Super-Sleek Aurora Open Source DJ Mixer Can Be Built From a Kit
Posted by John Mahoney at 8:00 AM on July 10, 2008
We love open source hardware, especially when it can throw some MIDI flange and fade into your party like the Aurora--a dual-channel, USB-powered DJ mixer. All the schematics, bills of materials and source code can be nabbed for free online, or you can have one built and shipped. And it can pull off a pretty mean LED lightshow...
Here the ump-shh ump-shh is dished out by Ableton Live, with effects being controlled by the Aurora.

Simulacrum. This is to mixers what CD scratching was to records.

Gerhard Behles and Bernd Roggendorf still preform.
It's worth seeing them or Monolake in concert, they play small venues.
They love to show what their software can do, with or with out external equipment.

Just remember that pretty lights and outstanding design can never match the Borg-like looks and craptacular performance of a Realistic mixer.
Full disclosure: I used to manage micro radio stations, and we primarily used Radio Shack mixer boards, and they were generally quite good, despite my worthless attempt at humor. Still, this mixer board looks like a lot of fun for DJ work, although I admit I never did find the 'fully assembled' order form and price on the site.

Looks matter. This looks super-cool. Just gotta make it sound right. Miles Davis said: "If you want to sound good you have to look good!"

@altus:
What ultimately matters is whats coming out of the speakers and into my audiophile DJ ears. Looks are... just looks.
However, nothing very great can come out of some simpleton ableton controlling USB mixer. It will just be, well, simple.
Crossfade a track and throw some flange or something on there. Not too revolutionary. However the open source nature, might be able to produce something special.

This is a neat project. I like the ambient lighting FX and the lit knobs.
If it had audio I/O, or even just 4 channels out (main and cue mix) it would be ideal.

My favorite USB MIDI mixer is a Vestax VCI-100:

in action after I unboxed it:

Pros: Can mix/scratch any sound on your computer + impressive range of modulation.
Cons: Still ain't feeling like vinyl!

The software side of this baby is not exactly streamline, but I do drool for this. I wish they at least sold the PCB on its own.

@johnnyabnormal: Very nice little demo - how would you say it compares to other USB mixers though?

@ヨシダさん 25: It's hard to compare, since I don't really know of a device exactly like it. More than anything, I wanted the ability to do quick cuts with no latency, which you can see it definitely delivers. Vestax is pretty well known for that style too, so that was also a reason I invested in it. If I were to improve it? Make the platters spin & add a sensor that can pick up friction for more scratch tricks. It would be nice if it worked inside Logic Pro 8. It uses Traktor Dj Studio 3 software.

Not only is it cool and useful, but they made it look awesome too.
@Monty: I still get customers looking for parts to maintain their Rad Schmack mixers.
You aren't kidding. They are still quite popular with the analog crowd.
