Sidekick Gekko Is Now Sidekick 2008
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:58 PM on July 10, 2008
The Sidekick that had been known as Gekko shall henceforth be called Sidekick 2008. Yes, it may be the first time since the year 2000 that we're sticking the date in a product name, but it's a trend we've so missed. Other than that, we just have a few more blurry-and-therefore-trustworthy leaked shots of the device for your perusal. The front's not bad, but the back is mighty colourful:
Ooohh, skins! [cellphonesignal]

I hate Sidekicks. They look like something that came straight out of the early 90s.

I'm still using the Sidekick II bought over 3 years ago - and I'm yet to see a better qwerty keyboard on a mobile.
But tomorrow the world is about to end for my trusty, rusty old friend.

I'm still using my old Sidekick II I got 3 years ago - with the best qwerty keyboard I've seen. Nice firm rubberized keys.
But tomorrow the world is about to end for my trusty, rusty old friend.

The most annoying thing about this phone is the insurance ads with a Manchester accent that pop up every 15 minutes or so...

in other news....T-Mobile still doesn't have 3G. and, in my neighborhood, no decent signal.

Did it get renamed because Microsoft bought them?

@sleepyyazo: I love my sidekick LX
this phone looks pretty janky.
But don't think I'm not getting the iPhone either
my little LX will be put away or it will be switched back and fourth.

@jfj: yeah, me too. my SKII has been beat to hell, but it's keyboard is unrivaled. okay, sure, the paint is all rubbed off, and it looks like a bar of soap compared to new phones, but it still works. but, you know, if someone wants to give me their old unlocked iPhone (because they are getting a 3g) to use on t-mobile, i will gladly take it. (i'm talking to you, my dear sister) ;)

In all honesty, do people still REALLY buy newer Sidekicks/Hiptops?
In Fall 2002, it was a cool concept, with a cheap plan and in some ways, an all you can eat plan for text/data (though compressed.), and a few minutes on a different kind of phone.
Fast forward, and you have a company that is only recently trying to catch up with the times, whwn they had the chance to remain on the cutting-edge of the smartphone craze. Sure, their qwerty is nice, but even the fact that most of it relies on a backend server is just horrible in my opinion, and the fact that you are paying for what had been for the most part, dumbed down games and apps, with a rediculous fee for some pretty horrible ringtones (Seriously, do I have to choose between chingy and chingy?)
It might be a "toy" to give a kid that you don't want to spend the few extra bucks on an iPhone or Instinct on, can you truly picture yourself using that thing anywhere serious or of importance?
(CUE: Horribly selected ringtone in a boardroom, where everyone else has an iPhone, Blackberry, HTC, Samsung Instinct, SE Xperia X1, etc.)
And this is coming from someone that was a (former) longtime DangerOS user, even having been on their forums for a longtime...
The video recording and playback, with MMS text is a nice update , as of late, but it's hardly enough. I honestly wonder how many of their userbase migrated to the iPhone?

Hey Soldier_cle
Not everyone has the money to buy all these touch screen phones that cost over $200.
I have never had a Sidekick but I am denitely getting this one. First off it's going to have all of this:
2mp camera w/video
Media Player
Pc-like HTML web browser
Instant Msg
Email
Automatic Backup
Removable Faceplates (customizable at sidekick.com w/your own art or pix!)
2.6″ high resolution wQVGA screen w/ micro-reflective tft lcd
Bluetooth 2.0 w/file transfer
QWERTY keyboard
Trackball
3.5mm headjack
Mirco SD slot w/ 4gb support
That is amazing stuff to me! So don't hate on it. Anyways touch screen phones aren't cool. The only GOOD one is the IPHONE ..besides that everything else is too slow and suckish.
