Sony Putting the PS3 Xross Media Bar Into Vaio FW Laptops
Posted by Sean Fallon at 3:58 AM on July 19, 2008
The PS3 may be having its ups and downs, but one thing is for certain--Sony is loving the Xross Media Bar. They put it in some of their Bravia TVs, the PSP, some Cybershot cameras and now they are planning to integrate the interface into their new Vaio FW series laptops. Naturally, the goal here is to provide synergy between all sorts of devices to create that "digital living room" type experience that is all the rage these days. [Tech Radar]

I do love XMB as well. It's simple, elegant, and functional. I love that my PSP and PS3 have the same design; they flow into each other which is great.
MS should tie the Zune, Xbox, and Windows under a theme as well and make them talk to each other to the extent the PSP/PS3 do.

Want!!! I really wish someone would release an open source XMB-like Linux shell that could be integrated into a lightweight version of Linux specifically for media and internet use... It would transform any capable computer into a perfect media center. Plus, you could fully customize it. If I had any knowledge of making Linux GUIs and building Linux distros, I would definitely try to make this. Alas, I doubt anyone will ever try...

I shoot on an HDR-FX1 and a HDR-HC1. I have a PS3, Sony surround sound and a 42" Bravia. I love Sony.
That being said, I will never use anything with Windows, ever. No BSOD for me thank you.

XMB on Viao FW, which means it will be software-based and will work on any Vaio is my guess. Can't wait to put this on my Vaio AR~

Wow that's awesome. How sweet would a Vaio tablet with XMB be? Sony make that happen. AND lower the damn prices on your lovely computers!

I don't get it. It's identical to the Windows Media Center interface that came out in 2002, except Media Center goes up & down and THEN left & right, and the XMB goes left & right and THEN up & down.

It's more correct to state the FW supports DLNA via the new "VAIO Media Plus". The XMB is 'just' the interface part of VAIO Media Plus. But it's definitely a step up from the old/current "VAIO Media".
That being said, pretty much every DLNA supporting VAIO would be able to run VAIO Media Plus, and thus interact with the household PS3 or Bravia. But if I'm not mistaken, there are no plans to release VAIO Media Plus as a stand alone software package or as an upgrade to the current generation VAIO's with VAIO Media. (Which is a shame really.)
Yes the XMB might be pretty similar to Media Center, the XBOX 360 UI/Media Center or even Apple Front Row in terms of functionality. But I still find it's one of the better/best UI experiences out there for accessing and sharing photos and music. Even my mom knows how to use it. :P
It's also pretty fast. I tried out the beta build a couple of months ago. (Sharing files between an SZ, a Japanese Bravia and a PS3.) Almost no hiccups even though it was running over a shabby wifi network.

I disagree with calling it the "PS3 Xross Media Bar"
The PSP had it a full two years before the PS3 came out...

@Noobs-R-Us: I love it on the PSP, but I don't think it's necessary on a PS3. This looks like an alternative to Windows Media Center which isn't half bad.
