Posted by John Mahoney at 12:38 AM on July 10, 2008
Canucks screamed, Rogers listened. Word from the North this morning is that Rogers will be offering a promotional 6GB data plan for $30 bucks a month if you activate a three-year contract before August 31--not the unlimited data we Yanks will be using, but pretty close. Click on for the full release from the horse's mouth. [Rogers]

You kids in the US and Canada have nothing to complain about. Have you seen the plans in Australia or New Zealand (below) that we have to put up with, it's absolutely ridiculous. We've never had unlimited anything in these countries, mainly due to the people though, I mean if they'll keep paying these crazy prices, then why stop charging.

Wow the petition really did work, although Roger is not saying it's unlimited data, canadians can pretty much called it unlimited, AT&T tells us in the states it's unlimited but as soon as we get to 5GB a month they wanna see WTF is going on cause no one really uses that much data

@atuck: Well, they don't technically have a "cap" per-se, but if you are a consistently overbearing user on the network, they will send you a notice and give you one billing cycle to tone it down a notch, then they cut your data plan.

"Arent the 'unlimited' data plans from ATT actually capped at 5GB?"
@atuck: Not true, at least back in the early days of the original.
I (along with the rest of the ModMyiPhone IRC regulars) were wondering how far we could take it before we got slapped by AT&T, and I got as far as 13GB one month, and I don't recall hearing from them.
That's not to say that all of us being a bunch of crazy assholes with unholy amounts of data usage for the past year didn't make them change their minds, though.
...and I believe that Gizmodo is singularly responsible for this. Before I left for work this morning, I read all of the complaints from Rogers customers, and when I checked when I got home? Problem solved.

I have an aircard with Sprint and use it a decent amount with my laptop and last month only used 3.5gb. This was loading full web pages, viewing FLVs, downloading a few MP3s, etc. I dare say it'd be pretty hard to exceed 6gb on an iPhone. Not saying it cant be done, but you'd have to be without life and/or female company.

If not then that is an additional $24 a month (that's already included in the iPhone specific plans.
Something tells me the best option is the cheapest iPhone plan with the additional data. $100+ a month for a phone though: time to buy some Rogers stock.

Not good enough... They'll still impose certain restrictions, charge for features that should be standard. They're apply a PR Band-Aide.
On Telus, I pay $30 for Voice Plan (200 Daytime, Unlimited Evenings & Weekends starting at 6pm) & $45 for Unlimited Data (Browsing, IM, Email, Unlimited Text & Caller ID plus extended Voicemail). Comes to $93 per month after Taxes. On an HTC S640.
Rogers/Fido are the worst, it's the worst customer service, they'll switch plans and rates in mid-contract, and dole out supurflous charges for the most basic features. They have no respect for their customers. And I'm sure the scam on these plans will be that they're for a limited time... like a 3 month promotional package.

If AT&T caps @ 5GB then that means these guys are actually offering better than AT&T. About time they start treating those Canadians right.

@chrispie: They resume with their regularly scheduled rip-off.
This is merely damage control and spin combined.
Consumers will be screwed less as gratitude for giving them enough signups to exceed supply so they can blame Apple for the supply bottleneck when no phones are available. In doing so they're going to try to make them look like the bad guy and that Apple doesn't care about you. They'll hope this will put enough pressure on Apple to release of more handsets to them for re-sale. By that time the promo will be over and the plans will be the regular rates that everyone had a problem with in the first place.
Rinse and repeat if Apple tries to restrict supply again after that.
The early adopters gain an, Rogers gets some sales and PR points by pretending to care, and the market still gets screwed. You can stick your iPhone Ted.

A $15 data plan for 50 or 100MB would be a great option too. I think Rogers' $15 data plan for Blackberry gets you 1.5MB (yes, megabytes), and the $30 plan is 300MB now. If they would beef up the $15 plan to a level that's not insulting, they could sell a lot of those plans, for both iPhones and Blackberries.

Well its a start. But I wonder when Teddy will be proactive and rathern than just have the $30 data as a promotion make it full time...or even better, make the 6GB standard data plan and make the only variable the voice plan. That would be the truly proactive and consumer conscience thing to do. (Ya right, its Robbers)
As for those who are moaning and complaining about the 3 year contract - well thats the way Robbers has been since I got my first cell over a decade ago. So there really is no change there. I am not saying I am ok with it, but its been the policy for a long time with any purchase of a cell for the best price they can offer.
The second question I have, which I may have to direct to the Gold ol' minions of Robbers CS is whether the 3 year contract must include both data and voice, or if (to appease the wife) i can cancel the data and just have voice? (Before I get flamed, I know "whats the point of having an iphone with no data?" to that i respond..IT'S JUST A QUESTION, and remember 'happy wife, happy life').

Well its a step in the right direction. Now to be really proactive (rather than reactive) the 6gig should be standard and only airtimes should affect the price. Think Ol' Teddy will do this? And, how long till the 'promotion' will become permenant?
Also, unfortunately for all the ney-sayers on the 3 year contract, Robbers has always had a 3 year sign up with a HUP/new phone. So thats really no different. Crappy, but no different. Which leads me to my second question, which I may have to give some of Ted's minions a call about. If is sign up and buy (with promo obviously) can i cancel the data portion of the contract and just have my old voice plan only? (thus eliminating $30/month in order to appease the wife if need be). Or do i have to be on both voice and data for all 3 years?

yeah good for the early adopters, but rogers is still fucking you brutally if you sign the contract from september onwards. i love you canadians, but your phone companies abuse the balls off of you, therefore i can't ever afford to live among you and still have a cell phone with internet access.
3 year contract, and no way of getting fair pricing unless you sign up before september....not even AT&T is doing that. so much for any plans of moving to mr. rogers' neighborhood.

@NicleT:
You guys are being dumb. They haven't update the prices on the website yet. Those are the old prices. The press release they sent out this morning said they are offering $30 for 6GB for a limited time, but takes effect July 11th. Gizmodo is not wrong, That is the offical press release from Rogers. You can find it under investor relations-Press Releases on Rogers site.

I just spoke to Customer Relations at Rogers and you cannot purchase an iphone unless you are a new customer or you are already eligible for a hardware upgrade. WTF!

@tailwind:
He's right:
100$ / 6 GB!
$15 = 2 MB (over charge = $10/MB)
$25 = 4 MB (over charge = $10/MB)
$30 = 300 MB (over charge = $0.50/MB)
$60 = 1 GB (over charge = $0.50/MB)
$80 = 3 GB (over charge = $0.50/MB)
$100 = 6 GB (over charge = $0.50/MB)
they also propose a FLEX plan ?!!!
$50-$100 = 500 MB to 5 GB (between 0.01 and 0.02 cents per MB) (over charge = $0.03/MB)
How Does it Work?
#
Each month, the Rogers Flex Rate Plan automatically adjusts your Monthly Service Fee based on your actual data usage.
#
You will start each month at Tier 1 ($50 base Monthly Service Fee and up to 500 MB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 500 MB, then you move up automatically to Tier 2 ($65 Monthly Service Fee and up to 1 GB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 1 GB, then you move up automatically to Tier 3 ($75 Monthly Service Fee and up to 2 GB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 2 GB, then you move up automatically to Tier 4 ($85 Monthly Service Fee and up to 3 GB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 3 GB, then you move up automatically to Tier 5 ($100 Monthly Service Fee and up to 5 GB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 5 GB, then you pay only 3ยข per additional MB.
... see they aren't THAT cheap afterall!

@ericlewis91: I get the feeling this is the same Eric Lewis from iLounge (?) because saying first is just a part of his age range.
On topic, I'm glad Rogers listened but not glad they're charging $30 for what should be essentially a part of the plan at no extra cost. I burned through 10GB of my bandwidth just by watching Youtube videos so I'm not sure how fast it'll be burned through on the iPhone.

The promotion of optional add on iPhone 6 GB data plan for $30.00 on a 36 month term with DECF $100.00 is correct and available to only iPhones sold through authorized Rogers dealers, not for unlocked iPhones purchased on eBay, Craigslist, etc. This information was released to all dealers Nationally today and will be updated on the Rogers.com website soon. Keep in mind though that it will cost customers more by choosing a separate minimum $30.00 voice plan plus minimum $30.00 data plan plus features such as $7.00 call display, $8.00 visual voicemail and $10.00 2500 National sms (text messages) as well adding SAF $6.95 and 911 $0.50 = $92.45 plus taxes which doesn't get you access to free WIFI at Hotspots, 2500 local call forwarding minutes or the 10000 sms. It would of been better and easier for the company to just up the data bucket on all the iPhone all in one plans to include 6 GB of data and just vary the pricing based on the voice minutes included.

That 6GB is still double to the speed-crippled 3GB (the limit is mentioned in the smallest print) we have here in Finland. Well, it's ONLY EUR 16 (about $25) per month but still.
TeliaSonera is ripping us off in every other manner too. Cheapest of the three basic options is EUR 31.69 (around $50) and what do we get? A single one hundred of everything! 100min calls, 100 SMS, 100MB of data... Wait, what? Yes. 100MB! It's like three YouTube videos and two square miles of Google Maps or so? Jeez...
I made some quick calculations that if I'd personally switch over to TeliaSonera my phone bill would go AT LEAST triple - just for calls, SMS and data. Even with the "fully customizable" subscription. So dear Canada - We share your pain.
