone screens that dont even display the whole page? Who wants to strain their eyes looking at a tiny screen while writing emails or text messaging? If you could design a phone that would turn on its side like a game controller so you could control the actions on screen (for anything, not just games) without looking at the actual phone it would be the best thing I can imagine. I would use the sh*t out of this!
Of course you lose the whole "privacy" factor but seriously, privacy is becoming less and less of an issue with most people.

Ok...all of you that are screaming FAKE...might want to actually READ the article. Maybe even click the link to the original article this was taken from. It says this is not a real functioning phone. The other article explains that they stripped everything else out. This is simply a smaller prototype of the projector itself. The previous versions were 2-3 times larger than the curve. If you want to bitch about something, bitch that John didn't relay the entire story, not that the builder is a sham. (Sorry John) It was never claimed to be a working phone. Personally I'm damned impressed that they were able to make a projector that tiny with such a good image.

@Metkis: Put it on an Iphone and I'd rock the hell out of it. I'm in a dark radiology department all day so the environment actually suits a projector. At most of the clinics I'm at I work all day by myself so I wouldn't be bothering anyone with it and some days I have all of 6 patients in 10 hours so yeah... I could use something other then a book to fill in the time and a lap top really doesn't fit into my scrubs well
