Sony E3 Liveblog

We're here at Sony's E3 press event, preparing for the onslaught of hardware and software news they've got planned for today. Could there be a price cut? A new WiiMote-like peripheral? Just new games? Just old games? Whatever it is, it's going to be shown on the giant stage full of Sony's TVs. It's about to start, so keep refreshing so you can see the exciting Sony-ness. Sony-osity. Sony-manium. Update: It's started!

11:32: Sony's pumping electronic music between audio feeds of the six games people are playing on stage. Metal Gear Solid 4, Pixeljunk Eden, GT5 Prologue, GRAW2, Ecochrome and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
11:33: What could Sony pull out to top Wii Music? It's going to be pretty difficult, if you know what I mean. Seriously, it's the epitome of gaming and developer should just go home at this point.
11:35: It's starting! A bunch of Sony PlayStation shapes are scrolling across the six screens.
11:37: The excitement level is definitely higher than Nintendo's which was laid back and totally casual-oriented.
11:38: The stage is definitely very well designed. Very pretty. Jack Tretton, Emperor of Sony, is coming on stage.
11:39: Jack is talking about all the stars that have been on this stage, including Jack Bauer and Jack Pallance. And then he made a crack about how Jack Pallance is dead, followed by slight shock and boos from the crowd.
11:41: It was 10 years ago that Sony introduced the PlayStation, and they're taking the crowd on a journey through the PlayStation brand--including all the more notable games.
11:43: Now Sony is talking about other features, like videos and photos, plus the @home research program that helps to cure diseases.
11:44: They're talking about how the Blu-ray won the next-gen disc format war against the HD DVD. And part of that is because of the PS3. A big part.
11:45: Grand Theft Auto 4, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue are three examples of great games (sequels) on the platform, says Jack.
11:47: A five second video just went up showing an image of the PS3.
11:48: Jack Tretton is much better this year than last, where he was fairly awkward. He played off his awkwardness well this time.
11:48: Here comes Resistance 2 being demoed in real time.
11:48: There's a gigantic ugly alien stomping around a city like the Cloverfield monster.
11:50: It's definitely very cinematic, but the environment graphics don't seem all THAT fantastic. Definitely a good looking game though.
11:52: The game is set in Chicago in the 1950s.
11:53: There's eight-player online co-op and 60 player online-multiplayer.
11:55: They're playing a trailer with a Kennedy-esque president making a speech about how aliens are winning the war. Kotaku will have more on this later.
11:56: Next up is Little Big Planet. It's a game with pretty large social networking and user-created content.
11:58: Jack's using Little Big Planet to talk about the business updates. Very clever. Using the little guy (Sack Boy) to illustrate what would otherwise be Powerpoint slides. Woo!
11:59: A lot of $29 discount titles are announced as well.
12:02: Little Big Planet is coming October 2008.
12:02: Hats off to Sony for making a dry business presentation interesting with Little Big Planet.
12:03: Now, the PlayStation 2.
12:03: There are still 130 titles coming to the old system, in case you still haven't updated to a next-gen system yet.
12:06: Buzz, the quiz show, is coming to PS2 and PS3.
12:06: Singstar, the karaoke game, is still going strong on the PS2.
12:07: Later this year, a Lego Batman PS2 bundle will be $149 and also include a DC movie DVD.
12:08: Next up, the PlayStation Network. All PlayStation users will have a single sign-on over PC, PS3 and PSP.
12:09: Jack is talking about the amount of downloads on the PSN, which is up to 180 million pieces of content downloaded since Nov. 2006.
12:11: New game announcement: Rachet & Clank Future: Quest For Booty. It's a shorter game with a lower price, and was rumoured before. It's a continuation of the Rachet & Clank game that's already out now.
12:12: It's darker than the original R&C, and he's got a new wrench tool.
12:13: $14.99 later this summer. See Kotaku for more.
12:13: Here's a dig at Xbox Live Arcade: "We're not interested in filling up our store with games nobody wants to play just so we can say we have more games."
12:14: And now a montage of upcoming PlayStation Network games. Hit up Kotaku for details on these.
12:15: A bunch of car TV content is coming to Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in October, including car shows like Top Gear and various Japanese racing events.
12:20: Now, PlayStation Home. Jack assures people that their patience will be rewarded when Home finally expands to wide beta.
12:21: He's talking about various game companies and their promise to provide content for PlayStation Home and utilise it in their games.
12:22: They're showing a bunch of game spaces like Warhawk and Resistance 2, which are basically like command-rooms that you can view some decorations based on the game and even launch it.
12:23: The PlayStation Network video network will have various content providers like MGM, Warner, and a bunch of others (including Sony Pictures.) Both standard def and high def TV, and pricing will be $2.99-$5.99 for rentals and $9.99-$14.99 for purchases. We've posted on Sony's PSN video before, but the pricing seems new. Once you purchase it for the PS3, you can load it on your PSP as well.
12:25: Eric Lempel of Sony is showing how the video store will work. It's located inside the PSN store now and looks pretty much like a video store would.
12:26: Downloading an SD movie takes an hour to get a two-hour movie, but you can start watching it after you've downloaded about a minute's worth.
12:28: HD rentals are more expensive (usually about $5.99).
12:28: There are two ways to get content onto the PSP. One way is going through the PS3 and transferring via USB cable, another is through the PC.
12:30: The video service is going up tonight, July 15.
12:30: Rachel & Clank Size Matters Entertainment Pack is coming soon at $199, with a Memory Stick and National Treasure 2.
12:33: Now, they're showing off a Resistance game for the PSP. It's called Resistance Retribution.
12:35: And now a highlights reel of PSP games. Hit Kotaku if you want a list of them.
12:37: Jack is talking about Google, with uploading clips onto YouTube automatically (only in some games).
12:40: Jim Lee, executive creator of DC Universe Online, is coming on stage. He's doing some one-arm pushups. Nice!
12:42: They've been working for three years building DC Universe Online, which includes Superman and BATMAN, of course.
12:42: You can HELP Batman, but not BE Batman. You can also be a villain and be beat up by Batman too.
12:46: Price drop! 80GB PS3 goes to $399 later this year. It's got the same functionality as the 40GB one now, but with a larger hard drive.
12:50: Sony's showing a montage of developers talking about how powerful the console is and how they're getting used to programming for it.
12:53: Another montage of upcoming and already-released PS3 games.
12:56: Yes, another montage is coming. This time including God Of War 3.
12:58: And Infamous, where you play a good or bad superhero.
12:59: Andy Beaudoin from Zipper Interactive is up on stage, talking about an as-of-yet unannounced multiplayer game. Wait, it's called MAG (Massive Action Game). Battles of up to 256 players at a time.
It's a combination of small, squad-based gaming with the numbers of an MMO.
1:05: And that's it for Sony! Thanks for reading. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Still beating the PS2 dead horse? Shouldn't they be focusing on improving the lackluster PS3 rather than releasing YET ANOTHER PS2?
And the fact that he could list only three great titles, the biggest one being non-exclusive is kind of... troubling. And I heard from a few sources that MGS4 might go to Xbox. And not to mention Final Fantasy 13, which pretty much the PS3 is going to get toasted.

Hold on, "It was 10 years ago that Sony introduced the PlayStation"? Umm, the PS1 was introduced in December of 1994. Hell, 10 years ago, Final Fantasy VII had already been out for more than a year! I hope that Giz is misquoting whatever was said, or else the Sony people don't even know their own history...

@peteH: Biased much? What are you expecting? Both were pretty dull, except sony is starting up a whole new video service that is likely to trump Live's marketplace by a lot. What did MS do? Some lame Mii rip offs, an interface redesign, netflix (that you could do already on the 360 with Tversity), and what else? Did they announce any good games? No, so how did they hit it out of the park?

@Anticitizen:
Are you done venting fanboy? The PS2 is not a dead horse as long as it still occupies the position of most owned console on the planet - that is not a market you ignore, even though you silly fanboys see it as "beating a dead horse". I take it you flunked economics?
Which sources, exactly, did you hear from that MGS4 is coming to the xBox? Because Kojima verified a couple months before the release of the game that MGS4 will ONLY be on the PS3. That is straight from the horse's mouth. I'd love to know which source you have that is more definitive.
And if the PS3 is going to get "toasted", would you care to explain how it has so quickly closed the gap the 360 was allowed with a year-long head start?
So many questions, yet you will have no answers.

@Kanti_V2: Disclaimer: I own all three systems. I like the PS3's video interface, and lately have used it more than Xbox's fisher-price-ish Live interface. Oddly enough, PS3 plays better with windows media than the Xbox. I gave the Wii to my parents.
First, the Netflix thing can only be done if you have a Media Center PC. Most people don't, so that's rad.
The Mii-ish things do nothing for me, but whatever. The X-Miis actually look better and less childish than the original Miis. I don't give a rat's ass who came up with the idea - I'm all for the best implementation of an idea winning in the marketplace.
FF13 and a great game lineup. Exclusive content. MORE PORTAL. A real "price chop." A redesign of the excellent (from an architecture standpoint) Xbox Live dashboard. Not crazy about the new design, but assuming it is Zune-ish, it should be neat.
Nintendo and Sony's keynotes didn't have any "boom" moments. In comparison to MS's, they were singles - maybe MS didn't hit a home run, but it certainly hit a triple.

@peteH: (I also own all three) What "boom moments" are you talking about? No one seems psyched on the new avatars, especially since they replace gamerpics that some people stupidly paid real money for, and the general consensus is that they're too childish and cutesy for all the halo fans whose masculinity is something of a sore point for them already. And I don't have media center XP, and I had netflix streaming to my 360 (until I dropped netflix, since the quality sucks).
And since FFXIII is something that MS had nothing to with, little more than a poached exclusive that won't do anywhere near as well on their system, what great games are you talking about? Keep in mind that nothing good is exclusive on the 360, all the good games come out on the PC, where they play and look even better, and for less money.
I'm pleased with the progress all of them are making, but with MS having no good game announcements, Nintendo having some questionable game announcements (seriously, MORE casual games? Some substance would be nice.), and Sony still failing to produce it's over hyped Home, they were all about equal. Good, but largely just watching them masturbate to pictures of themselves for an hour.
@EBone: And I'm a Home beta tester too, and it's not too bad, just empty, and half finished. I doubt it will be great, but for a free interface, it's fun to mess around with every once and a while.

Posted 8:44 AM 16/7/08
@Kanti_V2: Well, I didn't mean to imply Microsoft had many "boom" moments, but I think it's ridiculous to suggest that either Sony or Nintendo's press conferences came close in terms of meaningful content. I don't want to sit here recapping Microsoft's for you, but in terms of content, exclusive Fallout 3, FF13, Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Portal: Still Alive, Lips, Halo Wars, Viva Pinata 2, You're in the Movies, and others sound pretty good (not all of them sound good to me, but I can see the appeal to various demographics for each). All of that content is exclusive to the '360 - not all were new announcements, but we got dates (on RE5, which my gut tells me will drop on the Xbox before the PS3) and details. What did Sony provide but some obscure factoids and some onanistic commentary?
And again, the Netflix thing is awesome for those who want a no-hassle, quicky way to watch content. Also, you can pull some Home-like tricks with "Live Party," but that's not that big a deal. It doesn't matter that you, or other savvy users were able to achieve this before - MS is bringing it to the masses.
As for the Mii-ish avatars, I'm with you - not particularly revolutionary or innovative. However, it's got promise, and might be nifty when animated/flowing. If MS knows one thing, it's software (not saying they're great at it, but it is their forte) - they've put this on the table and you can count on it being released in the Fall update, unlike the perennially-delayed Home (which Sony hardly said *anything* about today).
As for FF13 being a "poached exclusive," I don't think MS was hoping to outsell the PS3 in Japan and Europe simply because it's bringing FF13 to its console. I think they've got an overall plan to chip away at the video game establishment, which I'd argue they have done a great job of so far. If you're a big RPG guy, have held off on a console for a while, walk to the store and see an Xbox360-FF13 package at a significantly lower pricepoint than the PS3, you might lean Xbox. MS isn't trying to deal a deathblow, but they're working a multitude of angles to ensure that the 360 - despite its bad hardware and many other limitations - wins this generation (not counting the Wii here).

I admit it has red ringed twice - but MS has collected it, repaired it and returned it, and I have not paid a penny.
So.
My 360 failed twice in 3 years - I paid £0.00 for repairs.

@marm0lade:
I own a 360, yes. I've also played a PS3 and Wii extensively.
The PS3, IMO, just doesn't have the games to make it a decent choice. Developers aren't releasing as many games for it because it costs quite a bit to utilize all the high tech in the PS3. The Xbox 360, not so much. The Wii, definitely not.
Yeah, we have God of War 3 coming to the PS3. But what sold the PS2 was the exclusives. GTA. Devil May Cry. You get it. The PS3 lost most of it's big name exclusives. Final Fantasy 13 will mean the Xbox 360 might get a chance of being accepted in Japan--the only market the 360 hasn't really caught on in yet.
Also--customer support makes the difference. Microsoft will replace your console, no questions asked, if your console RRoD's. The PS3, if it should break...will not be replaced so easily. Sony will likely pin the blame on the owner and turn around and charge them a lot of cash for repairs. I've been through that with my PS2. Plenty of times.
About the PS2 now: What I meant by beating the dead horse is this: Sure it's okay to continue supporting new content and accessories for the PS2...but a new PS2 CONSOLE? That's taking it a bit too far for a "previous generation" console.
And lastly, MGS4: I said I had heard it *might* be making it's way to Xbox. I never said "It is coming to Xbox." I said "It miiiiight be coming to Xbox". Operative word "might."
I heard it from some friends who worked for a local mom-and-pop game shop. Hence the "might".

@SKIT2020: Dude... so off topic. It's about Sony E3 liveblog. Not about Microsoft and how much you love your xbox 360.

@Serolf Divad: WTF does everyone complain about 1 analogue stick for? You never use the second one? The only people I could imagine having a problem is left-handed people...
@marm0lade: SquareEnix also said that FFXIII was ONLY PS3... Was even after the trailers, pisses the shite outta me but now it's on X360 as well.
@Kanti_V2: Wait so stealing FFXIII from PS3 is not like the biggest thing in all the press key-notes? The what the hell is?
@Anticitizen: Ummm.... God Of War 3 is a exclusive! Also it's a huge one at that, maybe even bigger than FFXIII in terms of reach. Also FFXIII is exclusive in Japan to the PS3. There is no reason they'd want to sell it on the X360, why would Japan buy the X360 when they have the choice of the PS3 which they've sided with continually from the begging, even Halo did nothing for X360 and it WAS A HUGE EXCLUSIVE! Also your source is hardly reliable in any way, maybe just a few notches above me saying it would or might be coming to X360, also if the PS2 continues to keep selling why wouldn't they make new consoles, the market isn't even close to be to saturated to not vouch for a new PS2 kit so why does it even bring a little bit of question in your mind that they want to make money?

@krom: My first comment about my 360 Red Ringing twice was a response to another commenter.
And my second comment was on topic, I said that I wanted to see "Sony" give me a reason to play my PS3 instead of my 360.
That is not saying that I love my 360 - I just want to use all that PS3 power, I was expecting sooooooo much more when I went out and purchased my PS3, all I have got is a standard console.
I hope sony gets its act together soon.
