Segway Crash Test is Awkward For All Parties Involved
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 2:05 PM on July 11, 2008
Some agency not called the National Pedestrian Walkway and Novelty Tour Commission apparently ran the Segway though a battery of crash tests, dummies and all. I'm sure that by now many people have experienced something resembling this test, so it was probably wise to run the Seg into a few things to make sure it wouldn't kill anyone. As expected, the effect is almost identical to a tall man sprinting full speed into another, face first. An alternative back story for this video: It's a performance art piece entitled "Dude, You Kissed My Eyeball." [YouTube]

They fired a Segway at the targets, they didn't ride it under its own steam and sensors. Presumably a real world incident would be different as the tiltback upon impact would reverse the wheels.

In the background you can read "Unfallforschung der Versicherer GDV", which, I think, roughly means "Underwriting Association's Accident Research". So it's the Germans again, testing away.
I even found a press release [www.gdv.de] concering the issue, calling for helmets, speed limits (between 3.7 and 5.7 mph), license plates and some kind of Segway driving school.
There you have it. Woz will never play a game of Segway Polo in Germany.

Well, the "Novelty" aspect is certainly on point.

I sometimes wonder how much effect these safety conscious times are having on our technological output. Could you imagine the first cars ever being allowed on the road (flag waving man in front or not) if there was such a concern about absolute safety from these busybody groups.
So many of our great inventions would be stifled if these groups get there way (not that the segway is a great invention).

Sort of reminds me of kissing that girl in 8th grade for the first time. Yeah... I tried to look down her shirt too.

If this is about to happen in real life, how do you, as a pedestrian (not half cyborg douche) not step to your left and shove the goof on the segway over?

So what they are saying is: Wear Bubble-Wrap while Riding?

@daemonoid: oh ya, and the world population would have also been in control with thousands of technology related deaths everyday.

Maybe I'm missing the point a bit, but how is this really all that different from the buzillion bicyclists zipping around?

I couldn't stop laughing! This is comedy GOLD! Seriously, I'm crying right now. Maybe it's just me, but that is hilarious.

Dean Kamen would have you believe otherwise, but segways are friggin' dangerous, especially on uneven terrain. Fun as hell though.
Had some guy yell at me, as he drove past the other day, "GET A CAR!"
I dont even own the segway i was on, and i was posted right next to my car.
Who's the douchebag now?

@Geraldo: Because they're actually on a legit vehicle and mode of transportation.
@nutbastard: No offense, you were still on a segway.

@luckybastard:
I thought it was a universal understanding among humans that as soon as you step on a segway, no matter the reason, you must accept that you look like a handicapped nerd.
That being said, you must accept any and all verbal abuse and/or humiliation that occurs while on said segway.

THe slo-mo has the effect of making the rider look even more clueless and nerdy.
