Thermaltake's V1 Cooler is Half Artwork, Half Airy Lungs For Your CPU
Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:22 PM on July 30, 2008
Current gadget design tends to favour minimalism... but that's simply not true for this Thermaltake V1 cooler. Ohoho no. The Thermaltake designer who came up with this must've been an artist in a former career. Just look at it: so detailed, organically-shaped and glittery it's an artwork. And one you'd surely have to show off if you chose to mount it to your CPU. It's got a 12v fan, operates between 1,300 and 2,000 and is around 12.7cm tall and 10.1cm wide and will cost you around US$60. [BBG via DVice]

Lungs? It looks more like gills to me. Especially since, on my monitor at least, it seems to be a nice salmon pink.

Pretty now, but wait till it gets all clogged with dust and you try and clean it.

@Curves: Good ol' canned air should be able to de-crappify it.

@Curves: Yea, no shit...I pulled about 1/2 inch thick "sheet" of dust off of my Zalman...but then again..that was over a 2 year period!

@dandaman247: Ewww, do you vacuum?
@UTnick: "pictures are for the weak" just like "books are for people without their own thoughts"?

@strider_mt2k: Yes, but even a blast from the air can wont get all the ICK off, and this is so pretty it wont ever come back to looking this good.
(Now I am going back to lovingly fondling my new Radio Shack mailer.)

@dandaman247: Sometimes things are inadvertantly funny. And completely culturally parochial.
I can just picture an old Jewish woman complaining to her friend, "Oh, he retired a couple of years ago and now he doesn't do much. I pulled about a 1/2 inch thick "sheet" of dust off my Zalman - but then again - that was over a 2 year period. He just sits and watches television...Oy!"

I actually own one of these coolers, and it is in fact quite good at keeping my cpu cool!
And it is undoubtably the reason I got a computer case with a window :-)

For that price you may as well go $15-20 more and get the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Black Edition and a good 120mm fan to strap to it. It's the best-performing CPU heatsink in existence and, IMO, looks a lot nicer.

It's really pretty, however:
Wouldn't the fan in the middle be pulling air off of one of the fins and blowing that (heated) air over the other fin? It is a beautiful design but is it a functional one?

... just add a beating-heart power supply with vein-like cables and a throbbing grey jelly mass cpu... NICE!

It's not that good... spend the $20 extra and get the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme... Dropped my CPU temps by 20 celsius...

So the fan intakes air thru one set of fins and blows the hot air across the second set affectively making one side of the die hotter- brilliant!

@2001gsr:
Nah, the heatpipes should do enough of a good job distributing the heat evenly. The real problem will be cleaning out the dust 6 months down the road. Unless that fan comes off, you'd have a tough time cleaning between the fins.
