Rumour Smashed: AT&T Free Wi-Fi for iPhones Isn't Live Yet
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 2:46 AM on July 19, 2008
Damn it AT&T, stop pulling this crap. Not only is the AT&T page proclaiming the good news down, Om got confirmation from AT&T that free iPhone Wi-Fi at Starbucks is not the droids you are looking for:
"We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone. The webpage was posted in error and is being removed. Wi-Fi is a real differentiator for AT&T and it is our intention to make it available to as many customers as possible, but we have no announcement at this time."
Can you just make up your mind then? [GigaOm]

ZOMG, please don't bother to report this when it reappears. It's not your fault-- at all-- but this is just beyond aggravating. This is what, like the fifth time this has happened?
Dear AT&T, I'm an iPhone customer and I don't even give a shit about this anymore. Get your heads out of your asses and quit messing this up.
Gah. I know things sometimes 'leak', but this is just beyond ridiculous.

Does this mean this case has been settled?

this really is very funny. like no-one involved in web content distribution has any idea when the projects they work on are going to launch. I agree that it makes the mgmt look pretty sad.

WTF. If it already works in some locations as evidenced by the fact that some people have gotten the signal, why not just leave it on in "select locations"

"Wi-Fi is a real differentiator for AT&T"
Yes, your Wi-Fi efforts mark you as completely incompetent and a pack of idiots.

Why do we care if we're getting 3G already? Not a big deal really...

GAH, I jumped to AT&T (for the iHype) after being with Verizon for 8 years, this is not inspiring confidence.

I'm missing something here. Is there supposed to be a difference between WiFi for the iPhone and WiFi for everything else? Like it's a special brand of wireless that'll detect you're trying to connect with an iPhone and block you but let you in if you're using a laptop?

They can't even keep a simple blurb from appearing on their webpage over and over and over again.
Wow AT&T management, you guys are doing a great job. It's really easy to control stuff like this, so here's a free tip from me to you, AT&T: Wait until it actually launches, then put a blurb on your webpage. In simpler terms:
1. just pretend the internet doesn't exist and you don't have a website you can update
2 then wait for the official launch of the internet (at your hotspots),
3.then create your little webpage telling everyone that free-wifi exists.
It'll be like 1996 all over again! Oh the suspense!

@SlinkyDink: .....if AT&T doesn't help your own government to spy on you, the terrorists win.

Give AT&T a break, they have thier full spying on the telephone conversations of 300 million Americans.

Simple share a little bandwidth at home and get a multitude of hotspots free. If you really do not want to share your bandwidth and I am not saying do this but, well you could always put a cap on one of your router ports or run QOS. Its not that difficult. Five minutes of setup for free wifi

AT&T disappoints again.
I see a day where citizens stand up against AT&Ts BS and take them down.

ordinarily, I'd cut you guys a break on this sort of jackassery. However, in this case all you guys had to do was make a phone call to an AT&T flack and go to a couple of Starf*cks. And with the magic of the iPhone you couldve done both at once.
Reporting fail.

Posted by mistake ... how does someone in their IT department pull a "Right-Click publish" to production without management saying ... "Sure that sounds like a good idea"
AT&T, get your head out of you know where

Um, this post is not ENTIRELY accurate.
I was a the Starbucks inside Barnes & Nobles in Greenwood, IN yesterday and hooked up just fine the AT&T wireless on my new 8GB iPhone! I saw the advert by the cash register while buying a Root Beer for my son and tried it out. It worked without a hitch.
You may want to try it out before believing what you read...

Um, this post is not ENTIRELY accurate.
I was at Barnes & Nobles in Greenwood IN yesterday and I hooked onto the free AT&T Wireless connection there just fine on my new 8Gb iPhone!
BTW, I was in the in-store Starbucks there, that is where I saw the sign advertising it.
