'Sculpture' Fires Beer Bottles at a Wall at 600KPH
Posted by Adam Frucci at 1:02 AM on July 16, 2008
Now this is what I call art. It's a sculpture/robot that flings empty beer bottles at a solid wall at 600 KPH, smashing them to smithereens. As the exhibit goes on during the day, a pile of green shards of glass piles up under the wall. It's a comment on rock and roll or something, but I'm a simple man. I just like seeing things smash. If you're like me, you can go check out the cannon at the SUPERDOME exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Hit the jump for another shot of the cannon in action.

I totally want a few to set up my home perimeter defense system. Any volunteers to help me produce the empties for ammo?

I designed something similar to this to send my empties across my yard into the woods behind my house. The only thing that stopped me was a lack of a large CO2 cylinder. It was/will be a motar like device in which you slide your empties in, and it uses compressed air to shoot it skywards. This came to mind after designing a air powered potatoe gun.

@Saboth: I was thinking the same thing... perhaps they become completely obliterated and the fragments are so small that they simply fall down harmlessly. That or they have plastic around the impact zone.
Nice vid, btw.

ok, i know 373MPH SOUNDS like it's really fast.
but it's only 547 feet per second.
which is how fast it would be going if it did a free fall with negligible atmospheric interference from a height of 4896 feet.

The official site is here: [www.palaisdetokyo.com]
It's called Afasia 1. Even with that, I still can't find a video.
Guys: Don't blame Giz for the lack of video! It's the fault of everyone who has been there and took no videos!

@erikislame: Agreed. It's like picking up your cup of soda only to find there is none left because your greedy wife drank it while you were on the computer working your finances to make sure her overactive shopping habit doesn't end up making us live on the street then having your dog hit by a car because we have no walls in which to keep him restrained. I HATE that.

After I go on a crazy rampage in the Bellevue Square Apple Store and destroy everyone sitting at the genius bar with a stupid question, this is the way I would like to be put to my death: Beer bottles being tossed at me at 373 miles per hour.
Mmmmm... Beer.

I like this. It would be a great device to throw people out of bars. Just load in some empties and aim it at that obnoxious drunk guy hitting on all the chicks. You may have to slow down the MPH though... just a bit.

I have a vision...
Ammunition is far too much expensive.
Just mount those babies on military vehicles and organize the gathering of beer bottles across the US. Problem solved!
ps: Soldiers packed with full bottles could also reload on the battlefield!

Okay... looks like a bottle batting cage to me. Not so much "art". Someone put A-Rod at the end of that thing - maybe he'll get hit by a pitch.

Well hell yeah! How's else am I supposed to get ammo for the cannon if I don't drink it?

Who else wants to build one and have a battle with me? Of course it would be a shame to shoot full bear bottles.
Do you think that you could shoot a molotov cocktail out of one? I think I've just found a new hobby.

funny, i was there a few days ago. so:
there's plastic around the last meters, so you couldn't get hit by anything.
you couldn't get hit anyway, because the bottle literally turns into dust.
you don't really see much either, it just makes a whole lot of noise and that's all. unfortunately it doesn't tell you when it's about to launch.
