Super Monkey Ball for iPhone Lightning Review: Addictive, Hard as Hell
Posted by John Mahoney at 4:45 AM on July 11, 2008

The App: Super Monkey Ball, probably the biggest game in the App Store today, mates the longstanding franchise's primate-in-a-bubble rolling to the iPhone's accelerometer interface.
The Price: US$9.99
Verdict: Simple, addictive fun, but a bit frustrating. If you're used to Monkey Ball's motion-sickness-inducing control setup (and you don't mind looking like a jackass on the subway) you'll have a blast. You can roll your way through 5 worlds of 11 stages each on two difficulty levels which are unlocked linearly. You've got your pick of four monkeys of varying ages and genders to put in the ball, but after that, it's a whole lot of rolling to the goal without falling off the edge.
But get ready to fall off the edge. A lot. The accelerometer control scheme does get better as you get used to it, but after about 30 minutes of play I was still having a lot of trouble finding the neutral point. But if nothing else, the graphics are definitely on the high-end for a mobile phone game, which sets the tone nicely for the iPhone as a serious gaming platform. [Super Monkey Ball]

The Jr. High humor magnet is strong with this one.
"Damn it, Beavis - stop playing with my super hard super monkey ball."
Did I say it would actually be funny? No, I didn't.

Actually it freezes al the time. You can't play it in a reclining chair. They have the accelerometer controls wrong and the screen can't be read..... This is a quick and sloppy port. Nothing to brag about unfortunately.

it SUPER hard to play. i kept falling off. the accelerometer is extremely sensitive to every little motion. i hope i get better since i payed $10 for it lol

But how long until we get a REALLY fun game -- like periodic table of the elements flash cards!

can we get a screenshot? Also, is there a way to calibrate the accelerometer and tilt sensors so that you dont have to hold it perfectly flat like a tool?

I've never played it, is it like Sonic + Marble Madness?

I still have 1 & 2 for my GameCube. Great games, my nieces and nephew like them too.

I was pretty sure when you buy something on iTunes, it is linked to your account, but you can only have 5 computers authorized to your account at one time. And because syncing stuff from one computer wipes of whatever is on the iPod/iPhone already, it prevents hot-swapping/merging between multiple computers.

Stupid question here:
I suppose it is $9.99 for each iphone/ipod touch, even I have multiple iphones/ipod touch sync to the same mac/pc?

If you've ever played the Gameboy Advance version aka SMB Jr. That shit is hard as fuck.

forget about looking like a jackass while playing this on the subway. due to the acceleration of the subway itself, this and any other accelerometer based game would be completely unplayable. that would be the same situation in a car as well. i'll pass....

It's not hard by choice. We actually compared it to the Gameboy. No comparison. They got the motion wrong. Note that all these games work just fine on a train. Except in extreme circumstances. Most of the time they are not doing hard core stop-and-go. Especially SMB, shich basically sues motion like a joystick. The wrong way.

Sorry for the double post- but I was just thinking that if perhaps a small developer or say an individual that's a talented programmer develops an application that becomes a 'must have' and the individual decides to charge only $1 for it but has the potential to reach 10 million owners- that alone would make him $7 million for his efforts if all bought it.
*Note to self: Learn C/C++ or whatever programming language is used. And come up with a killer idea!

Well apparently SMB has sold 3,200+ copies today- that's before the official launch of the 3G iPhone and App store. Just going by those numbers alone would see SEGA pull in over $8 million if the sales stayed the same over the course of the year and taking into account Apple's 30% cut. I predict the App store will be very profitable for developers!

Maybe they will release a patch? (will there be updates for the Applications from the app store?) A patch that will offer settings with options such as having the neutral point at a 20 degree angle?
Still looks like a great game for a phone. But a bit overpriced. Maybe $5. It is a cellphone game (albeit a good looking, fully functional, cellphone game) Think of how many games you could buy with a $20 gift card. [4]
Anyway, will the prices be the same in Canada? And will most of the region free content be available in Canada?

@jimbowyer: Objective-C I believe, and XCode. (I really want to get a bigger hard drive for my laptop and install OSx86 for the SDK, or Apple should make it for Windows, though I could see how hard that might be)

@meggman: Uhh, acceleration would only happen if you were speeding up. Playing on the highway would be fine. Or on the subway between stops. You could do a little "compensation" action too, like you do with a coffee mug.

A MB game with WIDER COURSES that's more about reaching the finish line quickly and less about struggling not to fall off wire-thin mazes would be a welcome change.

@mattw6789:
Yeah, agree on the hard part. Cute and simple games shouldn't be this hard to control. I feel like I'm playing a drinking game :) It does look sweet though, hopefully I'll spend some more time figuring it out and not waste the $9+ I spent.

@altus:
Uhm, excuse me? This is definitely something to brag about. My initial reaction to the sensitive controls was akin to that of most people; "crap, I payed 10 bucks for this and cant play it". Well, I went on to play for about 2 hours straight and I got used to it and loved it. This is because they designed the game for people who need to learn the motion. They start with large bumpers to protect you from falling, which gradually get smaller and easier to fall over, until you've gotten experience and they are taken away altogether.
Sure you can't play in a relcining char, but thats not exactly the end of the world. I've rode a bus before by the way, and it shouldn't be a problem. If you sit in a front or back facing seat then you shouldn't move enough to affect the game, and if you're in a side facing seat, you'll slide but you won't tip over.

hint : play with your hands on a table. With normal hands, you'll be just at the neutral point ! Without this trick, it is almost impossible to go beyond the level 7.
