Sarotech's Abigs DVP-260X Media Player Holds 320GB, Does 5.1 Audio and HDMI, Plus FM Transmitter
Posted by Jason Chen at 4:20 AM on July 25, 2008
Sarotech's' 2.5-inch ABigs player seems to be designed by an engineer with a gigantic budget. Why? Because it's got a 2.5-inch display, H.264 and MKV support, 1080p over HDMI and 5.1-channel out, a built-in FM transmitter, a photo viewer, an e-book and both PAL and NTSC compatibility. The 160GB version is available for US$278 and the 320GB version is available for US$328 from Korea, which isn't all that bad considering everything you get from it. If you still want the Korean flavour of this Sarotech but a bit more US availability, there's always Cowon's PMPs. They've got not quite as massive storage, but their format support is phenomenal. This device's Sigma 8623 will generally not play 1080p or even 720p MKVs smoothly... the most recemt Sigma 8634/5 will do a much better job (as used in meejah centres like the Popcorn Hour, etc.)

Why are Up/Down and Left/Right on separate buttons? That seems really odd. My guess is that the display cover pops off and can be attached to the back while in use.

i can't find any hands-on reviews or detailed technical specs on this thing. i'd buy one in a heartbeat, except that i'm skeptical of the ability of what looks like a pocket-sized device to play 1080p content smoothly - something that many full-size PCs with decent graphics hardware can't do well at this point.

How do we know that's even a flap? I might just be a birthmark or something.

@Aoi: Depending on whether or not it sucks ...
So far Belkin and Griffin are the only two makers of FM transmitters I've found that work decently and even then, it differes between products.
I tried Kensington, and their transmitter completely blew.

I'm wondering why I'm finding this strangely appealing. I'd also like to know what's behind the flap.

I like the idea of having a built in FM transmitter. It would make it very convenient for playing it over my car's radio.

The flap covers all the connector holes to keep dirt out, see the list of all of them on the outside? Open flap and plug in your stuff. This would also be great for parties where you have regular FM tuners on an installed stereo or a boom box around. Wonder what the range is on the transmitter?

2.5 inch hdd or 2.5 display. I cant see the display. Name seems to be wrong too. It should end with S not X.

I seriously doubt there's a display. The spec sheet said 2.5 inch hdd not 2.5' display

I don't think it has a screen. Not one of their pictures of it shows a screen. I looked at their English website and it seems to me that it's meant to hook up to a HDTV or an in-dash display in your car. It like a high-def external hard drive.
All in all it looks like a pretty good deal for $328. But I am mystified why you would make a device like this with this much storage and not include support for any lossless audio codecs.

@Lobaba: I think the 260S is a different device - the one in this article is supposed to have HDMI out. The 260S does not.

Yup, don't think this has a screen at all. It only has leds to show what it's doing. It's just an external hard drive case really.

@itchy : Looks like you are right. It's a different device with perhaps similar design? I still stand firm on 'where's-that-screen?' Looks more like an internal makeover.
@joshwaa : If it has a screen..they should at least make it 3inch. But then again, high resol+big screen+powersuckingchip = baaaaaad battery life. Till the day batteries improve!
