Rumour: Leaked Microsoft Email Confirms 60GB Hard Drive Package, 120GB Hard Drive Price Drop
Posted by Jason Chen at 5:59 AM on July 9, 2008
A leaked email sent out to buyers at GameStop and Blockbuster shows three things that Microsoft will announce before or around E3 next week. One, there's a 60GB Pro console package coming. Two, there's a US$99 60GB hard drive pack for Arcade and Core owners, which comes also with 3 months of Xbox Live, a wired headset and an Ethernet cable. Three, the 120GB hard drive will drop down to US$149 in September. Nothing extraordinary, but all pretty decent announcements for people who don't already have enough space on their 360s. Hit the jump for the full email.
With the introduction of the 60GB Pro console in July, we have research that suggests it is very important to have a 60GB stand alone Hard Drive to go along with it to allow the consumer a full range of choices and values. In late October/early November (exact date TBD but most likely last week in October or 1st week in November), we will ship the Xbox 360 60GB Hard Drive, tentatively called the "Xbox 360 60GB LIVE Starter Pack". This will be an excellent value price at and ERP of US$99.99 with an 18% retail margin that contains:
· 60GB Hard Drive
· 3 Months of Xbox Live
· Xbox 360 Wired Headset
· Xbox 360 Ethernet Cable (same one that is included with Pro and Elite)
Positioning: For Xbox 360 Arcade and Core console owners, the Xbox 360 60GB Live Starter Pack offers all of the components to get onto Xbox LIVE and jump in to on line multiplayer gaming and Marketplace content downloads at an incredible value.
With the end of life of the 20GB Hard Drive and the price drop of the 120GB Hard Drive to US$149.99 in September, this new 60GB hard drive will fit very well into our "Choice and Value" pillar and will fit nicely into our accessory line up. Exact SKU/UPC/Set up info will come soon and once we nail down the exact MSD, I will let you all know immediately.

Does anyone know or can they confirm if these new Xbox 360's with 60gb hard drive will be the new "Jasper" series.
Rumor back when said "Jaspers" would be coming out August 8th, which is quite soon.
"Jasper" consists of a new motherboard layout with most importantly the ATI graphics chip being shrunk to 65nm and the memory chips on the motherboard will also be smaller.

Seeing as how retail for a wireless network antenna is also 100$, it isn't surprising. Currently though for computers that amount of money will get you about 500gb. Since there is no competition between third parties for this stuff, Microsoft essentially has a monopoly within its little realm of XBox accessories.

If previous pricing is any indicator the value pack will only be a buck or two more than the 60g drive alone.

The 60GB standalone better be under $85 if this is true.

You know it's all cool and everything but $99 for a 60Gb Harddrive and $150 for 120Gb HD ? Seriously ? Seriously ??? I thought they were not even manufacturing such sizes except for SSDs. I can buy a 750Gb drive for sometimes <$99 and pop it in my PS3. Not bashing Xbox since it's an awesome console but come on now these prices are ridiculous.

@StarControl: What? both systems use 2.5" drives. Maximum size is 500GB for just under $300.
I have a PS3 and can't fathom what you would do with more than 40GB. The xbox has tons of downloadable games and hd movies at 5GB each.

60GB $50
120GB $60
320GB $130

@StarControl: You can't buy a 750gb drive and pop it into the ps3. They don't make 750gb 2.5" sata drives, yet. Max size is 300gb right now.

@fastm3driver: uh...what?! So the GBs of music and video, in addition to the 3GB downloadable content for UT3, content for MotorStorm, CoD4, Warhawk etc... the 4.6 GB install for MGS4 and installs for Uncharted, Heavenly Sword etc not to mention titles on PSN and the others that are forthcoming, Warhawk, GT5: Prologue, Wipeout HD, LittlebigPlanet, Socom...you actually believe that a 40GB HDD is enough for the average PS3 user?
Oh I get it...you're joking. the absurd nature of that logic makes for a good funny because I'm using over 40GBs on my 250GB PS3 HDD and 20GBs on the 500GB external (also connected to the PS3) with everything from music, games, videos, demos and smut.
Good try though

This is where MicroShaft kills me. They could very easily make the 360 use USB external storage for everything but would rather gouge people with their ridiculously overpriced proprietary HDDs. They may still have the cheapest system "out of the box", but when you factor in the $99 WiFi adapter (the exact same one that they have had since LAUNCH) that advantage is handed right back to Sony by them having all that in the box and BR to boot.
With the new pricing plan a 120GB hdd is HALF the price of a WHOLE FREAKING SYSTEM!!!!! That stupid WiFi adapter is 1/3 of a system. It's regoddamndiculous!!
This is't flame bait, just the plain truth. I <3 my Elite AND PS3 but I just can't get over how much M$ gets away with.

NOOOO!!! Why does the 60gb hard drive starter pack have to take until Oct/Nov to come out? I'd like to buy it now for my Arcade! : (

The 120GB hard drive is currently $180 so dropping it to $150 is insignificant, particularly since the stand alone drives for PC in the same size range are much less expensive.

So, I'm assuming that the $299 price drop will be for all new "Pro" packages...not just the current ones, anyone know anything concerning that??
If so, I will definitely buy one...
