This May Be the First Man on the Planet to Get an iPhone 3G

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:38 PM on July 8, 2008

The guy grinning in this photo is called Jonny Gladwell, and he's from Auckland, New Zealand. Why's he grinning? He's first in the queue at the Auckland Vodafone shop. And due to the timings involved, that should make him the first person in the World to buy an iPhone 3G. Lucky bastard. [Image credit: Darryl Carey]

AU: Well, he'll be one of the first three people in the world - Vodafone NZ are opening three stores at 12:01 on Friday morning: Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. We'll be at the Auckland launch, so we'll try and have a chat with Jonny here and find out all his hopes and dreams on Thursday.

He has obviously got more money than sense. Vodafone NZ are charging $199 for the phone and $6,000 for the 2 yr term plan + call charges. Downloads limited to 1Gb per month. This is outrages!!!!!!

You don't need brains to be able to stand in line and spend money. Anyone willing to succumb to those prices in order to brag they have the new iPhone are as dumb as roadkill.

Johnny Gladwell was a fraud. The 'first person in the world' angle was cooked up by PR spin doctors from the agency Publicis. They paid the guy and drummed up media interest for their client the Yellow Pages. The news isn't all bad, sometimes it's just stupid.
