Tenori-On Inspired PacklSound1 iPhone App Coming Soon, But Not Soon Enough
Posted by Jack Loftus at 2:07 AM on July 27, 2008
The Tenori-On is the zany Yamaha touch-based musical sequencer that caught our eye earlier this year, but this cool PacklSound1 iPhone app could very well be the portable version that puts us over the edge. It's a simpler version of the original US$1,200 Tenori-On box, but that didn't stop the designer from laying down a quick, catchy beat. Seeing it in action, makes me want it right now:
And here's the original video demonstrating Tenori-On's seemingly infinite capabilities:

If you're going to make a video advertising a sequencer or what have you, for the love of our sweet, gentle Christ can you please do so with a sense of timing? I spent the whole video agonizing over how off-time it was.
That said, and the negative part out of the way, it does look pretty much like a lot of fun. I know I'd kill time waiting for a bus playing this thing.

@bosskev: Based on your statement, it appears that we can safely equate the application to be the aural equivalent of "greater-than 1" monkey all the way to infinity-monkeys. Since the known volume that a barrel can hold is within this range, it follows that this application is equivalent to at least one barrel of monkeys, which is good enough for me.

@kaneshadow: True. That's why the thrill of illegally downloading fancy music software wears off pretty quickly too, because then you're sitting there, face to face with the fact that you've got no skills and no excuses. The other side of the coin is, I once saw a great musician make compelling music with a freaking piece of paper.

Hmm. Sounds like there's a little inconsistent latency in the note/sample playback. Hope that gets solved, it messes up the rythm now and then.

@banmojo: Ten minutes? Seems generous, maybe two minutes for me.
And, as kaneshadow suggests, the universally missing feature of apps like this is talent. To me, the demo in this video seems a wee bit too much like the aural equivalent of what you might get from infinite monkeys on typewriters--only in this case it's only the one monkey.

How much will this cost? It would have to be free for me to download it.

looks semi interesting - something I'd play with for 10 minutes then hardly ever again. Maybe musicians would have more fun with it but I'd guess musicians would have more tangible, robust instruments to play with.

Do you have to be completely tone deaf to be able to enjoy this? That was... irritating.

@jkr2:
I think that it would be pretty hard for Yamaha to press legal action as there are many step sequencers out there today that have that look, like the Monome for one.

Wow, this is really great!!! Now all it needs is a proper BPM setting and it's good to go!

As both a gadget whore and a fan of electronic music, this stuff always gets me really excited, but what they don't write on the box is "some talent required- individual results may vary"

And how quick will it kill your battery?
I have trouble making it 18 hours without running apps like this which must be hell on the processor.

Nice....So when that UFO visits my bedroom window, I can use my iPhone and this program to communicate with it. Tell those sluts to stop abducting me and anal probing me.

@RigorMortis:
I agree. How can a 16-beat loop sound SO out-of-whack? It's not like those plinkity-plink sounds aren't irritating enough...

this would be fun for the bus to/from work with some headphones, but i went to a show where one of the opening acts was a guy with the original sequencer above and it really pissed me off...not so much the music, but the 'dj' if that's what you call people who use this thing. it's like the advent of blogs, but for music. before, you had to know at least a little bit to have a website to voice your opinion on the net, but now every asshole's got a blog. with this, every asshole's got a record deal with little-to-no real skill.

I've been fiddling with the BeatMaker iPhone app from Intua, which features a sequencer that you can manipulate by touch: [www.intua.net]
It's actually a lot of fun! You can check out the complete capabilities in the online user manual: [www.intua.net]
