Samsung's Two-Headed LCD Monitor Gets Reviewed
Posted by Matt Hickey at 12:40 PM on July 9, 2008
There's something satisfying about having multiple monitors on your machines to keep things organised that you can't really describe. Samsung knows this but also knows that sometimes a full second monitor is overkill, thus the SyncMaster 2263. We've seen it before, but Wired has the first review we've seen up, and it's a a fairly neutral one. Highlights include the attractive finish and innovative design. The downsides include average performance and a high price. We do agree with reviewer, though, that it's a neat idea and somebody's going to figure out how to execute it well, and they'll probably make quite a bit of money. [Wired]

That's cool, I want one! I'd love three. In fact that is what I have now! All-in-One would be great!

This seems a bit odd to have just a 7" screen. Most people need a second monitor for space to put things, especially graphic artists and the like. Perhaps if it was bigger (say the height of the monitor but only 3-4 inches wide) then I would have a place for my palettes.
Other than that I can't figure out a single use for that thing.

I'd love to hear a practical use for this. Hasn't it been researched that a single larger screen is more efficient than two screens?

What can you do with the extra 7" screen?

Hmmm wasn't that monitor in Total Recall? No, wait that was Kuato.

@ripfire: Simple, the 7" is used for work while the main screen is used for gaming.

Screen's too small.....and in Vista you can't make it so the sidebar covers the whole screen, you would have to drag every widget there individually which ends up taking too much CPU power.

@ripfire: You can have it constantly posting your PCs core tempurature, fan speeds, and CPU usage data. You can have it display the weather, time, and traffic conditions. You can have it display stocks. You can have it display your health and ammo in a FPS.
There's alot of things.

Ok, seriously, this is one of the most ridiculous designs I've seen in a while. A second monitor can be overkill? Since when? I use four widescreen LCD monitors! That tiny thing would be absolutely useless and frustrating to me.

That's a good idea. For web designers you can use the tiny screen for code, main screen for design.

@Atheist Jew:
I dont watch much TV at all... maybe an hour a day if I remember to turn it on... but I do watch. Thing is, I dont have a lot of space in my room for a TV or a good angle to put it while Im on my computer. My solution? an extra monitor (because its the most space saving option) to watch tv on.
That little tv would remove my need for the extra monitor... or better yet, I could do something more productive with the other monitor.

I use my second monitor for watching TV (tuner card in the computer). Or IM windows. Or put a music/video player on it while working.
If I didn't already have two nice displays, this would be... interesting.

@Leonard Nimrod: We have a number of 30" screens (4Mpixel) at work, and I have a 20" and two 17"s (4.5Mpixel) at home. My home setup is FAR more usable for multitasking. Sure, I won't be able to open the monstrous 9000 cell spreadsheet, but I just find it a lot easier to manage multiple programs horizontally rather than vertically.

@theshortguy: Yes they did, everyone knows that a 20inch screen and a 7 inch screen go great together.

I wonder if they put any research into the ratio of what sizes go well together?

I have a 19inch screen and a 15 inch screen, they look kind of weird next to each other because the 19 inch has like double the screen area because its widescreen and the other isn't. Oh yeah, i have a 2 inch screen on my keyboard.

"What can you do with the extra 7in screen? that's actually practical and useful?"

It would be useful to have things like ventrillo up so you can see who is speaking, etc. I'd rather just spring for a 2nd monitor though. That thing can't be cheap.

@Leonard Nimrod:
I tile my laptop to a larger 19 inch. It is a godsend when working in excel with multiple sheets. Window -> New Window then manipulate the variables on one tab/monitor and watch the results on the second tab/2nd monitor. It makes a big difference in my work as there is less mouse use.
WHen not using excel I use it to keep track of emails on one monitor while working on my main.

Um, no.
I'm using 2x22 inch screens, and I could really use a 3rd. A little dinky 7" screen isn't going to help much with code editing. The only use I could really see for this is to drag all of the photoshop toolbars onto it.

@groverdog: KILLIAN! GIVE ZEE PEOPLE ZEE AIR!
Brilliant.
Yes, it's a clever idea, but I agree with the status quo. 7"? Seems a bit pointless... being a multi-screener myself, even the secondary monitor less than 17" for palates, etc., is almost a waste.

@Cyfer911: or watch it on the big screen and play games on.... you know what this idea is useless, no one wants to use a 7 inch screen next to a big screen, why can they make a screen with a dial on the side that lets you choose the size?
