Sony Patent Hints at PlayStation Phone, Possible Mystery Device?
Posted by Benny Goldman at 9:01 AM on July 1, 2008
The prospect of a PSP phone looks even more likely now that we've seen Sony's patent for a touchscreen handheld. The patent describes a device with "digital tactile pixels" that respond to touch and give feedback via vibration. This patent was submitted by Sony Computer Entertainment, the group behind PlayStation, and not Ericsson, like the last alleged PSP phone patent. The mystery device is covered to play games and music and browse the web, but also make phone calls, so what else could it be? [patent via Tech Digest]

If they make a mystery device phone out of the PSP, that thing is going to FLOP just like that pile of shit mylo 2, which is basically a PSP with a KB and NO gaming personality. I mean really, where is your snatch?

now watch as it just ends up being last-minute legality checks to bring the xperia here.
speaking of which, a phone/playstation combo would be best if based off of the xperia.

Hmmmm Ngage anyone? This looks like a terrible idea; A psp as a phone wold just be huge and awkward. Although phones are fine for tetris, brick breaker, etc... I like to keep my gaming platforms and phones separate.

I eagerly await news of its many arbitrary limits and lock-outs that get worked around causing Sony to go to war with enthusiasts of it's products.
Again.

It's very possible as an adjunct to the PSP core gaming systems that are just now being realized for their power. The PSP consistently sells highest in Japan every week compared to any other console and it's only the bad games that are killing it currently but if the Japanese customers are any marker, it may make sense to introduce a phone/psp combo though I doubt that it would be anything more than a fringe product to the core line-up.
PSP is only on year 3 and I've heard repeatedly that it will be given a 10 yr life cycle.

Sony, whatever you do, PLZ don't drop the PSP controller. Sure make it touch screen, but leave us the analog stick (or possibly 2?) and the buttons.

FYI - This article refers to a patent APPLICATION that has recently been published. This is not an issued patent. The Giz and others confuse the two relatively frequently.
Here's how to tell the difference:
Check the USPTO link, it refers to the "Patent Application" database. Another hint that this isn't an issued patent is that it lists a Patent Appl. No. at the top and not United States Patent No.

You touch the screen. The tactile pixels are on the perimeter of the screen. Then, what are tactile pixels for?
