Somehow, Original iPhones Going For Up To US$600, Sell Now!
Posted by Matt Hickey at 2:06 PM on July 11, 2008
Many people have been waiting for the eve of the iPhone 3G's introduction to pounce on cheap first generation iPhones on eBay and Craigslist. These people are upset. For some reason, contrary to what you'd think, first generation iPhones are going for astronomical prices. Craigslist is full of people offering up to US$600 for 16GB iPhones and up to US$400 for 8GB models. The arrival of the app store might be part of it, and the fact that it'll be harder to get a 3G iPhone without contract, but $600 for a 16GB iPhone is crazy. Who wants to buy my iPod touch?

Well, the 1st gens can be porter. Plus, the phone will always be a better version of the iPod touch.
as long as apple keeps charging for iPod touch software updates, there will be a market for the originals. (though I do Agee that $400-$600 is pretty rediculous.

It's always a sellers market when it comes to Apple products. No wonder there are those fuckers on eBay who scoop up all the used iPods. I try not to buy iNto it.

Damn...but there is still the possibility that they sell 3G iPhones here in Mexico without contract and that could make me rich on ebay!

I'm in the market for an original just because there's no way that i'm going to pay an $35 a month for the data plan... I'm a poor college student and would be happy enough with wifi connections.

Well ... if you have to get the iphone 3g activated in store, you're stuck with a 2 year contract. Who wants that?
Hence the clammer for the old iphone. I personally have offers above 400 for my 8GB.... no way am i parting with it.... not until there's a clear way to unlock 3G AND not get stuck with the contract.

Mmm, I'm curious to see what scalpers will be getting off the alleged "new hotness", if this is the case with the old one.

Cons: No 3G, No GPS.
Pros: No contract, metal back, better battery life, thinner, more exclusive than the soon-to-be-ridiculously-ubiquotous black/white iPhone.

As I've said all along ever since this 3G iPhone was introduced with only 3G and GPS as the new updates, I'm hanging on to my aluminum backed, longer battery lasting, $20 data plan (with text), unlockable and jailbreakable, proven Original 16Gb iPhone. It's in excellent shape with Apple Care and shrink wrapped accessories just in case I need to dump it on eBay some day. By then it will be running the new v2.0 FW, jailbreaked and unlocked.

I just jailbroke mine and I couldn't be happier. I'm almost worried it will become impossible to find the 2G one in the future. Until the 3G is proven jailbreak-able and unlockable, it's a no-deal for me.

Wait... was there ever a 16GB first generation iPhone? Not that I'm aware of. Are you sure these Craigslist people aren't confused or scammers?
I'm just saying... your blog makes no sense.

I just solg my 4month old iPhone 8GB, and got 600$ for it, in UNDER 5 HOURS! In norways aftermarket that seems to be THE price.

I have to say that for some reason I find the first iPhone so much more revolutionary, more solid because of its metal parts and MORE DISCONTINUED that I have no problem understanding the increase in price - I predicted it to be honest. It just somehow... ages better IMO :)

There's a currently a deal going where you can get 20% cashback in your paypal account from any ebay purchase -- the amount of the cashback wavers from 10-35%, but is typically around 20% (it's stupidly easy to get it, you just go to live.com and search for any consumer product and click the "Save 20% on thing you searched for" link that is usually in the sponsored links. So that 500 dollar purchase becomes more like a 400 dollar purchase -- it can make a pretty big difference.

Here in Saudi Arabia, there still selling the iphone 8Gb new in box for $746. so 400 to 600 doesn't look that bad.

I'm really glad I bought mine the first day almost a year ago. A co-worker bought his a few months ago and the bottom part of the touch screen went out, so he got another one. Two weeks later the top part of the touch screen went out. Mine is a year going strong.
Cheaper parts=cheaper product.

The 16 GB came out sometime in the last 6 months.

Yea I actually saw this coming...I mean, I would have thought that the price would shoot up sooner, but its the principle that I predicted... Nobody really wants to pay the new data fees, and who even uses GPS, realistically?

Wow, people are stupid.
I figured I'd pick up a used one if it got cheap enough (and jailbreak the damn thing; no way I'm going with AT&T), but if morons are going to drive the prices above retail, I'll just wait for Android.

eBay is considered the most efficient market in the world. Checking prices on a site like helloshop.mobi which has iPhone eBay listings shows that prices are all over the place. Used ones are pretty cheap but brand new unlocked V1.0 iPhones are listed at up to $540. I saw some gold-plated ones starting at $2000 and a gold and diamond iPhone is listed at $7500!
