Samsung D980 Dual-SIM Touchscreen Phone Hits Intertubes
Posted by Kit Eaton at 8:56 PM on July 17, 2008
Samsung has kept developing its LG Prada knock-off F480 full-touchscreen phone and turned it into the D980. This is a dual-SIM version of the phone, hitting China first in a D988 version and then apparently the rest of the world as the D980 DuoS. It's a tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE device, with 2.6-inch QVGA screen and 5-megapixel auto-focus cam with a flash. There's no pricing or timing info yet, but since Blam had some bad things to say about the F480 mobile phone back in February, let's hope they've improved the touchscreen too. [Unwiredview]

I'm a little behind the times; what does "Dual-SIM" mean? You can have two phone numbers on one phone?

Yes, you can have two sim cards in the phone at a single time. Especially useful for using one data line and one phone line, making your phone bill a lot more affordable.

When will they standardize USB chargers for all cellphones?

It's also a favorite of people who frequently cross the Hong Kong / China border, so they'll have two SIM cards - one HK, one China.

Man, I could really use this -- it'd beat carrying around 2 phones (one for work, one for personal).

Are the designers of these gadgets under some kind of restrictions from a design point of view? I'd prefer if these companies would make products that are unique and innovative. Shape, style, material aesthetics, originality, feel, and make give it a kiwi/strawberry flavor too. Hundreds of thousands of phones to choose from multiple brands, but most are cheap looking designed in a basement during an outtage. Give me a blunt crayola crayon, out the lights and spin me round and I know I can still do better. Rant ended.
