The UBiqWindow: Google Earth Hologram Device You'll Want
Posted by Matt Hickey at 11:30 PM on July 4, 2008
If you can forgive the crap music, you'll just love this video of Google Earth mashed up with a hologram machine. This is real, and I want one very, very badly. By combining a 2D mid-air projection system and motion sensors, the device gives you a gesture-based interface for exploring the world. The term "badass" springs to mind. It looked like he was trying to pan after he zoomed in and couldn't do it. Buggy software?
Even so, very cool!

That was friggin DUMB. All that was was a large touchscreen that was slightly reflective. You could even see the camera tripod in the reflection. I am not impressed...

Why the U2 hate? Of course, it has NOTHING to do with the display . . . U2 3D, while cool, is not a good enough reason for whoever stuck this track in there.

@The Dude: You're wrong! It's the U2 Version of Google Earth. Every different location you go to is a different, awesome U2 song. Furthermore, when you zoom to Ireland, you get a special message of hope from Bono. It also comes in a shiny, black box with red highlights for style.

Now this is a cool gadget. If they can smooth everything out and actually make it transportable, I'll be bloody impressed.

Gesture based systems are very hard to use for me. I have tried one. My fine motor control cannot handle making weird gestures. I love multi touch on the iPhone as it is easy to use and does not require a hell of a lot of fine motor control. Please keep the future involving touch screens and multi touch. Gestures are NOT the way to go

They already use this type of technology is the Army. They have an actual holographic globe that they can zoom into the area or region that they are going into and give great briefings.
But like they already said, this is just a projector that is displaying it on a transparent touch interface, not all that impressive.

My only complaint is that the UI "feels" jerky, in that it is too sensitive to the user's contact. It needs to be "softer" and more fluid, the sensitivity of it needs to be lower.

Now.

Sorry, U2 is still cool. Just because they've hit mainstream doesn't mean they suck.

All "mainstream" means is that a freakn ton of people love your music. U2 rocks. It's like if you're not listening to some obscure unsigned band you're not cool. Screw that! U2 FTW!

"Not that impressive."
Are you people all smoking crack? That was one of the most impressive things I've seen in quite awhile. Or do you all have a rotating, zoomable, map of the world in your house?
Seriously people. He stood there and spun a 3D representation of the planet...with his finger...as it "floated" in front of him. Projected on a screen? So what? Oh yeah, I forgot, you all have motion detectors tied into your clear projection screens that you all use for your uber gaming. Puh-lease. This was awesome.
