Thingamakit DIY Synthesiser is Horribly, Wonderfully Noisy
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:25 PM on July 7, 2008
Weird... but I kinda want to hear more. That's roughly how I'd describe the sound output of the Thingamakit, a strange "noise monster" DIY synthesiser. I like the fact that it uses some sort of optical feedback: adjusting those tentacles affects how the sounds are generated, which then gets fed back to the LEDs in the tentacles. So it's a pleasingly tactile gizmo, and if you're really a strange-noise-machine-ophile, you'll also appreciate that you can buy it as a kit from maker Bleep Labs. [Bleep Labs via Hackaday]

I've been pondering buying a Thingamagoop for a while now. This looks more fun and I get to build it myself.
Consider it ordered.

they had these as well as some smaller ones for sale at this circuit bending show i went to in manhattan a few months ago. i forget his full name, but there was one guy, bud, who put on an amazing show by using his hands to complete circuits on some seriously hacked up circuit boards. it sort of looked like he was electrocuting himself.

Oh my god! R2D2 is on drugs!!! Poor Star Wars' fans. A lot of them are going to be miserable for the rest of their lives when they see R2 so high.

Can a normal dude put this together? What's the talent level necessary for something like this? I can solder. At some point I did the titan labs GameBoyAdvance light up screen mod (who remembers THAT?), can I handle this?

Looks like a Boss distortion pedal from the 90's.

Neat.
If their international shipping charge was more realistic I'd get one now.

From the looks of it, it only has an output, right? I would love to see this as a guitar pedal.

I'd rather think that there are lightsensors on the device, so adjusting the light that the sensors receive affects how the sounds are generated. I think this is the case because the user sometimes uses his fingers to cover the sensors ;).
