Sony Pulls PS3 2.40 Update To Fix Bricking Issues
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:52 AM on July 3, 2008
Sony's just pulled the 2.40 PS3 firmware update due to reports of it bricking and causing various other problems. If you're unlucky enough to already have installed it and ran into issues, Kotaku has a few solutions up. If not, just hold off until the fixed release is available soon. [Kotaku]
Update: Just confirmed it on our own PS3, which we haven't updated yet. It's not prompting us for 2.40.

@genterara: You sure miss out on a lot, then.
I've never had problems with any of the new updates for any of those products listed (and adding the iPhone).
@EnzoFX: I had custom themes (from the PS Store) set for all my accounts but whenever I updated it had just set them all back to default.
I'm really interested to see what they say exactly caused the problem.

Thats why I never install any update or new version on the first run.
Valid for Windows, PS3, iPod, Firefox (Downloaded it to help the record, but didnt install)

Man, I learned my lesson with early application of PS3 firmware back when a couple of them broke MP4 streaming. Not going to be an early firmware adopter again!

@fastm3driver:
People like you are idiots. Get off the internet.
I'm sick of this fail crap. I wouldn't be surprised if they were all "lol tomato fail" when the FDA pulled them. I've been looking around, and I've only found about threeish people saying that theirs was bricked. My guess is they were worried by initial reports, so rather than run the risk they pulled it.

I was just about to update too..
and of course they do testings, it's why it's taken so long to come into fruition, but there's always unexpected bugs.
Maybe the trophy issue is because that friend hasn't updated? Dunno. I did read a recommendation that ppl should enable the default theme before updating, custom ones may cause issues.

Didn't they just have to update the PSP verion from 4.00 to 4.01 because of bugs? Don't they do any testing?

Which begs the question... what is on these PS3's to cause the brickage?
People of all PS3 "types" have installed it just fine so I have to assume ANY brand new PS3 out of the box wont have an issue, so what's causing it? We'll porbably never find out.

It didn't kill my ps3 (yet) although I can't compare trophies with friends. Even though they have some trophies when I check their profile it says they don't.
Don't know whats going on there.

Yeah mine has been working fine as well, I downloaded it at around midnight. I have one of the original 60 gig PS3's though, maybe it's the newer models that are freezing up?

That;s a real shame. Couldn't they just release a quick 2.41 update FW update?
They did the same when the big 4.0 FW for PSP dropped. Then a few days later 4.01 came out. Fixed bugs and whatnot.
Definitely, not good for their image...and Sony needs all the good image they can get.

This is why I never install Sony updates until they have been out for a couple of weeks. Half of them break something that was previously working. Talk around the net so far is that this update makes the 2.20 debacle look like nothing.

mine worked too, without a hitch, although it won't boot or even power up now. just kidding, no problems here.

I'd be pissed though if I had to wait while it was down, I use it to stream media and I'm sure all the peeps having 4th of July parties and whatnot are just f-ing thrilled. Dang!!!!!

I take back what I said about not being able to see my friends trophies. For what ever reason it doesn't auto sync with you online profile. While I was on the phone I ask a friend to compare his trophies with mine which was the first time today he tried a compare with someone.
He's ps3 said it sync'd and it updated his trophy profile on my end to show his awards.
I'm a little shocked there isn't more patchs to be released with 2.40 to add trophies. I can wait a little longer I suppose.

From the playstation blog
As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

Well, I guess I should thank the 2.20 bricking for getting me into the habit of waiting to install future updates. You know, I was starting to think I was being a bit paranoid, but there you go. I hope Sony fixes the bugs soon. I'm itching to get some trophies for MGS4.

They don't make press releases for a small number of incidents...I wish some company would just be honest and give an idea of the numbers? What percentage or total number of users do they estimate are having issues? Approximately how many so far have complained of an issue? Something other than a "few incidents" that are causing problems.

No problems here. Does it brick right when installed? Or when playing certain games? So far I've only played Oblivion after installing. Also disappointed at the lack of updates to add trophies to games... I wonder how many games that have already been released will actually get them.

It doesn't brick it. Not by any definition of "brick" that I'm familiar with. The PS3 can be fixed by the user. There are repeated reports on the PS3 forums that formatting the PS3 hard drive fixes the problem. The firmware is NOT stored on the hard drive, but apparently some loading files the XMB uses on boot are stored on the hard drive.

@pepticburrito: But when you hurl your PS3 into the wall in frustration, that does brick the unit.
The problem with reformatting your drive is that you've just reformatted your drive - losing all the data. Including the game data. I know that Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid 4 are fun games and all, but do you really want to have to go through the game again because Sony f*cked up?

Yeah, just backup.
Update installers should really ask if you'd like to perform a backup before upgrading. Even if the backup just quickly copies your savegames to a seperate partition or USB connected drive, they'd be one step ahead.
Regardless, this was a pretty major upgrade and it sounds like for a very large percentage of folks, everything was fine.

do the smart thing, and backup your system to a USB drive BEFORE you update your firmware. HISTORY

One things I noticed as well.
Once you earn a trophy in a game, it WILL NOT sync up with your profile and add them to your gamercard UNTIL you go to the trophies section of the XMB to refresh your trophies that you just earned from a game.
So viewing someone's gamercard is not a LIVE REPRESENTATION of the trophies people are earning. If I am playing a game for 2 hours and I earn 6 trophies, someone who checks my profile during my 2 hour gaming stint won't see that I just earn those trophies till I refresh my trophy list in the XMB.

I downloaded the upgrade at 1230 am when it first came out.
Since then, I am already level 2 and have about 12 trophies.

man thats BS - they bricked mine a while back with another update and there were a TON of people on sony's own message board with the same problem - they need to learn how to make firmware updates that dont brick - they didn't offer a patch either - they had me send the whole unit back for warranty repair!

I cannot believe the statement issued by Sony. Update 2.2 took away existing functionality (streaming mp4) for a lot of users and even after so many had complained, sony refused to acknowledge it as an issue. Now, update 2.4 bricks a few PS3s and they issue an apology statement and pull off the firmware. What the heck is up with that?

if your ps3 does get bricked or 'unuseable', shouldnt sony replace it? (since it is they're fault)
BTW im running the first generation 60GB and it works fine, i think its the newer generation that got screwed over.
