The Stadium of the FUTURE...Future...future
Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:00 AM on July 17, 2008
Where will we be going to enjoy our sporting events in the future? What kind of amenities and features will the stadiums have to cater to our needs as fans? PopSci has investigated some of the up-and-coming technologies that we can expect to find in the stadium of tomorrow and compiled all of these innovations into a composite that includes the best design and technology features from a dozen cutting-edge stadium plans.
The Frankenstein stadium of the future is composed of some technology that we have already heard about--like new Cowboys stadium and its gigantic video screen. However, you may not have come across plans for a single-piece steel roof that makes taunts more audible to opposing players in Liverpool F.C.'s new stadium, or the wireless screens set to be built in Oakland's new Cisco field. The interactive screens will allow visitors to order food, pull up stats, and even find the shortest bathroom lines from the comfort of their seat. There are also plans that make stadiums greener, cooler, and more flexible when it comes to configurations. Check out PopSci for more info. [PopSci]

How about if we make a new law: If you once predicted we'd all have flying cars by now, you don't get to make any more predictions.
Who's with me???

1 Billion dollars of advanced stadium technology and no place to park. The cowboy stadium is our future.

The stadium of the future will be fully-immersive virtual reality helmets that will periodically splatter beer on your clothes.

Let me know when these things can seal up and shoot into space. Not that I'm apocalyptic or anything, but I would definitely be a season ticket holder.

This makes me want to drive up 45 just to see it finished. Too bad there is a Wal-Mart in its shadow.

As an avid Sooner fan this stadium concerns me. How in the world is a small state like Oklahoma going to afford this and still pay our players competitive wages?

@Cordfucious: I just moved from Arlington... used to live in a nice apartment... that's now going to either be landscaping or parking for the stadium.

I live within a few miles of the new Cowboys stadium and I will be hating life when the Super Bowl comes to town in 2011. Ugh!

@leonwestbrook: Ironic for a stadium named "Citi Field."
(Or sadly unironic...either way.)

Of course the common fan will be not be able to afford any stadiums of the future.
Soon I will have to offer my first born to see my Mets lose in a shiny corporate field.

I will be there (Cotton Bowl) for the PV/Grambling game and will stay over for the RRSO.

@bung: @unspellable: yeah because I HATE, DESPISE, and utterly DETEST driving on 360, 30 and 183. I love to visit Dallas(Metroplex), but damn the traffic there is BAD. I thought Houston was bad. But there is Blue Mesa's Sunday Buffet to make up for it. (The one at North Park not Plano).

@92BuickLeSabre: Well, the problem for you Okies will likely be solved the same way A&M solves their funding issues (College Station is a freakin' cheap city, btw) - by sending their graduates to the big Texas cities to work and then send back Alumnus contributions.

Apparently, the future is retractable. Pretty soon the entire stadium is going to be retractable so that when a game is not in progress they can just have one huge parking lot in the middle of the city and when the game is over the parking lots retract down into the ground to take you to a secret set of roads designed specifically for stadium traffic.

My idea of the future Stadium is one that is afloat at sea. Instead of taking up expensive real estate it will be constructed in a shipyard and can be floated to any venue in heavily populated areas (i.e. along the coastlines). The playing field would actually be below the water line, near the keel and the stands would conform nicely to the hull of the vessel. An additional benefit is that the field could be easily flooded and drained for indoor marine motorsports. In case of emergency evacuation, there could be lifeboats all around the perimeter. etc.

Honestly, aside from the grand scale of it... The SkyDome (Rogers Centre now...) built in 1989 already has most of these features in one way or another.
Retractable roof? Yep.
Colour changing facade? Well it's currently always one colour, but that's nothing a few LEDs can't change.
A huge video screen.
But still, cool new stadium anyways.

@ninjamurf: nah the f*cker is HUGE. There is this rinky dink walmart RIGHT UNDER IT (literally). No lie.
There is no way in hell Jerry Jones gets over-shadowed in Big D. This stadium makes Reliant look like Reunion Arena.
