Revive Those Repressed Sega Genesis Memories With 16-bit Blaze Portable Game Player
Posted by Jack Loftus at 5:00 AM on July 28, 2008
If you weren't lucky enough to have an SNES back in the 90's, and were instead stuck with a Sega Megadrive (Genesis), the Blaze 16-bit handheld will bring a flood of those memories back to the surface and them some. The controller set up is even the same, complete with the Start button switching that made fighters like Street Fighter 2 impossible to play. Blaze is a fraction of the size of the original Genesis, and comes preloaded with 20 games. Some of them are actually pretty good.
The Blaze is loaded with Sonic and Knuckles, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Ecco the Dolphin, Alex Kidd - Enchanted Castle, Alien Storm Altered Beast, Arrow Flash, Crackdown, Decap Attack, Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Ecco Junior, Flicky, Gain Ground, Jewel Master, Kid Chameleon, Sonic Spinball and Shadow Dancer. I said some. [Crowded Brain]

@Chimera: I had to get the rechargable pack for mine, but it barely lasted any longer (but hey, at least it didn't eat through batteries!)
I actually found the system itself the other day. Still worked, but some of the screen had messed up, and the X button was permanently pressed down.
I forgot how heavy the Nomad was...

I had the original Sega Megadrive/Genesis hand held...the Nomad! Ate batteries like nothing I've ever seen, but had 6 real buttons and was the best way to play SF2 on the go.

"If you weren't lucky enough to have an SNES back in the 90's, and were instead stuck with a Sega Megadrive (Genesis)"
Is this statement meant to be facetious ? As I recall the Genesis was pretty competitive throughout the 16-bit generation, even though the SNES debuted much later, and thus had some technical superiority.
"Sega began 1992 with a number of advantages: a 55% to 45% market share over the Super NES, a lower price, and a tenfold advantage in number of games...A Sony focus group found that teenage boys would not admit to owning a Super NES rather than a Genesis...Neither console could maintain a definitive lead in market share for several years."

Just sayin...

Um, you could actually play Street Fighter with the original Genesis controller, I just wouldn't recommend it.

The Mean Bean Machine? Man, I have some memories with that one. Spinball is bound to keep me for a few minutes (after seeing that thing speedrunned, though...)
But no Sonic 3 and Knuckles? awwwww...

This is amazing, espicially if the battery life is not like Sega's official hanhelds.
the case looks good too.

Altered Beast! Man, I loved that game to death. If they included Bad Dudes and Sonic and Knuckles, I'd be all over this.

I, too, had a Nomad, the battery-eating beast, but the envy of every school field trip!

so this thing is the size of those of those little nintendo machines that you could get for 50 bucks?
funny how it looks just like it too...sega could've been a little more original and not just come out and said "hey great idea, we'll do that too" like they did here.
you know what would be great? if they made one of these things which took into account the controllers of the snes, the nes, and the sega genises and kept the size to the size of the machine above.
one conquering that issue, they get it so that you could buy all the old games over the net from them (or third party vendors) and download them wirelessly into a built in flash drive into the machine
then allow for whichever games that had multiplayer to be played with others who also had the system wirlessly
keep that machine to 50 bucks and well...i think these things would be mmuch more successful.

Whoever said Genesis was better than SNES is n00bsauce! Ancient console fanboy bickering FTW!
Seriously though, this is kinda neat - it will be way neater once the soldering iron army gets ahold of it and opens up its possibilities.

I'm going to buy it if I see it in a store somewhere. I loved all those games.
And, by the way, the Sega Genesis was *hardcore* and way better that the SNES.

Don't the Chinese make MP4 players that take Genesis ROMs? And also, if it's just Sonic and Knuckles without Sonic 3 added on, it's only half a game. :P

sonic spinball was the game that introduced me to the world of getting so frustrated with games that i would throw the controller at the tv and storm off, only to try all over again the next day. god i love the genesis

Both systems were good on their own merits. However, with things like how the SNES version of Mortal Kombat had no blood and the Genesis version had lots of it, it started Nintendo down the whole "kiddy" road that it's been in ever since... They have Mario and Zelda (and all the RPGs back then), but if you want blood and gore and an "adult" system, you should go with another system...
That said, I had an SNES and I loved it, but the Genesis definitely had several good games and was a decent system. But yeah, I can't imagine playing SF2 with the 3-button controller. The 6-button was great, but the 3?
@BostonPimpDaddy: Yes. Emulators rock.

Nobody makes a genesis product for gensis fanboys. It sucks.
And btw SNES never matched the Genesis in quality of games, and lost that generation of the console wars. If you bought an SNES, you got owned. Deal with it.

As far as this product goes; Meh, this is what the PSP is for.
