Sony HQ Shows Off 3D Fish Footage on 200-inch Mystery Display
Posted by Adam Frucci at 12:41 AM on July 23, 2008
Apparently, the new attraction at Sony's Tokyo headquarters is a gigantic 200-inch display showing HD underwater footage in 3D. The footage was shot by divers in the Okanawa aquarium with a couple of high-end Sony cameras, but what we're really interested in is that display. What is it?
There's not much info that we can find online, but it's almost definitely not some new 200-inch TV. That sort of thing would have been wheeled out at CES to show Panasonic what's up. Perhaps it's a custom job with two panels stitched together? A projection? Maybe it's just a really fancy aquarium that's gussied up to look like a display? I'm not sure, but from the photos it looks very big and very nice. Anyone have the goods? Inquiring minds want to know. [New Launches]

It's a PSP, and those are super shrunken children. Anybody see Rick Moranis around?

That's a nice display. wonder if they are layering the lcd's or flickering them for the 3d effect. saw a display at CES 2 years go that had a 3d lcd. It had I think 3 panels stacked and with a refraction lens on the front to get the 3d effect.

An aquarium would look great om a projection screen.

The mystery is how those fish survived to be *on* that screen. They look so edible.

It IS an aquarium.
Sony Engineers had to produce some results, fast. They go to the pub, hit the sake, and come up with this hair-brained scheme to build a 200 inch aquarium that looks like a TV, and put big fish in it.
Kinda like the Sgt. Bilko movie, but without the hover tank.

They don't have glasses, (that I can see), so if this is stereo, it must be auto stereo, in which case they're standing too close for the effect. It wouldn't be unusual for this to be a rear projected, polarized stereo display, (which the viewers shown aren't seeing) but, unless it was taken through a polarized lens, the still images would show the two views at once. There are some inconsistencies in the impression that this is stereo.

its deff. just rear projection... see the bulbs brightness in the bottom center of the picture and the opaqueness on the bottom left of the screen... just sony showing off most likely nothing.. or a new projector... in either case... move along now children... nothing to see here... although... for everyone's information... the real 200-inch tv... in on my room wall.. i carved into the wall so it would sit flush with the wall.. so if you would like to see... tour tickets start at 50 bucks...

Considering that it's Sony, it's probably their 4K cinema projector being used as a rear-projection display.

it looks like a projection with a crazy frame to make it look like a tv screen.

I would love to be able to actually see this in action, as opposed to images (in person I mean)
and it makes me wish I could visit the aquarium in okinawa... that place is freakin' awesome

If that is an aquarium instead of a display, Sony has some mad gene splicing skills. That species of fish is normally a foot or so long. It's either a very cool display or "Sony invents giant fish". Geoff

OkInawa - Not Okanawa, and yes, it is awesome. You can loose yourself for hours staring at it.

That would probably make a good screen saver.
