Scent-Emitting LCD Display is Just Asking for Misuse
Posted by Adam Frucci at 5:40 AM on July 29, 2008
One would think that if a restaurant wanted to lure people inside with the smells of delicious food, they would do so by cooking delicious food. Not necessarily! In Tokyo, a company called Recruit Co. Ltd. is using scent-emitting LCD displays to entice people into eating at restaurants in the mall under Tokyo Station.
Essentially, it's a 42-inch display that spurts out different scents as different advertisements play, luring people to come grab a flyer to lead them to the restaurant in question. This seems strange to me. And while yeah, I'm sure a screen puffing out clouds of ramen-scented gas is going to make me hungry, can't you see the slippery slope this puts us on? I don't want to have hackers take over these things and make all of Tokyo Station smell like farts or a locker room. Scent terrorism is knocking at our door, and we have to be vigilant at not answering. Stay strong, Japan. [Far East Gizmos via Oh Gizmo!]

There's a joke in there somewhere about restaurants just spraying the scent stuff directly on their $#!77Y food.

interesting... oh and i am pretty sure that you cannot hack into something like this hence the scents are physically created beforehand. although the most damage i could see as far as hacking goes is scents getting mixed up and just creating a weird mass of smells.

@ZackHoagie: Hacking the smell, that is.

It's a funny idea, but obviously impossible unless they actually open up the booth to repace the cartridge that holds the scent.

Man, it's just Smell-o-Vision all over again.
Though I am forced to wonder how a hacker would make it smell like farts. Replace the "ramen.sml" file and all the others with a "fart.sml" that they somehow created to smell like farts? That's 1337 -- creating your own smell hack

So, it's basically like whenever you walk by Williams Sonoma in the mall, and they are just pan frying spices scientifically proven to make you freak out in hunger and come into Williams Sonoma.
Because, otherwise, why the fuck would you walk into Williams Sonoma?

They already have scented LCD's on the metro card stations in NYC subways, however it only comes in one scent: urine.

I just hope they don't start spraying the stuff that comes out your mouth after a bottle of whiskey or so...

@ZackHoagie: I think the poster knew this, and was just trying to be funny. However, on a more serious note, wouldn't it be possible to mix certain smells to obtain a smell similar to a fart? So potentially, a hacker COULD hack this box to smell like farts. They would just have to obtain a list or samples of the smells on the box, and then figure out which ones combined smell like a reefer!

why put something scented in front of a restaurant? most restaurants already give off smells of deep fried goodness and I honestly don't see any real purpose in this.
