The i8510: Samsung's 8 Megapixel S60 Slider
Posted by Sean Fallon at 1:20 AM on July 14, 2008
If the rumour mill is correct, Samsung is cooking up a new Symbian S60 slider dubbed the i8510 with some serious specs under the hood--including an 8 megapixel camera. The full list of specs are impressive, and would definitely pose a threat to the upcoming Nokia N96 if it is the real deal.
The full list of specs are as follows:
•2.8-inch QVGA (240×320 pixels), 16m colors
•8 megapixel camera with auto-focus, xenon flash and 120 fps video recording
•UMTS with HSDPA support, WiFi, GPS, TV out, DivX support, dedicated 3D graphics chip
•Optical mouse (same as i780 and i900 Omnia)
•200 mAh battery
•106.5×53.9×16.9 mm metal case
•16 GB internal memory (possibly an 8 GB version as well)
Impressive. Conflicting reports have the i8510 running either Feature Pack 1 or 2 and there is no word on whether we are talking tri-band or quad-band GSM here. However, as with any rumour, we will just have to wait and see what holds true. [Forum2 via Estato via IntoMobile via BGR]

@midtoad:
That doesn't really make much sense, I don't see what the relation between the camera's megapixel count and the pixels on the screen have in common.
The pictures are meant to be viewed on a pc or connected to a tv; and/or printed. The screen on the phone acts the same as any screen on any digital camera, i.e. giving you an idea of what the picture will look like in big and the ability to zoom in to view certain parts in detail.
And 800x480 on such a small screen would be totally useless anyway..

@midtoad: Yeah I think they should all move towards VGA now.

Are they brain-dead? They put a 4000x2000 (approximately) camera lens in the unit and give you a 320x240 screen to view the pictures with? 640x480 VGA should be the minimum resolution installed on this device, and 800x480 would be better.

@shinchan:
800x480 isn't totaly useless on that size screen, rather it's about 250ppi.
320x240 is around 100.
to note something else.
200mah @ 3.7 volts is .7 watt hours... that's about 1/4 of capacity th at would be needed to be minimally acceptable on a device with these specs somewhere between 900-1500 seems more likely. the original post says 1200.

this is why iPhone does so well...every week I see a new samsung phone...if they would take there money and stop making hundreds of phones and just make 1-3 super phones then things would just get better...apple has one phone blackberry has 3 phones other companies have 10+ and what companies have most market share?? the ones with fewer phones.

@mricyfire:
The iPhone does so well?
Who has most market share?
Nokia: ~40%
Samsung: 14%
Motorola: 14%
SE: 9%
LG: 7%
Yup, the companys with the least mobiles DEFINATELY have the most market share.
Cause we all know that Nokia and Samsung only have a few models. Right? RIGHT!?

@mricyfire: But Samsung is after Nokia marketshare not Apple or Blackberry and Nokia Europe has 107 phones as current models on their European website. And Nokia has the biggest marketshare, it was 40% in 2007.

200mAh??? That is tiny - it must be a typo of >1200mAh, more likely 2000mAh.

What are you talking about. Get your facts straight.
World Wide Market Share for Mobile Phones:
#1 Nokia (40%)
#2 Samsung (14%)
#3 Motorolla (14%)
#4 Sony Ericsson (9%)
#5 LG (7%)
#6 Other (includes Apple, RIM, etc.) (18%)
So your logic fails miserably and conflicts with facts.

Does it have a glass lens? The biggest problem I've seen with most cellphone cameras is the plastic lenses they use create horrible looking images. The size of decent lenses/sensors they have in the Canon Elphs would seemingly make for an exceptional and useful cameraphone.
Perhaps they are worried that people don't want a retracting lens on their phone though - I guess it would effect the potential lifespan of the camera - but does anyone really keep the same cellphone for more than 2-3 years these days anyway?
