Sprint and SK Telecom in Talks to Co-Develop Awesome Phones
SK Telecom is South Korea's largest mobile phone carrier, but they're definitely interested in a U.S. presence--it was a partner in Helio (before it got sold), and had a rejected US$5 billion investment offer to Sprint last fall. While CNBC originally reported they were now in talks to buy Sprint, the WSJ says the two are actually talking about a partnership to co-develop phones and services, since they both run on CDMA. Awesome Korean phones and services on Sprint? Yes please. Sprint could definitely use the boost. But will the Ocean 2 live again? [WSJ]

Great news maybe we can get some of the awesome phones SK has making sprint the carrier with some of the best phones they sure need it even though they have been improving lately with the instinct, curve, treo 800w, the upcoming touch diamond and raphael

Could you do a feature on some of the phones of South Korea and Japan, it'd be really interesting to see the technologies, standards and networks they have.
Pretty please :D

@Carmen: Does that even make sense? (God, I hope that doesn't make sense.)
I do, however, appreciate the "phone as GoBot" look though.

I thought we had that post on keeping thing oh idk related to the topic just a little bit ago. Seems like no one cares already.
Anyhoo, cool and exciting news. If anything maybe it'll spark Verizon to look into it too, competition in the marketplace = good thing.

In the agreement, SK only has to provide those korean girls they used to sell their phones. they should under no circumstances supply any actual phones, which are ugly.
cos i say so.

I had that phone on the right when I lived in Korea last year. It was a total piece of crap. The internet is nice and fast though, once you learn to read Korean.

The Korean phones ARE sweet, but some are pretty bulky. Still sweet, nonetheless.

I really hope Sprint doesn't force me to buy twisty screen phones like they were forcing everyone to buy a flip phone for a while there.
...or a HTC Touch for a while there
...or a Samsung Instinct
wait I see a trend

Why would they want to get involved in a business deal with a company that likely won't even exist in a few years? Sprint sux!!!

By the way...korean phones are anything but bulky. Yes some of them are bulky but majority of them are alot slimmer than anything u can find in the US market.

Well, I live in Korea now. I have to say, tech here is pretty advanced. They have all the high tech but poor UI and software to go along with it. Here are some tech info:
Most carriers in Korea are now 3.5+G, meaning you can download 4 gigs in less than 1 min (this was advertised widely a year ago)
Video conferencing and high mpix photo is the norm
Most phones also are DMV ready (mobile TV) and also include GPS
I find it strange that bluetooth is not standard here
virtual voicemail has been around as long as I can remember
Some phones have wibro (korean version of wimax).
Those are the only features I can think of that really stands out.
