This May Be the First Man on the Planet to Get an iPhone 3G
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:38 PM on July 8, 2008
The guy grinning in this photo is called Jonny Gladwell, and he's from Auckland, New Zealand. Why's he grinning? He's first in the queue at the Auckland Vodafone shop. And due to the timings involved, that should make him the first person in the World to buy an iPhone 3G. Lucky bastard. [Image credit: Darryl Carey]
AU: Well, he'll be one of the first three people in the world - Vodafone NZ are opening three stores at 12:01 on Friday morning: Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. We'll be at the Auckland launch, so we'll try and have a chat with Jonny here and find out all his hopes and dreams on Thursday.

He has obviously got more money than sense. Vodafone NZ are charging $199 for the phone and $6,000 for the 2 yr term plan + call charges. Downloads limited to 1Gb per month. This is outrages!!!!!!

You don't need brains to be able to stand in line and spend money. Anyone willing to succumb to those prices in order to brag they have the new iPhone are as dumb as roadkill.

Johnny Gladwell was a fraud. The 'first person in the world' angle was cooked up by PR spin doctors from the agency Publicis. They paid the guy and drummed up media interest for their client the Yellow Pages. The news isn't all bad, sometimes it's just stupid.

I'll stroll up to my local AT&T store sometime between 7-8, and see if there's a line or not...they told me there had been about 25-30 people there for the 1G, so I'm curious to see if there are as many people so flustered over this new contraption...

I'm sure there are hundreds of behind the scenes people all over the world who have one before this guy. The most these queue jockeys can hope for is :
1. Being the first in the queue at their particular store to get an iPhone.
2. Getting a life one day.
Me - I'm waiting for the fuss to die down and see if I'm going to be royally screwed by o2 for an upgrade, only to find out that the iPhone 3G can't be used as a modem, or that some finance crippling bolt-on is the only way to achieve it.

This guy seems to be setting off all kinds of records because he will also be the first in the WORLD to get screwed by Apple on the iPhone 3G.
I waited on iPhone 1.0 release and got me a $200 savings, let's see what this release has in store to screw with people...I mean after all Apple has a track record for doing that sort of thing.

How sick must you be to camp in front of a shop.
Doesn't he have friends to spend the time with?
Doesn't those people have families to be with?
Don't they have nothing in their lifes but lifeless things?
America is the only country in the whole world where this sick behavior was noticed.

Those of you hatin on this maverick simply don't appreciate the value of being first. You were the same people laughing at:
James Cook , the 1st person to cross Antarctic Circle,
George Washington , the 1st US President,
Roald Amundsen, the 1st person to reach the South Pole,
Annie Taylor , the 1st woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel,
Neil Armstrong , the 1st man to walk on the moon,
Junko Tabei , the 1st woman to reach the summit of Mt. Everest,
and Buzzed, the 1st person to comment in this thread.
So to all you haters and you know who you are:
Either you don't appreciate the magnitude of Jonny Gladwell's accomplishment, or you are no better than the 2nd person to cross the Antarctic Circle, become US President, reach the South Pole, go over Niagara Falls in a barrel, walk on the moon, reach the summit of Mt Everest with lady parts, or comment in this thread, with your faces scrunched up in envy at those whose pioneering accomplishments predated your own.

4. "Annie Taylor , the 1st woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel" So what, anyone can fall down a waterfall.
5. "Neil Armstrong , the 1st man to walk on the moon" There is no such thing as the moon.

I just walked by the shop on the way to work. It is now a queue of two. Should I go down and queue up and be the 3rd in the world to get an 3G iPhone?

Sigh, why is it that Vodafone gets the iPhone but Verizon doesnt? Aren't they all part of the same company :P

I wonder if he and his friends saw the price of the plans? $80 per month for 250mb or $250 for 1gb... makes you wonder how a student will be paying for it.

@paul: Oh, now I see what you mean, you were meaning the first person in the world to buy one could be in Welly or Chch aswell, my bad. The first person will probably be in Welly, that's where the smartest people in New Zealand live.

@aelver: It's either in Auckland or he's in the wrong place in Welly or Chch, the midnight store in Auckland is at 171 Queen St, Welly it's 358 Lambton Quay and Chch it's 681 Colombo St. So judging by the 171 behind him i'd guess it's in Auckland
