my 8 gb iphone had the bluer tint, and I upgraded to the 16gb just to find out that it had a nice yellow tint in my screen. This isn't really a new issue, just a continuation of an older one. Just luck of the draw depending on which manufacturer it comes from. People at the Apple store shoo'd me away when I brought it to their attention, even showing to them side by side with my 8gb bluer tint one.

On the lighter side the yellow tinted screen slowly grows on you, the yellows in movies look great too!

@DaKidJordan: LCD backlights dim with use (they're just flat florescent bulbs). Your new one just hasn't been used enough yet. It will dim just like your first one. Unless it's got an LED backlight now?

So I took my hoodie off only to find me in a tank top and clevage, he looked and about 5 seconds later he was talking to someone higher. I now have first dibs on two black iPhones.

I can confirm this on all 3 of the display models at my AT&T store in Huntersville, NC... noticed it right away.

Although the difference was not quite as extreme as in the photo above. It is similar to the difference between the Touch screens and the original Iphone screens, but perhaps a bit more yellowish.

My guess is after 2-3 days of your eyes adjusting, you wouldn't even notice it.

Wow so many iphone complaints and to think you guys spent a full month and a bit more advertising, fiending, and writing 75%+ of the threads on the blog about the iphone.
i feel kind of bad for those guys but i mean hey it did cost half as much so you might not expect half the quality but you should be expecting not the same thing as the first one.
(since the first one left a huge impression there are a lot of things more noticable on the new one because people would expect the same effect)
Im sure thats a firmware problem though.

I was about to comment that IMHO, the two biggest features missing from iPhone/iTouch is customizable screen settings and customizable audio EQ. Seriously, with all the functionality of the touch screen, all we get are crappy presets?

I spent a few days obsessing about this issue with the first gen phone, which I eventually exchanged. When that one was run over by a cab, I had a third phone that looked different hue-wise than the display models. There were tons of other people posting to boards about the same "problem", which made me feel less crazy. A customer service person at the Apple Store during my last phone purchase conceded that the screens do come from different places, and that while one might be preferable to another as far as I was concerned, neither was faulty to Apple.

I will say that I have not really thought about it again over the last year. You may notice a difference when comparing phones side-by-side inside the store like I did-- but believe me, whatever it was that I was seeing has not affected my enjoyment of the iPhone one bit. The problem goes away when you do.

@Jason: That wouldn't create that much of a difference, also they tend to just die more than "dim". Dimming would not shift the color gamut of a screen, it would just make it not as bright.

Traditionally, bluer phosphors in florescent backlights are more $ than others. The 3G is cheaper and no doubt there were some sacrifices made to achieve a cheaper price point that could be passed on to the consumer. I do not know this to be fact, but is entirely possible.

It has to do with the software, the calibration of the 3G's screen is more 'warmer'. The original iPhone is actually too 'cool' or blue tinted but people got used to that which is why people think the 3G is too yellow. The yellow tinted screen is actually more accurate than the original iPhone. But software/firmware updates will probably allow users to change the settings on the warmth of the screen.
